  • The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is a bike that I was very excited about when I heard about it's release. It seemed to me like a Fazer's more athletic, slimmer, hotter, more exciting, sporty younger sister and I was DESPERATE to get on one! Well the wait is over. I took one out for a blast around in the sunshine and here's what I think of it...

    Love your reviews, hearing someone enjoying their bikes and testing them properly beats the crap out of all the regular reviewers. Came across yours as I was looking at the vstrom to replace my varadero, but I think I am going to be getting a MT09

    I've just discovered your channel and subscribed after your Versus 1000 review. On this one though: Your comments about having a laugh all the time while riding a Tracer were exactly how I felt when I've tested Tracer 900 GT earlier this year. I laughed so much almost fell of the beast. Intoxicating acceleration and that sound, ahhh, and crackles and pops on the overrun - just pure comedy! I ride Tracer 700 which is comparable to your Versus 650 and the same issues, plenty of torque down low but vibration is irritating. If I can only find extra cash Tracer 900 GT in the flash.

    I only discovered your channel on CZcams yesterday. Loving your reviews, Man. I have the same problem as you when test riding bikes. Windsheild. Looks like Yamaha got it right on this one! But my fave bike to ride is the VStrom.
    Note to self: Test ride MT 09 on my next bike shop visit..

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 8 lety

      +SenseiEpu Hey! Thanks for dropping by! Being tall has always been more of a hindrance than a help when it comes to bikes! I've already had to let go of early dreams of having a Ducati Monster. Too blinkin' small! It's all such a subjective thing with bikes though isn't it? My favourite was the Yamaha but that by no means makes the V-Strom a bad bike. It's just the characteristics that I look for. I hope this came across in the review! But I would highly recommend giving the MT-09 a go. Just be ready for that AWFUL snatchy throttle!

    Thanks Andy, I have one as a Shop Loaner bike while the Beemer is in for some new parts. I have not checked any settings, but the seat is in a high position, it is thin and hard, the rear shock is preloaded some - to make it ride over bumps like a road roller, the low throttle response is shocking, the off-throttle cruising is terribly jerky, it has an Akrapovic exhaust which sounds ok in the yard but is barky under short throttle bursts but sings harshly and is very noisy at highway speeds. Granted, she is an abused machine, but this one is a dog to drive. Yeah, sure, she has some serious get up and go when passing and barks nicely from the triple, nice and light handling, easy to move around into the garage backwards. I found it very difficult getting to the side stand as you did too - a real art for a short legged 70 year old like me!! A real sporty bike though.

      +Andy Man Cam I bought mine in August 2015 and was advised that it the throttle was a little smoother. "A" mode was still a little twitchy, but standard mode was much better. Just picked up a 2015 FJ/MT09 for $5000 US with only 5k miles on it. Absolutely love the bike so far, best bike I’ve owned so far… Yes, mapping is a little jerky, but wow what a bike. I’m coming off a Versys 650 (which I loved), but the FJ/MT09 is in a different universe entirely.

    Great review. I've had my tracer for about nine months and 5000 miles now and I love it. It's my second bike, (had a transalp 7000 before) and its by miles the better bike. It's light, nimble and accelerates like f**k. My only real gripe was the standard Dunlop tyres, they take ages to provide any feel in the wet and the cold. Got an Avon storm 3d on the back and that has improved things a lot, planning on doing the front in may.
    It's not a looker (the alp was beautiful) but who cares what a bike looks like from the saddle.

    Getting the ECU reflashed is the best thing I have done to my FJ09. I could live with it before but even with a very steady hand it can get jerky real quick. The flash is only about $300 bucks USD but worth every penny. Not only do you get butter smooth throttle response, but you get the speed limiter removed, better fan profiles, quick shift support and an extra 3hp and torque!! The screen color is the way it is, the left LCD is a custom made panel for this bike but the right is some generic LCD (hence the difference in color). It also covers 3 info screens and the maintenance menu so it's not a crisp as the left side.Oh and the rear shock has rebound as well, it's tucked away on the left side of the shock.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 8 lety

      That's great to know. Cheers Joseph! Is it a commonly available map, or custom created for you by the garage? I'm sure many more folks would buy this bike if they knew they could do this (Including me, when my ship finally comes in!). I guess the screen thing is just the result of mass manufacture and cost saving. Can't be avoided sadly. I'm disappointed in myself that i didn't find the rear shock adjustment. But hey-ho. Only so much you can do in an hour, and the bike was so fun to ride i didn't want to waste time just looking at it! Cheers for watching buddy.

