Thank you so much for watching!
Great video. The lifespan of my German made Fantech fan was 7-10 years. I had to replace mine after 9 years of operation when it became this loud.
Thanks for this comment. We have had ours for ten years this month and it just started running loudly.
Thank you. It’s midnight on a Friday and I am outside (a widow) trying to turn it off. This was very helpful!
You are very welcome, Carol. It sounds like your bearings may be near the end of their life. Be sure to have the fan replaced.
I would also recommend that you to do a radon test after you get the radon fan back online if you haven't done one in the last two years.
Thanks for posting this. My neighbor has a unit that generates a high pitch whining sound that is very annoying. I think this may be the reason. On quiet evenings, it sounds like I live in an industrial area.
JoeKidde
You bet JoeKidde. High suction and high flow fans tend to be the loudest radon fans. The ones in this video are moderate flow, low suction fans, these are among the quietest radon fans.
-Jesse
Omg I live here in Anoka county and the fan sounds exactly like one bad one we couldn't even sleep. Thanks for the tips 👍
No problem Tom.
What fan do you currently have? There will be a label on the fan that says something like RadonAway RP145, AMG Maverick, or Fantech 2190.
@@AmericanRadonMitigation Can you let us hear the new one please?
@@santinojozefmiller7721 You can hear the new one in the video.
Thank you for posting this, our fan was installed 1 year ago and is making this 'broken' noise. Would you expect this to happen after 1 year?
You're welcome Steve. It very well could be. I have replaced a couple radon fans after just 6 months. The fans sounded like the noisy one in this video. The bearings were starting to get loud.
Is this what yours sounds like? Do you know the manufacture and model? What pressure is your manometer ( the U- shaped tube with the colored fluid attached to the radon vent pipe) reading?
I thought the new fan was loud. Is it quieter when the pipes are connected?
Yes, it is quieter when installed.
I just got one installed yesterday and find the new fan too noisy, can I box it with insulation to cut down on the noise?
It may be that vibration is transfering to your house. Is the fan in the attic or on the side of your house?
@@AmericanRadonMitigation the fan is in the garage and vents out the roof.
@@Lracnolip Did you ever find a way to cut down on the noise? We are having the same problem!
@@johnjenkins1707 no, it sux and wish l never got one.
Did the contractor do pressure field extension testing? High suction and high flow fans are the loudest. You may have an oversized fan that could be swapped for a quieter, more efficient one. What fan do you have?
Our is quiet but it's vibration on the wall it's attached to is so loud my daughter's can't sleep. How can I fix too much vibration?
It sounds like the vibration of the fan is transferring the structure of your home. If the fan or pipe is firmly attached to wood, you can try loosening it up a bit. We use a 1-inch backer rod between the pipe and framing to isolate vibration. This is basically a foam product you can get at a home center similar to a swimming pool noodle. You can see me install backer here czcams.com/video/TyCUneMCcLc/video.html
If you blink you'll miss it. It was the grey piece of foam that went between the insulated vent pipe and the 2x4 that I used to secure the pipe to the wall.
If your fan is on the outside of your house it may be causing vibration to transfer to the rim joist where the pipe penetrates the wall. We drill a hole that's half an in larger than the diameter of the pipe so we have room for backer rod and rubber to fill the gap so that the pipe doesn't touch the wood. That could be your issue.
LDVI rubber couplers are more flexible than the ones you have so you could also try swapping them out. They are used to attach the radon fan to the pipe. You can purchase them here radonpds.com/product-category/all-accessories/flexible-couplers/page/2/
Are they rebuildable? Mine is getting really loud
No, but they're not that expensive. Typically between $120 and $375.
Mine is getting louder then normal now. Can I unplug it until I can get someone put here to replace it?
Yes, you can unplug it. However, your radon levels will be elevated until you replace the fan.
Can the fan be installed horizontally?
No, the condensation would not be able to drain through the fan. Water would collect in the bottom half of a horizontal fan. Good question!
how much cost replacement?
need professional ?
Intown Sushi The cost depends on your radon fan location, your location, and the type of fan you have. Give us a call for an estimate 612-790-2928.
How much should it cost to replace?
We charge between 500 and 800 depending on the fan model and location. Fans in the attic take longer to replace since we have to set up drop cloths, and a ladder, and cleanup is more substantial.
i thought at the beginning was a loud bad fan
I totally nerd out on energy efficiency now. With proper sealing and suction point placement even some of the smallest radon fans are overkill. The smaller the fan, the quieter your radon system will be.
Both are too loud. I just got a new one of these and I can hear it constantly inside my home. I'm not sure it's worth slowly being irked to death by the noise to prevent a possibility of cancer. I really don't understand how they don't know how to make a quiet fan
Adding a noise suppressor can help reduce the noise.

how to replacement? My radonaway fan is noisy Model RP140 radonaway, DOM, May/2011
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Kyaw. You'll have to either do it yourself or call a radon mitigation contractor in your area. It is fairly straightforward once you get your replacement fan. Just be sure you turn the power off to the fan before you make the swap. You'll need a 5/16" nut driver or flat blade screwdriver to loosen the rubber couplers. Then swap the electrical from the old fan to the new and reinstall. Try to plumb the fan, as I believe they last longer when they are level. Then power it back up. I'd recommend doing another radon test at least every two years. A quality radon system should be able to get your radon levels below 1 pCi/L. If not, you might want to contact a mitigator that knows how to achieve that.
It looks like, from the language in the description of the #1 selling 145cfm fan that it's made in a foreign country. China's a good guess. That lack of QC explains all the reported failures in less than a year. Hey, they can make it over there for 12.99, and they're only charging $125 (making $110 off each of us)..........what's wrong with that?
I find it hilarious that you think China's responsible for the pricing.
