In this video, we’ll go through the journey and evolution of music videos as I think it’s important to frame that in this conversation. Sit tight though, the video WILL discuss why music video consumption is down!! 🫶🏽 thanks for watching everyone
NOBODY LIVE in concert can bring it like Tay Tay. Any argument is based on musical ignorance. TAYLOR SWIFT is a very talented musical superstar who is also very very loved by a whole lot of people ❤️ ♥️ 💜
We don't talk enough about how impactful Lady Gaga's rise was to pop music and culture. She shifted everything. She brought a level of artistry, camp and just pure showmanship to pop music that had been missing for a very long time. 2008/9 was a turning point and it was because of Lady Gaga. Music videos became fun and exciting again, the visual element of the pop star was fun and exciting again; the fashion, the live performances, all of it. Everyone had to step their game up when Gaga came out
Lady gaga had it ALL. Really a trailblazer , and i agree I don’t think people talk about that much. She was presenting fresh ideas , thought ful eye catching videos. She’s a true gem
I will never forgive what the world had done to that version of Gaga, the media mocked her so much that she became normal and toned herself down. They did the same thing to Nicki Minaj during her roman reloaded era!!
@@ia3056 This! They called her weird and over the top when really they just didn't understand her art at the time. I think she really was just misunderstood. Now everyone is nostalgic for the "old Gaga". I think we also forget that Lady Gaga was just about 22 at the start of her career, to do what she did at that age proves she's a once in a generation talent.
@@ia3056 ty for mentioning Nicki too bc i was thinking about that too. she was so much fun and different and no one was doing it like her in terms of rap at the time and she kind of reminded me of the kind of camp that Missy Elliott brought to stuff. and then yeah she watered herself down to become the queen of rap and now she is mostly indistinguishable from a lot of people. i know the industry and the media and the public can be so fucking cruel at times but damn they need to let artists be ARTISTS.
@@mgueye2mgueye261 nah I genuinley can't think of one rihrih music video tbf. They're not memorable. She's a good singer tho and I am a fan, but visually she's not a genius. I can just about remember umbrella Edit: I just typed in "rihanna music" on youtube and all the thumbnails have the exact same concept. Her looking into the camera with hair and the same makeup and wearing the same big old 00s earrings. Rihrih is a personality singer not a visual girl or a performer yanoe? Different niche.
The reason why Janet Jackson is underrated is because of the 2004 Superbowl Halftime Show "wardrobe malfunction" scandal. That incident definitely affected her career because all of her music was banned from MTV and radio stations, the albums that she released after that underperformed on the charts, not to mention that her name was removed from the list of performers at the 2004 Grammy Awards (which were held a week after the Superbowl Halftime Show). This backlash as well as the horrible treatment to Britney Spears in the 2000s due to the constant harassment of the press and the tabloids are two of the biggest injustice acts towards women in the entertainment industry.
Sorry to say but MJ is in his OWN category he influenced the other 2 you listed . Plus he started in the 80s. I doubt you’re an 80s kid so if you say you “grew yo watching MJ” it definitely wasn’t from his debut. Not that it matters
@@lessismore8533 yeah it really doesn’t matter, what was the point of commenting this? no one said bey or gaga were better hello?? i’m a 2000s kid i grew up watching his music videos. yall are so effing exhausting and pretentious to talk to my god.
@@withneyjoseph51 if only the music industry stayed like how it was in the 90s and 80s. From what I’ve heard, back then you had to be unique, different and stand out and have your own unique sound/style to be noticed, nowadays it’s obvious the music industry forgot about that and will hire anyone for their looks or for easily marketable commercial music instead of seeking out the actual talented artists.
@@alicejoly4268 eras tour gross revenue > GREATER than ALL,every single one of MJS TOURS COMBINED. Adjusted for inflation. Mike is a little girl compared to big girl Tay Tay.
You’re right -These labels did what tv networks did. They stopped hiring creative people and hired businessmen. They don’t care about creating art and trying something new. We also might be mentally exhausted of seeing and hearing the same music and nostalgia formula.
The last hit video we had recently is probably flowers, the video debuted with 13.8M views in its first 24 hours and reached 100M after its first 11 days, it currently sits at 682M as of right now
I think it’s very important to note how influential alternative Rock music videos were to even some of the big pop stars during the 80s and 90s especially if we’re talking about Kate Bush, Bjork, and Radiohead they drove the idea of music videos being narrative without huge choreography but instead crazy visuals age wonderful concepts
Honesty, ever since I've gotten into K-pop, I haven't been able to look at Western music videos the same way. It made them look like they put little effort into them. Blackpink, in particular, has always hit the spot for me when it comes to music videos. They go above and beyond for them, and they barely use any greenscreen or CGI. You'll get met with scenes that make you think it does, but only to find out behind the scenes they actually built the sets and went through with the effects. Their song, Playing with Fire, is a good example of this, their sets are built, and in one particular scene; a member is standing on a balcony and the railing sets on fire. For obvious reason you would assume they would use CGI (they do in one scene), but behind the scenes they actually do set it on fire. Despite how unsafe they can be, it does show the effort behind them.