      I had mine done by 2WheelDynoWorks, there are other shops but they are the main ones. Plus they spend time tuning on the dyno and have maps for different exhaust systems and will reflash for free if you decide to swap in a new one.

  • @demetriospapavasiliou8167

    I own one of these and keep it in B or standard mode most of the time. Totally eliminates that twitchy throttle in the low end, and once you pass 4-5000 rpm it's the same power as any of the other modes. "A" mode is only really useful if you're trying to do wheelies or you're just really trying to be a hooligan, which is fine, just makes any kind of low speed or around town riding unnecessarily difficult. Also you don't really start to feel the power until you get past 7000rpm. There's a bit of a dead spot between 5 and 6000 rpms

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 4 lety

    @DavidJames-df6nj Před 5 lety +1

    Have found the standard screen causes lots of helmet turbulence and noise, and have replaced it with a bigger one. Less helmet turbulence but more overall windage causing the bike to wobble a bit at speed. Thinking a sport screen might be better..or no screen at all. Any thoughts?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 5 lety

      Hi David. I’m a big g fan of small or no screen. I find that I’d rather have more wind on my chest but for that wind to be ‚clean‘. This means I’m not so protected, but it’s actually quieter and smoother. Of course this is made easier by the fact that I’ve become a bit of a fair weather rider lately, so I don’t need the protection for commuting in bad weather so much!

      I'd love to! I've never ridden a V4 so much like the V-twins it would be yet another first for me. I'll see what i can do but i think it might be tight this side of spring! I'd refer to the throttle characteristics as more of a 'snatchy transition from off to on and vice versa' than hunting. That's a problem that seems to be restricted to kawasaki at the moment! My versys and the 1000 i tested included. Ride safe yourself Charlie 😆

  • @TheSogmeister
    @TheSogmeister Před 8 lety +1

    I have an MT09 Tracer too and I have to admit you are right about the low end throttle in A mode, its horrendous. While riding in town I ride in B mode for the the softer throttle response but once I get to the open road I switch to Standard or A mode depending what I am riding. I guess this is what happens with the ride by wire throttle. Other than that I love my Tracer to bits. I added a locally made exhaust to it and it is the best sounding hooligan bike I have ever been on.

      It's a shame isn't it. Otherwise that machine is perfect! I'd much rather a properly engineered single fueling map than the obvious workaround of a 3-mode system! Keep enjoying it though mate. Maybe santa will get my letter and I'll have one too next year!

    • @TheSogmeister
      @TheSogmeister Před 8 lety +1

      Yep its a real shame. Before this I was riding a Honda X11 which had superb fueling and very smooth. Maybe later there will be an ECU update or fix we can do to cure the slow speed A mode throttle response but until then I will ride the slow speed in B mode. Thanks mate, i hope so too, this bike is crazy fun.

    • @TheSogmeister
      @TheSogmeister Před 8 lety

      Fully agreed. I was a bit disappointed especially it being a brand new machine, but the rest of the ride and sound make up for throttle. I choose to look at it like its part of its character, ha ha. You ride safe too mate.

    So which bike would you say is better the fz1n or the tracer 900 and why?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 5 lety

      Sorry for the essay but....
      I feel very differently about riding since i did the Tracer video. Now I'm all about the pure riding experience. Riding just for fun and doing it when the conditions are best. So currently I really enjoy the fact that my FZ1n has no screen (wind on your chest keeps the speeds down, and there's ZERO buffeting from screen turbulence) and no electrical wizardry interfering with my riding. I also enjoy the more aggressive riding position of the FZ1n which makes me feel more connected to the bike, more in contact with the road and increases the feeling of control in the tight twisties.
      With all of that being said, the Tracer is still a great bike. For commuting, touring, scratching whatever, it'll do an awesome job. The engine is fabulous and despite the FZ1N having 30-odd more horses, the torquey triple puts the power down in a much more usable range and so unless you're up in the FZ1's power band (or the FZ1 is ECU tuned), the Tracer actually feels more punchy at lower revs. On the negative side, when I tried the Tracer the fuelling was terrible. WAY worse than on my now 13 year old FZ1n. You'd have thought they'd have smoothed that EFI mapping out by now! (Perhaps it's better on the 2019 models. I'm hoping to find out this year as I plan to test ride a 2019 MT-09 at some point.)
      Also the Tracer's screen, although the best of the bunch of bikes I tried at the time, was still not perfect and caused lots of buffeting and noise at almost all speeds. But if you wanted to ride in all weathers and for long distances, even a bad screen is less exhausting than no screen at all!
      So it really depends on what you want to do with it. For me, I'm in no rush to trade my old FZ1 in for something newer. But maybe that'll change when i try the naked version of the Tracer later this Spring!?

