I’ve made a few of these ‘Instagram VS Reality’ videos now, because as an internet human (I refuse to call myself an influencer anymore, it just feels gross), I see first hand what goes on behind the scenes, and I hate that people compare themselves negatively to what they see online and feel crap about themselves because of it. I hope these videos will help you see that YOU are gorgeous as you are! And that none of the ‘influencers’ or instagram models are actually as ‘perfect’ as they make out online. NO ONE can live up to that level of unattainable perfection, because it doesn't exist! It’s fake! Influencers don't look like influencers in real life, so how could you possibly live up to that? Don’t compare your beautiful self to what you see online. It’s not real.
    I love you! x

I mean Ariana isn’t perfect. She has access to the best personal trainers, nutritionists, makeup artists and stylists that put her in clothes that make her body look the best. Not to mention cosmetic procedures to have a more symmetrical face or to achieve a beauty standard. Which she has had done as well. And that goes for all/most celebrities! We shouldn’t idolize anyone either. Give credit where it’s deserved, be a fan of someone’s work, and admire them. But don’t idolize when at the end of the day they’re just a human like the rest of us.

I’ve had celebs be role models to me. Not in the way they look but just in the way they act and how confident they are and how they talk about mental health. I think wanting someone’s looks is not good because of the fact that they have access to things we don’t but as for the way they act, I think that’s ok. For example, Ashley graham has helped me be more confident in my body and sophia bush, aside from acting, has become an activist which is really inspiring.

I understand that influencers must feel really insecure to edit their photos so much however I find it hard to be too sympathetic because the whole reason they want us to idolise them and think they are perfect is because it grows their follower count so they can make money from sponsorships and selling us stuff. Like its one thing to lie about your appearance if you are a random non-influencer on Instagram, but when you're selling your followers products like skinny tea, makeup, teeth whitening, clothes etc people are buying them because they want to look like the influencer. Posting facetuned images makes the audience feel bad about themselves and feel not good enough, they want to look like the facetuned influencer so they buy the products and the cycle continues. It is really unethical in my opinion. Sure, you could feel bad for these influencers for having low self esteem but think of the millions of dollars they are making from making young girls feel insecure.

He has now a few dozen thousands of followers in our home country and while yes he is super fit, and well dressed and all what he shows on his Insta he definitely is not JUST THAT. He won't show the times when he sits with a worn t-shirt and shorts on, flip-flops reading sports newspaper or playing with the cats. Ok so, I think there is a loophole here, first media create impossible beauty, then some women that are slightly ahead of the rest in terms of resources follow those standards doing whatever they can to fit in, then we feel sorry for them to put so much money and effort into following that, when in reality they are getting more money by promoting insecurities on women, because we will buy anything to look like them. But, I don't feel sorry for them, they are getting a lot of money by doing that, I'm kind of annoyed to be honest.

What I find interesting is that when I was dating guys that didn’t treat me well, I’d take about ten selfies with different tops and darkening my makeup as I went, to make it look like different days, and I’d edit them, just so when they wanted a photo of me, I could send them a photo where I looked great. I’d feel good about it as I sent it. And even then, they usually didn’t compliment me. Then I’d feel gross.
Now the guy I’m with, I don’t feel like I have to wear ANY makeup around him. I’ve never edited a photo I’ve sent him. I just don’t feel the need to. And he thinks I’m gorgeous. He likens me to an elven princess, lol. I was really sick and had to cancel on him a few days ago (briefly it looked like I might need to go to the hospital) and I was too weak to even put my hair up in a ponytail. When I started to perk up a bit, felt half human again, I sent him a photo. I was exhausted, in a ton of pain, sick, and of course had zero makeup on, and even then he was complimentary.
I think I didn’t realize it until this guy, but like... it hurt when I felt I didn’t get approval from guys I dated in the past. But what I was really looking for is the validation my guy gives me, regardless of how I *look* in my photos. When I had a problem that changed how I looked because of a health condition, he said something similar to, “You’re more than your skin to me.” And the way he said it, of course; I was being silly, to think that some superficial change would be a big important deal.
I don’t really post on social media. I don’t like leaving out all the bad stuff that happens because of my health, because it feels fake. But if I post it, it feels like I’m looking for sympathy. And the only people who really matter are going to know without me posting. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Don’t go where you’re tolerated, go where you’re celebrated. I found that, and I intend to celebrate him every day for the rest of my life.

