- Aren't we all edgelords at some point in our lives? Maybe some of us are still in our edgy phase. There are only a handful of anime more controversial than Elfen Lied. We're talking a top-tier edgy anime. The most edgy anime there is, dare I say. But is being edgy a good thing? That's up to you I guess. If you like dark stuff with gore and nudity than look no further. Elfen Lied has everything you could want. Shame it's a pretty terrible anime. Is the manga it's based on better? Probably not. This is probably the Redo of Healer of the 2000s. Stole the title from Scamboli Reviews because I'm shameless.

Immediately detested anyone calling the nudity "hentai". The anime has shit quality, over all terrible reactions of characters to certain situations. However, there is just something about elfen lied that makes me think of it from time to time. I see a story, a unique one. A whole another point of view from a character. Made me more interested than many other anime works, I don't need to see the baziollionth character who endured a lot of pain and we see as they grows trying to achieve whatever their heart longs for. My conclusion is, elfen lied is a story delivered horribly, a one that really had potential too. If only they did a remake. I would kill for one, because I really do see something in it.
The amount of nudity in this anime shows how much animes got sanitized since early 2000s
Oh man. Oh man Oh man. Elfen Lied. Fuck man this hits me right into the nostalgia. I remember seeing an old AMV with a clip of Elfen Lied. It's really not bad. Just edgy. But it had some compelling story telling and meme material. I think I saw this when I was 15 or 16. It's probably when I got my wicked sense of humor. Here's hoping CZcams doesn't demonitize the fuck out of you. Holy shit I remember they scene where they killed the dog. Elfen lied basically did the John Wick scene before John Wick. This show is fucking Metal.
These types of animes are my secret guilty pleasures, elfen lied, blood C, higurashi, corpse party etc etc, they're SO unnecessarily edgy and i still eat it up 😭😭 (that's what makes them so good tho)
Diclonius and more specifically Lucy are children, so obviously if they get bullied by basically everyone they meet, they’re going to assume that ALL people are bad, even the ones who didn’t bully them, as they would assume that they would if they met them anyways (and knowing this anime, that probably would be the case) besides Lucy is so young she probably doesn’t even fully understand death.

This is the type of show where the author acts like humanity is irredeemable by giving characters the most abhorrent, psychotic traits possible and acting like its normal for people to bahave that way.
Tbf I wouldn't bother keeping track of the population in a town containing unstoppable demon girls that can rip anyone apart at a moments notice either.

So I think we can easily define edge as a lack of awareness and an effort to make dark themes 'cool'. Shadow the Hedgehog is edgy because he's the violent, dark reflection of an otherwise cheery character. ElfenLied is edgy because it thinks gore, nudity, and suffering is a 'cool' way to explore it's themes. Edge is (no pun intended) a double edged sword. Edge can make aspects of media immediately memorable or endearing, if done with a level of sincerity/awareness. On the other hand edge can easily fall into the trope of moody angst that hides its message behind layers of blood and swearing. Edge can be enjoyable, I recently finished reading Tokyo Ghoul and there is definitely a level of edge but i also found it funny, endearing, provocative, and sad. It walks a really fine line with its violence, making death impactful but no less plentiful. Similarly i just finished the first part of Dead Mount Death Play, an utterly stupid anime that tries way too hard to be cool with moody and fanservice characters. I love it. It is so self aware that it rounds back into be fun. ElfenLied is just misery and doesn't know how to use levity to make it's violence impactful.