    • @stephenspiteri_zunkus

      AndyManCam I happen to own an MT09SP and in all honesty don’t find the throttle snatchy at all. I had tried an older MT from 2014 which had horrendous low speed jerkiness. I have as yet never tried a tracer but they’re supposed to be with the same electronics now. I do have two friends with a Tracer GT and they say that they’re as smooth as can be. Well, maybe you got a sick variant. Your Honda does feel more premium though, I did consider buying it as well. I was also considering the Triumph Street triple RS. Triple engines sound so good, that’s what swayed me to the MT and the fact it’s more comfy for the long hauls.

    Great engine. Fun to ride, but suspension needs setting up with new rear shock to improve the handling. You notice more as you press on when the front gets a bit flirty. The seat is fine till you do an hour plus in the saddle and the screen is diabolical. Triple motor has bags of character and its light and nimble. I don't think you could be too disappointed with the price though.

      +Mat Newton Did notice a bit of skippy front when i was pressing on. But then i was being enthusiastic with the twisty bit! I actually found the screen to be the best of the little bunch i tested, but there's no fit all solution with screens. All in all, totally agree with the price. Very reasonable for the machine you get. Few tweaks and it could be awesome.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 7 lety

      +B Simpson Financial windfall must always be at least planned for! TBH the snatchy throttle was the single worst part about the bike. I tried not to go on about it too much, but it was there throughout. I regret not making that clear now as it was the main negative for me. I still love the bike and given the means, I'd get one today. But I'd also want to address that horrible fuelling. Luckily as I've seen with the boosterplug on my Versys, it's possible and the bikes character can be cheaply and easily transformed.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 7 lety

      +B Simpson I think you could get used to it, but i also said the same about my Versys. But then as soon as i fitted the boosterplug i can't imagine not having it. By removing the need to use the clutch on tight or slow corners (those peculiarities you mention!) It transformed my riding and i was smoother, faster and safer through the twisties. I think the 'you could get used to it' response is me maintaining the British stiff upper lip! When in reality I'd much prefer to not have to think about the bikes shortcomings.

  • @gurnstein
    @gurnstein Před 8 lety +1

    If I've got a factory bias, then it's Yamaha. I've always loved their motorbikes, but too many of their bikes suffer from poor low speed fuelling and as a company they really let themselves down by not addressing the problem. That said I found that running in B Mode sorts the fueling out around town on the Tracer. At least in comparison to my TDM it felt relatively stable with hardly any jerkiness. The Tracer itself was really fun to ride, very sprightly and handled just how I like a bike to handle. Much better than my TDM for sure. The riding position felt too sporty for me though and it was a bit too vibey when giving it the beans, so wouldn't suit me as I do a lot of touring.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 8 lety

      I guess a lot of your opinion is the direction you're coming from. I know the buzziness you mean, but after doing 2000 miles on the Versys this summer, that buzz was nothing to me! :D You're bang on about the fueling though. It's exactly the same as Drift with their Camera freezing. Which leads me to 1 conclusion. They CAN'T fix it. Don't know how. All of that said, loved the handling and if money were no object I'm sure a powercommander would smooth things out!

    • @Kwakboy
      @Kwakboy Před 8 lety +1

      +Andy Man Cam Nope, it won't sort the poor low speed fuelling issue, or better said entirely solve the issue.
      Because even a PC can't alter the mapping in that culprit low revs. :(
      You would have to reflash the ECU for that first, with a after market reflash...
      See mt09.motorcycle-talk.com/forum/mt-09-technical/1723-aftermarket-ecu-flash.html for more detailed information.
      It involves removing ECO mode, pair valve, disabling the fuel cut off on decel, the rev limiters in the different gears and changing the electronic throttle opening parameters...
      It will cost you though but changes the bikes behaviour completely. ;)

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 8 lety

      So it is possible, simply by completely re-engineering the whole system to be like it should have from the factory! How are yamaha not embarrassed about this?!

    • @Kwakboy
      @Kwakboy Před 8 lety

      Andy Man Cam
      They should be embarrassed looking at Kawasaki, Triumph and others who've sorted it ages ago already... and they have to meet emission standards too.
      Gives us tinkerers some room for having fun on improvement though. ;)
      The re-engineering, as you call it, is already done by quite a few professional tuners.
      As said it can cost you some serious money on top off just buying and riding the bike in stock trim.
      Not to mention some other flaws like suspension...
      But still I love my 09 and wouldn't trade it for another bike! ;)