Wow, yessss i’ve been hearing a lot of Kpop fans talk about how much they love the mv. When i go to boba shops and Korean restaurants where I live, they play only kpop videos and eyes are GLUEDDD to the tv. Partially because i haven’t seen many but because they’re entertaining. Really cool visuals happening
i feel like it’s important to note that without groups like destiny’s child, tlc and other black girl groups from the 2000s and 90s that kpop music videos wouldn’t be the way they were at all in terms of style and presentation.
K pop music videos are still pretty uncreative, just because it's high value doesn't mean it's good. Most of them are just the band dancing in front of a background with random effects thrown in, it's not creative or interesting.
Kpop still utilizes lots of green screen and cgi, even the most popular groups, ie new jeans, itzy, I’ve, nct, etc. Black pink and yg artists are one of a kind in kpop in that aspect
@@CamrynSuzannevery good video tho, the decline in music video views is something I've noticed myself over the years. I primarily listen to music through youtube and I love watching music videos
Rihanna is another artist that had such interesting music videos! she was beating the illumanti allegations with the umbrella video, her disturbia video was scary, we found love video had tumblr in a chokehold! and b*tch better have my money was like a movie
Lady Gaga truly embodied what you were talking about here, the FULL PACKAGE, ugh sometimes this girl gets done so dirty by the industry but she revolutionized pop culture so hard I think it is one of the reasons why some stuff right now is so meh
She really did! I talked about her in a bit more depth in my pop is dead video. She really is the full package. Iconic visuals, the fashion, everything.
To be FAIR Gaga want original . Eccentric was POPULAR in the 80s with Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Boy George etc. There was nothing wrong with Gaga bringing back BUT I hated how everyone treated her like she invented it back then. Her image was heavily overrated
@@lessismore8533 Everything old can be made new again, you’d ant just say Madonna invented her own style, she drew some influence from Christianity, taboo, etc… and she made it her own, just like how Gaga borrowed the ancient pop star concept and made it herself, both pioneers and CREATORS
I’m honestly surprised mv’s haven’t gotten much shorter and geared more towards TikTok. But I feel like people aren’t as interested because artists just aren’t pushing the boundaries anymore (musically or visually). It’s so safe and predictable now with the same tired messages and themes over and over. Idk in recent years it just seems like the industry overall has a lack of passion for the art of music. Making things solely to go viral, what’s trendy, and for a paycheck.
Me too! I honestly think that’s next. Or maybe artists are trying to make more “relatable “ less flashy content to promote their music through apps like tik tok. Yeah i agree, i think music is a check for a lot of artists. The passion is lost
Music in an industry. If the music goes to shit so do the music videos. If these people cant imagine new music how can they imagine a new visual concept. Even arianas new music video is a copy of Paula abduls music video. I think music videos shouldn't appeal to tiktok. They should be world immersing and like short musical films. That way ppl get more of a show. They can chop it up and edit it for promo purposes on tiktok later.
Yeah, it’s so strange that artists today aren’t pushing the boundaries of music and aren’t taking risks, what happened? What happened to musical legends nowadays? We have all these resources in the world and yet here we are.
Michael Jackson & Katy Perry were a few people who made incredible music videos. Gwen Stefani's "cool" was also so beautiful. Excellent points. I'm so glad you highlighted this. Labels should take risks like they used to and artists who have the funds should step it up and invest in making good music videos again that aren't just them flaunting their beauty lol, something with an interesting storyline and that conveys the emotions of the song. I feel like a quality music video makes people listen more.
Yes! Ik a lot of professional commercial dancers and their are still some auditions but a lot of it is not based on being seen on social media / who you know. I don’t think its as common as it used to be
@victoriarooks784 Dated underage girls. Search up Sable Star and Lori Maddox. Bowie tried to get both an underage Michael Jackson and his little brother (I believe it's Marlon) to do dr*gs with him back in the 70s according to the Janet Jackson documentary.
Kpop music videos are crazy good . They put millions into the music videos they travel countries to shoot a video every kpop mv has its own lore and story( example Ateez , aespa) They have whole writers for the mvs. The visuals the colors are so bright . There isn't one single unintresting kpop music video
As I read the title, I immediately ran to the comments. I was thinking about Ari before her mv dropped and hoped her mv wouldn't be like Doja's "Attention" but that's exactly what happened. I remember Break up with your girlfriend im bored, god is a woman, thank u, next, breathin, 7 rings, no tears lefto cry, positions. In my genuine opinion, her mvs her always spectacular. I guess making cheeper mvs is an easy way out of expnses for artists this way - which makes me sad bcz i adored that era -.
