Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
As Columbia reworks its lineup to now feature all Hk22 covers, they round out the bottom of their performance categories with the messenger powercor pearl. This low end pearl features the same cover as Kaboom, Hk22 reflex pearl, and is powered inside by the mid rg and mid differential Messenger Powercor.
For the layout, I went with a 4x5.25x3.75 2LS layout. This one is honestly an Experiment. There's been lots of releases with similar specs to this one, so this is meant to see a different look with a piece I have a decent understanding of what its supposed to do. This is probably not a strategy I would use with a big asym, but for a lower tier piece of equipment like this one, sometimes its fun to see what a new layout gives you.
AND ON THE LANES…the messenger pearl was great. This is a simple piece with a simple path to the pocket. It provides easy length to get it to the spot downlane that it needed to get too, and a very usable motion off that spot. The messenger Didn't force me into any specific area at the arrows, but definitely needed to get outside and into some friction to do the right thing.
But my favorite part about throwing this one was its Repeatability on the shots that get to the 4 board. If I got it to that spot, there was a high likelihood that it was going to strike, and that the shape was going to even look great doing it. Sometimes with lower end pieces like this, they'll hesitate to get up to the pocket even on the good shots, but not with the messenger pearl.
However, on the misses towards the inside part of the lane, it was too clean and the shape can only be described as flippy. Sure, there may be a time that that is the right way to get through the pins, but its pretty rare and typically is a recipe for splits. The key here is know when the time is right to use this piece, and having a good set of complementary pieces to go with it.
So if I were to add the messenger powercor pearl to my arsenal, I'd likely pair it with a Rattler NU and the Track Cypher. The NU will be fun and reliable in the part of the lane just outside of where the messenger would be best, and then the Cypher be the reliable, strong but even reacting solid piece. The Messenger fits in-between these two so it gives you the flexibility to tweak the cover to best match your playing style.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Supra GT from Motiv and here I see a piece that is about as clean through the first 40' of the lane as the messenger, but with its increased differential, makes a more pronounced move towards the pocket. Players with a lower rev rate will likely match up more effectively with one to fill out the bottom of their arsenal.
The I took a look at the Lightning Blackout from storm and here I see a shape that is pretty much the same. Now, If you want to try and define the difference, I'm all ears, but the only thing I can think of is that the Lightning might be able to be used a bit earlier in the heart of the lane as ReX Pearl is a stronger cover, but at its box reactagloss finish, this one and the messenger pearl see the fit the same part of an arsenal.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is 2-Handers. High speed and high revs always produce a lot of strikes, but those players who can stay around the friction with this messenger are going to yield great results. It won't force them to move way in, and it also won't struggle to get through early friction, which is about all you can ask for out of a low end piece.
The second recommendation is for lefties. Because this piece looks so good when I can keep it up the lane, I see it being a great option to beat that urethane stretch without needing huge angles through the fronts. The messenger pearl will clear the fronts even when they're blown up and will be able to boom of the mid lane friction brought on my that inevitable purple hammer traffic.
The all new Messenger Powercor Pearl might not be the flashiest release of the year, but in the right hands, could be what you need to deliver your next perfect game.

Storm DNA Coil Ball Review (4K) | Bowlers Paradise
Funny, but I bowl two-handed and find this ball totally controllable and the hook is anything but a hockey stick shape. I suppose it all comes down to how it is drilled and how it comes off your hand.
Tackett averaged 230 and that has never happened on the tour, so whatever ball or balls that he used to accomplish that should all be your top 5!!!!
Do you know anyone that throws it like EJ besides EJ? Those scores ain’t because of the ball. He’d average 230 with rubber if he had too
Any chance you're going to look at the upcoming Brunswick Vaporize? Curious how the Outer Limits pearl would compare to it.
What would be some good complimentary pieces to this ball?
Is this with the 14 pound ball with the higher RG?
Yes, but you also have to take into consider how much faster a 14# ball spins than a 15#. The shift in core dynamics is at least somewhat intentional to match performance across weights.
Might be a stupid question but new to bowling. Got a. Ocean. Vibe loving it. 13lb but what is a new ball I should get. I guess a main ball and the vibe be my spare. Not sure. My buddy has a black widow 3.0 he said he will gift to me because it’s not for him. But it’s 14lb is that to close in weight to my vibe. any suggestions sry if there dumb
When they remade this a few years ago without HK22 I bought the blue solid. It didn't fit. But in much younger days I had about every messenger they made. This spot in my bag is taken up by the Brunswick Endeavor.
