- Episode 120: Telegraph Creek - Along the grand canyon of The Stikine, this little town will transport you back in time. Most of the original buildings still stand, but getting to Telegraph Creek is not for the feint of heart.
I lived in Telegraph Creek in the 1990's and was the Anglican Minister there. What a road! and the River current runs between 17 and 20 miles an hour.
Thanks for preserving these - what a wonderful resource.
Spent 11 months in the area in 1988, phenomenal 👍
Came up from SE USA for two expeditions in late 80s - canoeing Stikine River and backpacking Edziza, became good friends with Francis and Anne Gleason, Talhtan family who treated us one of their own and stayed with them in telegraph Creek. I have a great video of our trip with them in it. Flew with Ron Jansen into Arctic lake, and soon after he was killed in fog trying to get to Wrangell. He told told us once: "I've never been lost but I've been in some mighty circles of uncertainty". RIP
I can and have watched these two for hours and hours. Be great to bring it back.
We hunted mountain goats out of Telegraph Creek in '87. The Riversong was still going then - had a hat from it for years.
Back then the roads were memorable for sure.
Great video from roughly that time likely - thanks.
Just finished reading "Notes from the Century before" from Edward Hoagland which contains lots of anecdotes and people stories from Telegraph Creek collected during the summer of 1966. This video is a remarkable addition :)
Drove in three winters in a row to fix the water system in the early 80’s. Used to stay upstairs in the Hudson’s bay trading post. The Grand Canyon of the Stikine is a must see.
Just put it on the list to visit this August.
thank you for posting
We stayed in the RiverSong years ago! The road in was awful for my poor husband(I loved it!). Went up river on a boat tour to the 'grand canyon', still wearing the gorgeous fleece coat I bought. The food was great. I’d love to go back!!
Ive driven this road several times, even in the winter
Not right up to T. Creek, but my Prince Rupert-based family drove often by its turnoff near Hazelton. "The Skeena: River of Destiny" by R.G.Large has good area history. There's a Telegraph Point along the Skeena between Rupert and Terrace.
lives in tc , maintains the road, summer, winter...still 300 people, still same....
'Faint' not 'feint'. Different actions.
Anyone happen to know the name of this BC historian? Would love to look into more of his works.
Bill Barlee. He has numerous books that are still in print.