@@CamrynSuzanneit was new for her though. i like that each era we get something different for HER. she’s never claimed to be a pioneer but has used inspiration and made it genuinely fit her well
I mean what exactly is the point of huge budgets if not many people are even interested in CZcams music videos anymore? It’s a waste of money considering they aren’t getting much money out of it
@@Bunny20241 exactly, CZcams videos are very low these days. I am shocked so many popular songs don’t got more than 100-200 m views, that wasnt the case back in the day
I was surprised when you said 10k sub goals. I legit thought you were at least at 200k. Your videos are so high quality and I hope more people get to see it
All Nite (Don’t Stop) by Janet Jackson deserved better😭😭😭😭😭 The unfair blacklisting really ruined what would’ve been a MOMENT for dancers and Dirty Pop
I agree Normani’s Wild Side is the best music video of the decade. The choreography 🔥, the outfits, the stunts (her sliding on the floor), the creativity (her pulling her reflection out of the mirror to dance with herself). It’s just perfection. It’s a moment. And it adds so much to the song like you mentioned! That video ser the bar so high for me for music videos. It still has not been surpassed. In my opinion. (In terms of recent music videos)
I just watched it and honestly it didn't live up the hype for me. Technically amazing but didn't feel very meaningful, I'd say I've seen better mvs in just last year (2023)
@@okaiiiii3931 I'm not a big choreo person myself, I tend to value the meaning or purpose of a music video more than the visuals. In terms of artists in the past year who have been doing really well with choreo and visuals, I agree that Victoria Monet has been serving with choreography. So has Tyla, I've seen. Tate McRae's recent videos have been great, specifically exes, the choreo and camera shots are so addictive and it pays tribute to Britney and Xtina in a cool way. Troye Sivans music videos aren't VERY choreo focused but I find the visuals are really well done too. I could probably think of more this is just off the top of my head.
I'd like to add Troye Sivan into the mix of current artists who take their music video craft seriously. The music videos for his most recent album have been impressive, and one of them deservedly got a Grammy nomination.
@@CamrynSuzanne Rush got the Grammy nom. I think Got Me Started is also excellent, while One of Your Girls got a lot of attention due to Troye doing drag and Ross Lynch being in it too.
after decades of the music industry existing, it is extremely difficult for these artists to come out with something original, or pay homage while adding their own twists to it and keep people engaged. like there’s really nothing left to do anymore. and if they do, the general public will always say “the og will always be better” they won’t even give it a chance. the last few iconic superstars we truly had were the 2010s main girls: taylor, rihanna, beyonce, ariana, gaga, adele, katy and nicki. after these it’s kinda fallen, and so has their creativity. their music videos used to have BUDGETS. CONCEPTS, VISUALS. but after doing this for so long ones ideas can run so dry. i don’t blame them for their lack of creativity honestly, it is extremely difficult to be innovative now. and trying to add shock value is over too, look as lil nas x’s recent video… he thought he’d have people engaged by adding religious aspects but instead it did even worse. there’s nothing to see anymore, music videos aren’t interesting, people just wanna have pretty visuals or just do whatever… like ariana’s music video to yes and was pretty good, but as u said, it’s been done before. it was NOTHING like some of her best like God is a woman, no tears left to cry, break free, thank u next. you could feel the budget and see the concepts in those. and i believe the rise of streaming also has something to do with killing youtube, just like it did with killing pure sales. ik for me personally, during youtube’s golden era i was still in elementary/middle school so my only source of listening to music was by youtube, so id have to play the music videos. and this is the case for a lot of latin countries or third world countries who don’t have the luxuries to pay for spotify or apple music, they use youtube, which is why a lot of hispanic artists are still thriving on youtube, karol g’s doing amazing on there and one of her videos that’s less than a year old is about to hit 1 BILLION, that’s unheard of nowadays…. hispanic artists are doing pretty well on youtube as they always have. there’s truly a lot that goes into the death of youtube and music videos, but i really hope something happens because i believe that music videos are an important aspect of what it means to be an iconic super star, those videos showcase what they’re made of, and shows their creativity. something that these new artists and even older artists are lacking.
I'm glad you spoke about it because i MISS SO MUCH REAL VIDEO SETS. A music video like Paparazzi or Where Have You Been wouldn't be the same with CGI. Please let's bring real sets back!
