  • Activating a passive radon system from the attic. I discuss being prepared by making use of two different brands and models of radon fans. I primarily use the AMG Festa Maverick but I always have a Radon Away Rp-145 on hand. I then show you a little follow through technique to ensure thorough radon removal.

Most of the weight of a house is on the outside walls. With slab flooring, as the foundation settles, it pulls the outside edge of the slab down but the soil settles less and less the more toward the center you get. This causes the cracking you are seeing.

Never had a problem using 45 couplings to take a pipe AWAY from a stud to install a fan on it....and then using another one BACK to the original pipe! You also want to make sure that the fan you are installing is the best for "air flow" on your system based on your manomter levels. Sometimes, you should change to different fans based on your levels!

What's your typical manometer reading with the RP145 ? The wizards that installed mine have multiple floor and wall pick up points and have NOTHING in the garage. Yet garage is 2 car doors, and side door. Maybe they thought the doors would provide mitigation ? I would have put the take off in the garage and verified just how far out the collection zone went. Thinking I need higher suction fan.

Garage floor doesn’t appear to have any control joints. May be why it cracked where it did.

Hi Radon Man, I was wondering what fan I should use for my sump pit. I live in a duplex with a basement that is divided with a cement wall from my duplex neighbor who refuses to cooperate with radon mitigation. Each side is about 1500 square feet. I have sealed the sump pit, the expansion joints, and caulked around where the floor and wall meet, and caulked little cracks in floor and walls. Will a fan be worthwhile if my neighbor doesn't seal his sump, etc.? I have an Airthings radon monitor upstairs and our numbers are currently below 1.86. Sealing has only brought it down a little over one full number. It was 2.94. Should I consider getting a heat exchange for my situation or will a fan possibly work? Is it better to have fan in attic vs outdoor in Wisconsin?

What is your reading in the basement ? Another guy's reading dropping from 10 to 5 when he went upstairs. US EPA guideline is 4. He mitigated and his basement dropped a lot and upstairs was .25 - really, really low.

@@DanTheManIOM the basement is now 4.08. I definitely think it would be worth mitigating with a fan but I don’t know how effective it might be since I’m on one side of a duplex.

@@robertzobert1953 It'd be easier if you were 5, or 10. No question, mitigate it. Even at 4, I think I would still try. I have a college friend who never smoked and has lung cancer, who knows how it came about. She's been battling it for years, What if it came from radon ? I just bought one of those digital radon detectors yesterday, going to find out what I have. All the houses around me have systems.

Nice work. I hit that thumbs-up for you.
So, this set-up (piping) was already there? They just didn't spring for the fan?
The garage floor cracking is probably what you said about not enough gravel. Also, maybe little or no rebar? When would you switch from using 3-inch PVC compared to 4-inch? Is it based on the foot-print square footage of the basement? Thank you.

Thanks Patrick! In this video, I was activating a passive radon system. In my area, they are all that is required for new construction. Check out my videos on passive systems if you are interested.