You are so lucky you finally found that because trust me that's what everyone is looking for..they want someone to see them.. like really see them.. most people who got on social media felt insecure in their real lives and they found a way.. toxic way.. to escape and be seen and celebrated and it's temporary..I'm sure most influencers are insecure of going out into the real world coz they Don't have all their filters to hide behind..no matter how beautiful they may be.. they for sure have social anxiety

    • @AmaraJordanMusic
      @AmaraJordanMusic Před 3 lety +5

Tabby Omwenga Thanks, Tabby; I’m finding myself thanking my lucky stars every day. He really is amazing. I’ve been sick this week and he’s just being an absolute prince. I was finally able to see him (due to red zone limitations) and he’s done whatever he can to be supportive and help me feel better, getting groceries, staying up, making my food. I’ve not once felt like I needed to have on makeup. 😅 Despite feeling like an utter swamp monster, and probably looking it. 😂
You know, you make a really good point; if you get used to the filters and being able to micromanage what people see, down to the smallest details, it MUST be unnerving to go out into the real world and have people just see you, where there’s only so much you can do to ‘influence’ their perception. That kind of standard isn’t just bad for their fan bases, but for them themselves! Damaging. It’s really empathetic of you to think of it that way.

OMG Stephanie, you're so right. I lived with a very popular Social media influencer for about a year and got to know her very well. She spent HOURS editing her photos to the point where it no longer looked like her. It was such a conundrum to me because she's already extremely beautiful. But she felt like she needed a much skinnier version of her. She would ask me to take photos of her and I would take hundreds and none were ever good enough. She was a very sad person and suffered from depression. She would wait for the comments and if she got lots of praise and followers she would get excited for a bit. Every time she would meet people (or go on dates) she would tell me that they were mad because she didn't look like the photos on IG. I had so many talks with her about turning her IG into inspiring other women and doing a channel like yours (to be honest with her audience and tell them this IG life is not real) she agreed and wanted to do it sooo bad, but didn't have the courage. so sad. We still talk and it's still the same. She's still very unhappy, with thousands of followers who praise her, but they have no clue that no amount of praise is good enough and she's actually a very sad and depressed person inside.

I think this video has a lot of good points. While listening I still found myself thinking “influencers are choosing to inaccurately portray their lives and appearance, even if they aren’t happy doing it they are compliant in a messed up system...”. I agree that social media is toxic for influencers and people who participate in general but I think it’s important to recognize the choice that people have in their curation of their online persona. It may be optimistic but I think we are all tired of seeing highly edited content and if we all just collectively stopped it wouldn’t be such a big deal to look and be normal. These videos you make are so helpful. I used to think there was something wrong with the way I did my makeup for years because I never realised lighting and editing were being used by CZcamsrs and Instagram models. I was always down on myself for not being able to achieve that flawless skin they seemed to so effortlessly obtain in one video. And this video really makes you really empathise and see it from their perspective and the real dangerous expectations of beauty these days. Thankyou Stephanie x

I really struggle a lot with my looks, thank you for all of your videos. More people need to watch these.
Looking at celebrities constantly looking "perfect" plastered everywhere becomes very toxic.
I have been struggling off and on for a long time with problems with food.
I hope oneday I can feel completely comfortable and happy in my skin.
And to everyone else out there you are beautiful just the way you are. I hope all the other people struggling with their looks etc can become happy and comfortable in their skin too. ❤

This is the 1st time I've seen a video like this discussing this topic so thoroughly! I think you did a fantastic job and you really brought in a lot of different perspectives for people to look at and analyse! Thank you for the video! While I may not have needed the perspective in information now but my teenage self would really have appreciated this information back then! I am just grateful that you did this because there a lot of girls that need to see this and understand that there absolutely beautiful perfect the way that they are! There is no need to feel less than because they don't have the look or finances of someone else! Because what they have in their life may be more than what those people have or ever will have!

Most Instagram influencers are narcissistic as hell. They love having so many admirers. They need that validation like we need air to breathe. They will NEVER admit that they got any work done no matter how obvious it is.
All they’re doing is posting half naked pictures for their millions of followers, not really contributing anything at all.
It’s like a drug for them. They know the harm they’re doing but they’d rather keep up this perfect illusion of themselves.

These videos are the best! Honesty at its finest! I 10000% agree that it’s such an unhealthy situation!!! I try to follow more people on Instagram that favour showing their flaws and struggles and real ness! Not only does it make me feel a bit more human but it makes me think there ARE more people wising up and realising we can’t continue this facade. If we did everyone would look the same by 2025, and that’s SUPER BORING! Well done Stephanie !

if it’s bothering you, don’t sit around and ignore it! get rid of that fat! in the end it will make you a lot happier, wouldn’t you agree? don’t keep it if it makes you insecure, and you would feel better about yourself without it. there’s nothing wrong with working out and getting that body that you want!

Ah, this video was amazing! ❤️
I agree with you 100%. Also I might add that in my opinion the biggest problem is that the mass of people enjoy, subscribe and give attansion to the unobtainable. Because of that, fakness is actually encouraged.

I am super up-front about my flaws and embrace them on social media. It's freeing to allow yourself to be vulnerable. And hearing from people that I've encouraged to do the same?? It's amazing! I absolutely suggest people be their authentic self, for peace of mind.