A current artist who I do see putting effort with their lyrics and music videos is Sabrina Carpenter. Especially as of recents with her last album “emails i can’t send” she’s slowly been becoming more known but it’s a shame her music videos didn’t get traction when they released. She’s slowly climbing up and I just hope more music lovers give her a chance
Yep! I really like Sabrina. I talk about her in more depth in my pop is dead video. I think she’s putting in effort with her visuals and I think she’s super talented
@@CamrynSuzanne Yes I did watch that one too! With the other artists you mentioned in that video I feel like the industry may soon be forced to start getting creative again. At least one can only hope
i see madison beer putting a lot of effort into her music videos as well, i know that her record label doesn’t invest into her mvs so she works on a budget and still manages to make great music videos.
You know it's bad when Taylor Swift won with Anti Hero against Melanie Martinez for best music video. No wonder even artists with big budgets like Ariana and Doja are going for less budget mvs.
as someone raised on MJ videos I lost interest in music videos around the time Gaga, Katy, and Nicki all started doing more toned down stuff 2016-ish never even seen a Billie music video

one of the things i wish you had talked about was that the majority of gen z no longer sits down to consume music. most people i know primarily listen to their playlists during class or work while accomplishing a task they don't wanna do in order to find some level or entertainment or enjoyment in misirable waste of time busy work. every day, they wake up, get dressed, pop in their air pods, turn on their playlist, and listen to what is basically a backing track of their favorite songs for 6,7, 8 hours at a time until they go home and turn on CZcams or go on tik tok. and i know this because this is something i do as well. this is also how a lot of people just consume media now, usually listening to CZcams videos while multitasking on shopping, on artwork, on cleaning or writing or whatever. even in the case of real tv shows, most people watch real tv when they eat, so its still not like an isolated activity. gen x would sit down to mtv to watch the launch of the new MJ video, millennials would sit down to watch the newest taylor swift video. gen z? we listen to an entire album during US history because we don't wanna be their and need some way to find joy in a Miserabel waste of our time. essentially, anything we can listen to has sort of just become background noise so we dont have to hear the silence around us.
One of my favorite music videos of all time is Fake love by BTS because 2018 was a weird time where you have all these companies doing half green & half real sets, but that M/V was all practical real and not CGI.
I’ll have to check it out! Yeah it’s definitely something I miss. I love people actually building sets, using real items vs everything based in cgi and green screen. It makes a difference
Another clear example of the decline in quality and budget is l Melanie Martinez’s CryBaby era having a high concept high budget music video for every song on that album with hundreds of millions of views, now going into her new album with every music video being almost full green screen
@@phillinsogood i use filmora (so this May be a bit different depending on what you use) , basically you take the part of the video you want to green screen and copy & paste it on top it. So you will layer the videos. Then, I select the AI portrait feature (this may be different in a different editing software) and it cuts out the top layer. Lastly, I lay an image underneath the cut out image. It’s kinda hard to explain 😭but that’s the general concept
I think ppl are less invested in music videos than some, like you, like me even. I grew up with Britney, and I remember not being able to wait until her videos came out. Granted, I'm older now (in my 40s), but I keep up. From my view, it's streaming that's the big hurdle for these musicians. And - you nailed it, the drams ppl like to hear about, ie: Ariana Grande's messy divorce, etc. Now the thing is ppl judge her off her personal life and don't want to see the video, ya know?
Yeah, I think people care so much more about peoples personal lives versus their art. People don’t really separate the art from the artist anymore like before. And that might be a good thing when it comes to artist who legitimately not good people, but it definitely means people aren’t gonna tune in to things like he’s a videos, etc.
The bar has been set so high by past music artists with their music videos that is impossible for today's artists to stack up to it. Take Michael Jackson for example. He categorized music videos as short films, which they honestly were. Michael's visuals focused on the message of the song, addressed certain lyrics, had intros and outros, dance breaks, spoken parts, and other bits hence why alot of his short films are like 10+ minutes long. Today's artist just make music videos for their songs, not much substance to it, and then its onto the next one. There also isn't alot of music videos I would rewatch from today's artists because of that.
the internet truly shifted the art of being a popstar... someone also stated bec the industry has become a fastmusic industry, we might not get a superpopstar for a while when labels dont invest anymore
Modern artists and labels are not being aware of the potential of music videos :/ I remember that a good way to know if a song was a hit was if the video surpassed 500M views in 1 month or less. Now, I can only know by checking how many streams the song has on Spotify and sometimes, Spotify shows the song has more than 1B streams while the music video barely surpassed 500M (which is a lot, I know, but that music video would have more than 1B as of today!!). I remember Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift was a music video that I really paid close attention to its view count and I remember clearly how it just naturally went up to 1B, something that I completely expected because the song was a big hit. Now, big hits like that song rarely surpass 500M and *NONE* of them (LITERALLY NONE) reach 1B.
there is a lot of music videos that is like, a remake of something that already exist. but talking about new ideas, we have, doja cat "paint the town red" as exemple (that is known) melanie Martinez (should be more talked), and a lot of another artists that have great ideas but they are not recognized, and this is something sad
You are my new favorite pop culture/music youtuber! Loving your videos, editing is great as well. Also David Bowie was speaking facts--embarrassing for mtv that even a white male singer (not even from the US) was calling them out lol. It's so frustrating that the creators of this culture were sidelined on mtv, even with their crazy success publicly.