Ben--being that Brunswick has retired the Knockout Bruiser, what similar options might you recommend here in August 2024?
Good for straight throwers ?
“I’ll be painting myself blue like mega mind” I damn near spit out my drink
You’re welcome.
My next ball is going to be the ion pro. I just got my theorem last week. After the ion i am getting the scorpion strike.
Hi - I’m in a junior bowling league. My question is what your thoughts are on the COLUMBIA 300 MESSENGER POWERCOR PEARL bowling ball? I’m 14 , use a 13 lb bowling ball now, and my league average is 145. Many thanks for your advice - Ronnie
Columbia 300 Messenger Powercor Pearl Review (4K) | Bowlers Paradise czcams.com/video/izP6ksDphUs/video.html All thoughts are in there my friend.
And I'm a lefty and love this ball.
This combined with the vaporize will be a nasty two piece combo
I got a rattle nu for the reason you say this ball will be good for 2 handers. Messenger Powercor looking like a potential step down for when the fronts get toasted
You should still try this layout on an asym, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised
Idk about Ben, but if I used that layout on an asym, it would hook at my feet and lock up.
@@andrewweltlich9065 the 70 degree mass bias allows for the ball to push further down the lane very easily and the stronger pin makes it strong throughout the lane, now if you did a strong mass position with a strong pin then yeah 100 percent, lock up and go forward.
@@brendensramek7440 True, but a 4 inch pin and 30 degree VAL angle is going to make the ball hook at my feet, even with the 70 degree drill angle. However I'm specifically talking about me, not the average bowler.
@@andrewweltlich9065 you not have much tilt at all or super high track bowler or something?
@@brendensramek7440 it would make sense if I was, but no. I actually have a fairly low track. My PAP is over and down, which might be the reason.
I like this layout.....I use this for all my Symmetric balls. We bowl the same so it's cool seeing you use this layout. Great review as always!
Nice clean benchmark type reaction.
14 lb absolute is a house killer
Wow I just ordered a Hammer Effect to put in a bag alongside my Absolute Power. Looks like I M not going to get much separation between the 2
Put some surface in the absolute power. They’ll separate significantly if you do that.
Leaning into the megamind lovin it also improvement on music and overall delivery since the earlier videos. Please keep reviews coming and thank you for all the efforts you put into these videos.
My pleasure!
My dude! This looked so good for you. Should I get it as a rev dominate lefty? My OG infinity is dead after summer league and I need to replace it
I think that’d be a great replacement honestly.
This does also have Cohesion, the C in HK22C. the same additive as in the Effect, and the two Brunswick Pro launches!
Words that make the ball hook more.
Great video. Question about your red wrist tape. Do you use it for ball support (no thumber), wrist support, or a combination? I’m a hybrid bowler where I use my thumb as the primary but due to shoulder injuries and surgeries I’ve bowled two handed mixed in the past 5 years or so and now ultimately adopting one hand no thumb the last few weeks.
Urethane moves more in my swing with no support hand which makes me uncomfortable when trying urethane. I have a storm power glove on the way which I’m hoping will help for when I need to throw urethane. Appreciate anything you use or have tried that may help with stability, specifically throwing urethane in this style
I use it for wrist support. If you're looking for ball support, you could try a tacky skin protection tape like this one from genesis and see if that helps? www.bowlersparadise.com/products/genesis-pro-texx-skin-protection-tape-navy?_pos=2&_sid=b3947d038&_ss=r
Oh my............Getting closer to "Blue Ben" I see!!!
Should time out great for Halloween!
Glad you like this one! It’s sick!! This has the cohesion additive along with the HK22 like the effect but in a solid version, very good direction the brands are heading forward with!
I want to see this vs the mesmerize
Me too. I’m genuinely excited to throw the mesmerize.
Thinking of adding this to my harsh reality...tnt...zen pearl..hustle m/m and blue hammer...thoughts?
Seems like a solid addition if you ask me.
Wanna add this & Attention Star to my 3 ball bag, am I crazy?
Kind of, but I'd probably do the same thing lol. They're both really fun to throw, they just have a lot of overlapping qualities.
@@bowlersparadise2255 I seen ur reviews & immediately wanted them both 😂 thx for the reply
Nice video Ben.
Thanks!
