We chatted with her for a few minutes and enjoyed talking to her. It's true, we in the United States get very minimal in the way of learning about geography in school unless we take the time to teach ourselves either by watching documentaries on PBS , watching travel shows like Rick Steves' Europe , etc . @Gurey That's because in the states you have the one drop rule, which doesn't exist in all places around the world. They are Spanish, in the same way that African Americans are African. I find it odd how Americans view someone as black who has mostly white ancestors as long as there has been a black person somewhere in their ancestry.

    • @lmn6023
      @lmn6023 Před 3 lety

      @Gurey Because over the years they mixed with the Spanish. If a Spanish person and a say, Nigerian person, get a child, the child is as much Spanish as it is Nigerian. No matter how dark or light its skin is. If they grow up in Spain, they are probably culturally more Spanish and if they grow up in Nigeria, they would be culturally more Nigerian.
      So, if these people are mixed and grew up in an country that is culturally closer to Spain than to wherever their other ancestors came from, it would only make sense that they view themselves as Spanish.

      @@naomicampana it's amusing how you used the phrase "not targeting you in particular" about twice. I guess you're avoiding trouble, lol. I come in peace 🤗
      I am from the Eastern part of Nigeria, that is, the Igbo tribe and the truth is, I have little or no knowledge about the Northerners (Hausas). I do know a lot about the Westerners (Yorubas) because I have lived all my life in the West but I can't say same for the Southerners. And we are all in the same Nigeria 😅
      I don't think any Nigerian sets out *not* to know anything about Africa and Africans. For me, it happened that I just wasn't just taught (I think the same applies for majority).
      Besides the recitation of African countries and capitals we did in primary school, the only other formal education I had about Africa came from my primary school French teacher who was Togolese.
      We might appear to know a lot about Ghana but that's majorly because they're a neighbouring country which has English as an official language. Thus, there are no language barriers. Also, we sort of have a going relationship with Ghana that we don't have with other African countries.
      For example; my secondary school, another Nigerian secondary school and Achimota School, Ghana has (or had) an annual tripartite games. We (our schools) took turns hosting the other country each year. I remember traveling to Ghana to partake in the Tripartite games and Achimota students coming down to my school the next year. This experience was not only fun, it was an opportunity to experience a new culture, learn and make new friends. I hope you understand this situation now.

You guys deserve a lot of respect and love. I have interacted with black people in France and I'm pretty cool with them. Our family bonding, the general amicable society, rich food which are similar to Indian or South Asian culture. I think it's really important we protect our indigenous culture but also improve our lives.

      Kiran, I have lived in India as a student from Mauritius. Most Indians are very prejudiced towards dark people bordering on open racism. They said bad things to African students. As I speak Hindi fluently, I could understand their insults and discern their contempt and hatred for African people. I had a lot of African friends and they would tell me about their experiences in India. Later, I even travelled to Kenya and met my old college pal after ten years. What you write in your post are wishful and naive thoughts far removed from the stark realities. Sharasha bakhwash!

    While it is undeniable that Africa still suffers from extreme poverty and instability in a lot of its region, the common western conception of the continent being one big dusty land with no water is downright insulting. A lot of countries deserve to be recognized not only as parts of africa but as individual countries, we are the most diverse peoples in the world, we range from the whitest people in north Africa to the darkest in central africa, we speak multiple languages and we have to each its own identity, I'm tired of seeing videos about africa, I want videos about Burundi, About Drc, I want uganda and mali to be recognized as they are and not just proud african countries

      Do i think it'll change anything? no. westerners are too arrogant most of the time to see beyond their nose, beside they are dead people, they just don't know it yet, their lifestyle is catching up to them. Western traditional ideas and mindset is collapsing, but Africa is very weak in leadership. You say that Westerners think that Africa is a barren wasteland, so tell me what are Westerners doing there for the last 500 years? Those Westerners that colonized and exploited Africa know that it is abundant in almost all raw materials they might need, and they remain a threat to Africa to this day, only difference is they now have China to compete with for Africa. As an African and a Kenyan, I am sad to say I knew so little of the content in this video. Liked, subscribed and commenting to say this was excellent, the kind of content we need and have so desperately little of. Well produced, beautiful visuals and smooth narration by an African (sounds Kenyan but I'm biased) voice, absolutely well done na asanteni sana kwa juhudi zenu.