Ahhh thank you!! People like you keep me going❤️ yesss i wanted to add that bit in there bc david bowie was speaking complete facts despite ppl wanting to deny that history
I feel as though the world has never felt so dystopian as it does today. Picturing the future has never felt so terrifying and difficult. I wouldn’t be surprised if that has an effect on video innovation. Innovation stems from envisioning what could be. Yet in this climate “what could be”: war, disease, financial crisis are not necessarily things most people wanna consume rather escape. Hence this desire for nostalgia based content where we mourn the simpler times.
This is a great take, i think this absolutely contributes. There’s so many bad things happening it’s hard to ignore. Escapism hardly feels like an esacpe. Like you said, it ties into the heavy nostalgia content . Reminiscing on “better” times
You really missed the opportunity to highlight the fact that Lady Gaga made music videos ART again and really turned up the heat for the other pop girlies to make their music videos as avante garde and memorable - there’s a reason Bad Romance became the highest viewed video on CZcams when it came out, only surpassed by Justin Beiber’s Baby.
Camryn I love this video and I agree, also I believe that part of the problem for views on CZcams declining in general is because people use TikTok a lot. Its a shared viewership, CZcams shares it's old viewer with TikTok and Reels now. TikTok makes it easier to consume information in a shorter amount of time and that's most likely why CZcams Shorts and Reels was created. They are battling for our attention and our time.
This is a great video. I love music videos too but I am discouraged from watching them when they aren’t attached to a good song. Also many don’t have replay value. I watch them once, think it’s boring then never watch again. Once I see this it makes me less likely to give the artist another chance to disappoint.
I stopped watching music videos so long ago, bc they were boring. But then I discovered k-pop (bts specifically 💜) and haven’t stopped since, they fill the void
I feel like it’s also worth mentioning that Madonna occupies three out of the top four most expensive music videos ever made. she delivers budget that most artists are too scared to invest! Michael of course is still revolutionary with combining film with music, but Thriller wasn’t the most expensive video of the time, it was David Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes. I still love your videos though!! I just wanted to add some information that I felt like was needed
i’d say Melanie Martinez is extremely underrated and her creative power with her music videos is insane. she made an entire MOVIE that was released to theaters for her album in 2019. the Crybaby album tells a story across all of its music videos, which continued through K-12 and now in PORTALS. she spends so much time working on her music videos and the visuals are stunning. it’s so impressive and the storytelling is beautiful. extremely underrated and very talented artist.
When the most familiar format of music videos were first produced in the late 70s, often used as promotional material sent to record companies before becoming the mass popular and cultural phenomenon they became with MTV, music videos were unique in that they were the only short-form video entertainment being produced. Now, that carried on right through to the advent of CZcams and TikTok. Now, however, this sort of short-form video is being used for all sorts of entertainment purposes, and being used to great effect by their creators to capture the eyes of the viewing public. I think music videos might be suffering a fall-off in viewership for the simple fact that people have more to watch, more selection, more variety, when it comes to their 3, 4, and 5-minute video fix.
Thank you for adding this, i did a lot of research regarding promotional videos! A lot of them weren’t considered “music videos” in the modern sense. Yesss there is so much more to watch absolutely.
In this day and age everything feels like less special, I remember being super excited for music videos in the 2000s and early 2010s now they all look kind of cheap. Also MV views come from the young. And the younger people are way to busy watching 30 second videos on TikTok
21:45 I usually don’t like the fact that labels are so hesitant towards money lending but they also have a point doing so. I remember an interview from JLo where she admitted that after her long break from music she self-financed her music video for the song „On The Floor“ 100%, so this seems to happen a few times. Of course JLo has already been a multi-millionaire by that time and comparing her to Normani is like comparing apples with bananas. Had JLo’s music video not skyrocketed she wouldn’t care a lot, I guess.