As a 2h myself, I see what you were going with putting that layout on it, but for clean cover balls (especially syms) don't like those in-between pin-cog layout numbers. Cause in 2ls (for those of yall who don't know) Pin down is anything 3 or less, pin up is anything 4 or more when it comes to pin-cog distance. 3.5 is that middle ground between the two, and when you put that pin-cog distance on a clean cover bowling ball, it will give you that over under reaction. Too quick from straighter and too clean from inside. I don't really care for pin down clean balls cause they don't match with my high rev/high speed game, so going 4 or 4.5 pin-cog would help the ball slow down a bit more in the midlane so you could get a bit more stable reaction from inside However, you did hit the nail on the head with adding surface would blend it a bit more. Which is why I don't use much shine on anything, even the cleaner stuff, Its always a 3k spinner or a worn out 1500 by hand. You are also bowling on a fresh house shot.......
Ben, so glad to hear you talk about hitting a ball with surface. I'm finding more and more that anything out of box is always too clean for me and I usually end up hitting it with surface. The Crimson Jackal for example. Lots of corner pins with it until I took the cover off and hit it with 2000. Now it's a beast.
I liked the crimson’s box surface, but yeah. Polish is tough to do right, but my 3k pad solves just about anything.
Would a Tundra Blue be a great replacement for a Fate?? 👀
Short answer - yes.
Do you plan to cover the Max Thrills? I have the solid and on the dry wood lanes I’m bowling on, I’m not always getting enough length so I’m debating picking pearl version or the Supra GT. Any advice would be appreciated!
Unfortunately no to the thrills. Pieces at that tier are hard to justify reviewing. I know they're great balls as I've seen them go down the lane (the yellow pearl is really good), but I won't be doing anything. Face value though, I like the Max Thrill pearl a touch more than this one.
@@bowlersparadise2255 gotcha. Thanks for the opinion!
Thanks for this video review. I have the Supra Rally, would it make sense to get the Supra GT?
Motiv says the GT is supposed to a little stronger, so if you like the shape but find the Rally too clean it might be worth it!
I certainly wouldn’t carry both myself if that answers your question. It works as a replacement, but not as an additional piece.
You’re so awesome lol just subscribed love the ball reviews!!
Appreciate it Brandon!
Mr silver certified
Better than some other nicknames I’ve gotten.
Sweet video! Would you recommend the violent collision or hammer effect for mostly bowling on house shots
Honestly you can’t go wrong with either of those choices.
Is it suitable for low rev player and stroker player?
Certainly!
DNA coil was terrible out of box. I always tend to take the bigger pearls and sand them down to 2000 and then back up to 4000. Polish for me on asyms always give me over under
See, I liked the box surface on my coil. I agree that it could also look good minus the polish, but that one wasn’t too bad. Again, inconsistent finish with reactagloss.
@@bowlersparadise2255 the coil was the first reactagloss ball I’ve tried out of box after the video from CTD showing that reactagloss would affect the balls ability to absorb oil. They’ve fixed it now though. Just not a fan of polish on asyms for me they get too clean
I wonder if Roto meant for this to be called the Strike Cell, but just gave up and let people call it the X Cell 😂
Possibly!
I think the “best blue balls” title is going to raise some eyebrows with the dudes in your audience 😂
I’ll make sure BOWLING is all in caps lol
Maybe I’m just not very keen on the issue but I’ve had no problems with reactagloss and the attention star I have. It is really consistent, only issue seems to be me.
I had no issues with it on my attention star as well as a couple others, but for every one that’s good, there seems to be one that’s bad.
Reacta gloss is so bad imo..out of the box it’s just fine then you get some games on it and it’s so over/under
Reacta Gloss has an over/under reaction for me too. I knock it off as well. Harsh Reality Pearl looked more blended at 4K nice video!
Come onnnn my guuuyyyy, if you’re gonna talk about surface needing adjusted in other brands videos but only change surface in the storm videos, nooo fair. 😢
Lol this is a fair assessment, but it’ll become more common
@@bowlersparadise2255 yaaaaay thank you.
What finish do you think it's best at?
Depends on a LOT of factors. No surface fits all forms of
I would have loved this one at 4k fast
A little late to the video, but will this be a good Outlook replacement? I loved that ball and also had a EBI poured messenger at thought Reflex was a clean but mild cover. Thanks for your help Ben!
Hi there appreciate the vid, I'm a 1H no thumb bowler and right now I use a BW ghost pearl. The attention star and the violent collision seem nice but which would pair better with my current ball?
The Unpredictability and Over-under reaction is due to the Semtex material, the Scorpion Low Flare having this kind of character. Thanks for honest review.
The Low flare only did this when it lane shined.
