    I mentioned this in the video, but I think it's worth doubling up on because I see so many people overlooking the freedom and flexibility he is getting out of this deal. Even if PFL goes under before Francis can get an MMA fight, he still has the freedom to go where ever he choses afterward. For a guy like Francis, that is probably worth more than whatever the UFC was offering, if it meant being beholden to the UFC and their whims.

      The dick riding is so anti UFC it’s just a meme at this point. Arguing that Francis having freedom and flexibility is more valuable than the fortune he’d make in the UFC is laughable. The equity argument is equally ridiculous, athletes create equity for themselves, and the nonexistent PFL Africa is technically worthless. Maybe you’re saying the freedom to box is what’s most valuable, but no big names are interested. Francis doesn’t seem willing to fight anyone below top level boxers who have nothing to gain from him and because Francis can’t promote a fight to save his life the ppv will likely underperform. Francis is an extremely likable guy with amazing potential and character, but to enable plainly bad business decisions hurt him (the fighter) and us as fans.

I feel like doing his endeavors carefully and achieving even a marginal amount of what he aimed for cements his legacy as a fighter and as a cultural figure. For him to succeed, AND not fumble the bag, he has to do it all again to a certain degree somewhere else, which he hasn't done yet. If PFL folds and he never has a fight under that promotion is that a success? If he never fights again, or does but gets beat easily is that a success too? Is simply leaving now considered a measure of success? And if so, is that adding to the delusional MMA fan thinking you talked about in the video? Look, people quit their jobs all the time. He released his pay information for his first two UFC fights last week and it was six figures plus for each. Everyone out here acting like he’s been enslaved and telling the master no. He’s not. The UFC has made millionaires out of plenty of fighters and I’d say most of them seem okay with the deal they’ve got. He’s going to a d-league organization with no roster that will not be able to afford one unless Francis has the drawing power of Jon Jones. He doesn’t. It’s likely going to be a sideshow and Francis will fade away. PFL is like the XFL or the ABA. It could be a ploy by PFL ownership to try and get the UFC to buy their promotion.

    Beige, In regards to Dana's comment to the PFL burning cash, while that's been the case of many promotions like Affliction and EliteXC, let's not forget that was the case for the UFC as well. They were losing a boatload of money pre-Zuffa, the Fertitta didn't make a profit in the first years following the acquisition of the UFC. While they became a big success, it could've gone the same way as those above mentioned promotions too. I was always rooting for Francis, and was happy when he stuck to his guns with the UFC, honestly I was sad that the UFC could not come to terms, but I am sure they just did not want to set a precedent because you know if they gave into Francis with big things well we have Conor with two fights left on his contract and no Champions clause to keep him so I would not be surprised if he would ask for something similar (Remember he was asking for a stake in the Co not to long ago). So the UFC played the long game with a fighter who has maybe 5 good years left of fighting and possible much less.

    • @BeigeFrequency
      @BeigeFrequency  Před rokem +5

      It has always been that way with the UFC. They do not want to set a precedent that any fighter is distinct from the UFC. Frankly, I think that is why they have such a hard time building stars, when they have plenty of them in waiting. They're unwilling to give virtually anyone a push because of what it could result in down the road. They want a homogenous UFC product, and I actually think that could end up being their downfall in the future.

    Just as it was too early to say whether he had "fumbled the bag" before, it's now far too early to say whether he has "won" or not. For all we know he could flop in boxing / and the PFL, fail to sell many PPVs, and bankrupt the PFL because of his contract. The ramifications of that might only be further concretising the UFC hegemony and make free agency less possible or appealing. I know that's speculation, but it's to say that until I know what he's doing or see some results (including less direct 'results', like how negotiating in the UFC changes or what other free agents do that one could tie to the Ngannou move), I'm still sceptical of it and the jury is still out

    I'm not sure this can honestly be considered a win. At the time when Francis was leaving the UFC he was talking about getting into boxing to fight guys like Tyson Fury or AJ or Wilder for a huge payday of tens of millions of dollars. Now, half a year later, all those talks have completely silenced with nothing at all coming to fruition and with zero prospects of change. Francis is still going to fight in MMA but in a lesser (much lesser) promotion that does not attract even a fraction of public's attention that the UFC does. He also will be fighting much lesser competition which basically nullifies all of his chances of building up some sort of long-living legacy.
    The reality is that people don't really watch PFL events and one relatively big name (like Ngannou) will hardly be enough to change that dynamic. So with every year Francis spends at PFL he will gradually lose popularity and relevance and with it - any hopes of getting into a big boxing fight against Fury\AJ\Wilder caliber of opponent.
    Thus I think that with his departure from the UFC Francis did secure himself more money in the short term but - ultimately - he lost big time: in terms of both career prospects and legacy. And subsequently potential money that he might have earned if he stayed in UFC for a longer time and built up a bigger name there.
    P.S. I think that these days it's very popular among 'hardcore' fans and MMA media to hate on Dana White and the UFC for some of their practicies and decisions and this leads to a clouded judgement. This Ngannou situation looks like a very good example of that.