Yeah, I understand that as well because the music industry ultimately is a business. If they feel like they’re not going to recoup something, they may not invest. Overall though, I think it hurts the art last time goes on
@@theiceyhawttstunna6631 I think the label either didn’t want to lend as much as she needed for her vision or they had doubts about her succeeding with that song because she focused more on film and acting the years prior. „On the floor“ was one of her come-back singles, which was very strong and big at the time. Still love that song, too.
i think doja cat, specifically this era, is bringing back a lot of game changing creativity in terms of music videos. such as agora hills, paint the town red and demons. pitchfork themselves praised her for keeping the "art of the iconic music video" alive, and called her "one of the form's few remaining practitioners. I think that’s why PTR was so HUGE because it was such a shock to a lot of people but also added to the song. I also think tyler, creator and billie have continually gave very visually appealing music videos that go along with this opinion too. You can tell there artists who actually put real thought into it. i think olivia rodrigo’s good 4 u and bad idea right? are examples interesting modern music videos with a narrative that we so much lack now as well, and i genuinely hope she continues in that direction. i love when artists have an entire aesthetic to their persona or album cycle. hers is very much Y2K teen chick flick. also megan with cobra… i love seeing such artist growth that’s definitely going down in MV history for this decade. it’s really sad to me how the medium isn’t taken as seriously anymore. when you see HUGE artists like Nicki Minaj use AI to promote her album instead of any sort of visuals it irks me.
I don’t agree with everything do it does and she makes me quite uncomfortable sometimes but you are not wrong. I think a lot of people have tuned into her visuals and her music because it’s engaging and she’s pushing boundaries. She’s one of the only people I think people tap to when it comes to the visuals along with the music.
This is my favorite video so far, great journalism Cammy🥰 I’ve sadly noticed a slow decline of personal artistry and self expression in music videos also. I’m glad you made this video and brought so many great points to light(sometimes from a dancers perspective too😍🩰)
She genuinely deserves credit for that, because the baby girl is going to give us a look. She’s going to give us a dance routine, she’s going to give us an amazing music video and I live for it.
@@CamrynSuzanne It pains me that we’ll likely never see Normani become the main pop girl she could’ve been 😭 she would’ve kept us FED with visuals and moments
I'm surprised you haven't mention Bruno Mars who song "Uptown Funk" which have 5.1 billion views, 24K Magic over 1.6 billion views, "That's What I Like" 2.2 billion, "Grenade" 1.1 billion and "Leave The Door Open" over 747 million. Give Bruno some love.
This is why I love Melanie Martinez her videos are very like story oriented k12 was literally a musical movie thing and it was exciting to see. Her new album also goes a lot into the aesthetic she has.
I just wanted to say I watch your videos every morning while I’m getting ready for work and really appreciate how much time and effort you put into them!! I’m so surprised you don’t have more subscribers
One present day artist that is constantly giving great visuals in my opinion is doja cat. I mean she is serving us looks, concept (that are original) versatility, shock value, the list goes on. You can really tell that when she does something she puts her all in it and doesn’t give us the bare minimum. It’s reminiscent of some of those music videos that artists like Katy and gaga were doing in the early 2000. I’m here for it. Thank you for making long form content for the ones that still enjoy it, that was a great video ❤
Ooo i already know this is gonna be good. I definitely music vids don’t hit the same today. There are a couple ppl doing things like tinashe, normani, rina, fka twigs but otherwise….
Yes Black Women are SLAYING! But you know, the world won’t pay attention. But when a white girl does it, they’ll say she brought it back. Kinda like they were saying that Greedy girl is bringing back choreography and real pop stars even though all Black Female Artist are/were, and will always do that.
Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, and I was discussing it with my brother 2 days ago, the music video was a promotional tool with immense reach...besides, each release of a Michael Jackson music video was an event worldwide and even in France, Thriller was broadcast on the 2nd national channel in Prime Time on a Saturday, I was only 4 years old but I still remember it. The music video was a phenomenal support for the life of a single and music videos even helped the success of the single. I'm thinking in particular of Happy by Pharrell Williams, which was released a few months before on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, but the music video made it a success . I think that the music video no longer has its place today because it can no longer be used as a promotional tool in the Tik Tok era and the reduced attention span of the audience. We realize this when we see that a title broadcast today rarely lasts more than 3 minutes and is limited to the chorus/verse/chorus format, which leaves little room for the scriptural creativity that a music video can require (intro etc…). This is the world today and I think we just have to look into the past and treat our eyes and ears to what was the golden age of music video. Excellent analysis on your part and I agree that the last good video clip released was that of Normani, which actually made me want to download the title.
I'm surprised didn't mention Music Choice. If you guys didn't know, MC were channels on cable that either had audios of music (like a radio station) or had a demand channel with music videos. Before CZcams, I had Music Choice. It was mainly between 2009-11 for me; lady gaga, rihanna, nicki minaj, drake, britney spears, katy perry, etc. of course some of it were censored because it was cable. But shout out to Music Choice for amping up my childhood!
I think I want to do a video discussing more music channels and their impact, there was quite a few music channels that I didn’t mention, but I didn’t want to make the video too long to get my point across
I would like to add- I feel like celebrity scandals and drama tend to get in the way of people enjoying the art singers put out. For example, with Ariana Grande, people are tuning out and refusing to support her career because of her recent relationship behavior and drama.
