So, what the heck even is a benchmark ball? Well for me, it’s that one that comes with everywhere, is the first ball out of my bag, can be used all over the lane, and most importantly, the one I know how to adjust off of with other pieces of equipment in my arsenal. I say that’s most important because in bowling, there are almost an infinite number of variables to consider when choosing equipment. When you’re on the lane though, you have to know what each piece in your arsenal does and rather than knowing those million variables, knowing how each piece is different from your benchmark gives you a much more consumable way of understanding each shape.
So having a benchmark that matches up with your game and your eye is pretty darn important to building an effective arsenal, and each of the options we are going to analyze gives a different, but still benchmark type reaction that will cater to different types of bowlers based on how they see the lane and release the ball.
Now, these aren’t the only benchmark options. In fact, any ball can be a benchmark if you trust it that much and can build an arsenal around it. But typically, the mid-tier bowling balls tend to be best. They’re most often solid cover stocks and symmetrical cores. But today we are going to take a look at a few that fit those qualifications, and a few that don’t.
One more quick thing, all of these pieces were hit with a 2000 pad before being thrown just to ensure there was not a significant difference based on surface finish.

Personally, I use my Storm IQTour as my benchmark, although if I know my league pattern, I will typically start with my Storm Phaze II and switch to the IQ Tour when I need smoother shape during transition or burn. Two questions though: First, why didn't you choose the IQ Tour in this vid, when it is known to be a benchmark ball? Second, you briefly mentioned "...as the IQ Tour used to be." Could you please elborate on what you meant? Thank you, Joe