Yess ! Alot of ppl are not receptive to her single & video bc of her scandal coinciding with the message of her song.its put a bad taste in ppls mouths
Well yeah. People have a right to expect basic morality from their public figures lol. The only reason celebs are a thing is because their fans relate to them or admire them. When you have scandals your break the immersion of idolisation and that is the brand of celebs. Your break your brand, you alienate your fans. It'd a simple science. If it's a case of the art vs the artist then the artist shouldn't put their image out there to be scrutinised of they want to keep their brand safe. They want to have it both ways. Behave terribly and then expect fans to still adore and love them. If they wanted to keep their privacy then they need to be anonymous. But let's face it, celebs want and like attention so they can't have it both ways. It's part of the package. Music isn't just music, it's feeling, emotions and visuals too. Its an entire industry. Business wise and psychologically.
@@dw9524 Yes I agree with you! I was bringing up the point to add on :) I actually haven’t streamed Ariana’s new song… her scandals really made me distance myself from her as an artist.

Some of my favorite music videos have been Psycho and Body Better by Maisie Peters!!!! Psycho is about a girl who finds out her boyfriend is cheating and connects with all of his exes and they all take turns doing small things for revenge. There is a whole lot more than that, but I want to encourage you to check out the video. Body Better by Maisie Peters is also a great music video, as the visuals are fantastic and match the feral feminine energy of the song.

Love your research. I totally agree with everything you said. I would have to say US music videos peaked in the mid teens (Probably around 2015/ 2016). It just seems like videos the last few years are lackluster and low-budget.
I haven't read any comment on it but I think it also has a lot to do with accesibility to music! Of course during the 90s purchasing physical media was expensive and during the 2010s streaming platforms (i.e. apple music / spotify, etc) were not that popular yet! so music videos were both an entertaining but most important accesible way to consume music since if it was on tv or youtube, you did not have to purchase the song or the album, people will always gravitate towards the cheapest way to consume

Her debut was literally insane like idk if anything compares 😮💨😮💨
I will never forgive what the world had done to that version of Gaga, the media mocked her so much that she became normal and toned herself down. They did the same thing to Nicki Minaj during her roman reloaded era!!
@@ia3056 This! They called her weird and over the top when really they just didn't understand her art at the time. I think she really was just misunderstood. Now everyone is nostalgic for the "old Gaga".

Janet Jackson was also a major video icon and pioneer ❤
Yes, I regret not mentioning her in this video, but she deserves all of the flowers
Big facts. A music video LEGEND in her own right.
It’s kinda sad to see the decline in music videos. I grew up watching MJ, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, etc. The videos were iconic ❤
Sorry to say but MJ is in his OWN category he influenced the other 2 you listed . Plus he started in the 80s. I doubt you’re an 80s kid so if you say you “grew yo watching MJ” it definitely wasn’t from his debut. Not that it matters

@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 yea it’s actually true

Labels should take risks like they used to and artists who have the funds should step it up and invest in making good music videos again that aren't just them flaunting their beauty lol, something with an interesting storyline and that conveys the emotions of the song. after decades of the music industry existing, it is extremely difficult for these artists to come out with something original, or pay homage while adding their own twists to it and keep people engaged. like there’s really nothing left to do anymore. and if they do, the general public will always say “the og will always be better” they won’t even give it a chance. the last few iconic superstars we truly had were the 2010s main girls: taylor, rihanna, beyonce, ariana, gaga, adele, katy and nicki. after these it’s kinda fallen, and so has their creativity. their music videos used to have BUDGETS.

Why thank you! I wanted to properly represent it because it is vital in discussing music video evolution
@@CamrynSuzanne again, you nailed it! :) :)
There also isn't alot of music videos I would rewatch from today's artists because of that.
the internet truly shifted the art of being a popstar... someone also stated bec the industry has become a fastmusic industry, we might not get a superpopstar for a while when labels dont invest anymore
the day music videos stop is the day the music industry is dead
I feel like Taylor Swift is one of the few mainstream artist who still puts a lot of effort into her mv's
I also heard that after the eras tour she is going to step into direction and I am looking forward to it.
@ankitapandey3703 I said "one of the few," not the only one.
@@samriddhigupta5514what does that mean?
@@maddiebasketball7597 her next career move I guess
Yeah doja and melanie I feel are always trying to push the envelope . Doing something different or put their twist on it. I respect that a lot
i watch megan thee stallion music videos like how grandfathers stare out the window with their hands behind their back
😂😂😂
😅😂
You are my new favorite pop culture/music youtuber! Loving your videos, editing is great as well. Also David Bowie was speaking facts--embarrassing for mtv that even a white male singer (not even from the US) was calling them out lol. It's so frustrating that the creators of this culture were sidelined on mtv, even with their crazy success publicly.
Ahhh thank you!! People like you keep me going❤️ yesss i wanted to add that bit in there bc david bowie was speaking complete facts despite ppl wanting to deny that history
Facts
It was actually supposed to be Single Ladies, but unfortunately she had to delete it and repost it. 😊
I love your channel like I'm a sucker for a good pop culture analysis!! Keep it going!!
Thank you!!🥰
Tiktok killed the video star!
One of the most astute observations of music today, on CZcams or anywhere else. 🙏🏼
Wow thank you!!!
This is a great video. I love music videos too but I am discouraged from watching them when they aren’t attached to a good song. Also many don’t have replay value. I watch them once, think it’s boring then never watch again. Once I see this it makes me less likely to give the artist another chance to disappoint.
Thank you!! Yeah i don’t watch music videos as much as i used to😭 not bc of my attention span but there’s nothing really exciting happening
I stopped watching music videos so long ago, bc they were boring. But then I discovered k-pop (bts specifically 💜) and haven’t stopped since, they fill the void
Ngl. Kpop music videos are more exciting to watch.👍
You make an excellent point.
Thank you for adding this, i did a lot of research regarding promotional videos! A lot of them weren’t considered “music videos” in the modern sense. Yesss there is so much more to watch absolutely.
Britney's videos were always the best in her times
I personally love Billie's videos, even if I don't like the song initially I still look forward to the video and it elevates the song for me
In this day and age everything feels like less special, I remember being super excited for music videos in the 2000s and early 2010s now they all look kind of cheap.
Overall though, I think it hurts the art last time goes on
“On the Floor” was amazing! I am surprised to hear this because the economy was good when that song came out (2011)
@@theiceyhawttstunna6631 I think the label either didn’t want to lend as much as she needed for her vision or they had doubts about her succeeding with that song because she focused more on film and acting the years prior. „On the floor“ was one of her come-back singles, which was very strong and big at the time. Still love that song, too.
I gotta say one of things I
Like most about your channel is the comments section. Great video by the way
Awe thank you!!! Yes we always have some great conversations!
i think doja cat, specifically this era, is bringing back a lot of game changing creativity in terms of music videos. such as agora hills, paint the town red and demons. pitchfork themselves praised her for keeping the "art of the iconic music video" alive, and called her "one of the form's few remaining practitioners.
This is my favorite video so far, great journalism Cammy🥰
I’ve sadly noticed a slow decline of personal artistry and self expression in music videos also.
I’m glad you made this video and brought so many great points to light(sometimes from a dancers perspective too😍🩰)
Awe thank you Jayda🥺 yess as a dancer we definitely notice nuances that I think go unnoticed!!
I’m glad you brought up Normani, she truly was a music video star and always delivered choreo, visuals, acting and budget ❤
@@CamrynSuzanne maybe I spoke too soon, I’m really curious how she’s going to adapt to the new music video era now that she’s announced her album
Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga 🔥🔥🔥
I just wanted to say I watch your videos every morning while I’m getting ready for work and really appreciate how much time and effort you put into them!! I’m so surprised you don’t have more subscribers
Awee i lovveeee that you’re enjoying my videos!!! People like you keep me motivated
Omg yes!! Fka twigs…her visuals are the definition of a masterpiece !! All these girls you mentioned have fire visuals
@@Jessica-oy8zs yeah it's really dissapointing since so much of us grew up with her on Victorious and then her scandals happened after years of never being in a direct scandal herself.
I love your pop culture commentary! As a millennial I feel our generation was the last real era of music videos.

I think Thank U,Next was the last iconic music video of the 2010s

I agree, music videos are less original today - the throwbacks need to stop or need to have more nuance at the least
Another blockbuster video by Camryn!! She knows her stuff!!
Awee thank you!!🥺🫶🏽
music videso arent declining, youtube started only counting views that are watched when you are signed in. a lot of users arent signed in so they dont count as views. this started around sept 8th
I do think that’s a huge factor, but from also what I’m hearing from people not only in the comments but other platforms; people are overwhelmingly saying that they let creativity, and they’re simply not as interested as they were before
Meanwhile, me who still mainly watches MVs on TV and has no idea about new releases unless they're getting shown once on TV: 👁👄👁
Love your research. I totally agree with everything you said. I would have to say US music videos peaked in the mid teens (Probably around 2015/ 2016). It just seems like videos the last few years are lackluster and low-budget.
Thank you! Yeah it definitely peaked that mid 2010s era. It’s absolutely lacking
Loved this sm:I would really love if you made a video about K-pop,British,American ect girl and boy group and the rise and fall of some band and how much effort are put into their vids and if they are good enough vids for the budget or their friendship ect I WOULD STAN IF YOU MADE IT❤❤❤❤❤
