The Cypher is Track’s newest strong benchmark piece, and is a step above the sensor solid in overall performance as it features the MR-8 solid cover with that HK22 base material finished to 2000 abralon out of the box. But even more exciting is the redesign and rerelease of the synergy core with a higher 2.54 RG and an .047 differential.
Knowing this piece was going to be a smooth arcing piece no matter what layout I put on it, I decided to lean into that strength with a 4.5x4.5x2.5 2LS layout. Its a stronger version of layouts I’ve had a lot of success with on pieces like this, and my hope was to see a smooth but moderately continuous shape.
AND ON THE LANES… even though I knew this was going to be a strong piece, the out of box from the cypher was way more than I expected. Being that this one is in a similar category as the 900 Global Xponent, I was hoping that this one would work a little more effectively in the track area, but instead, I think we have something much better than that on our hands here.
See, one of my favorite bowling balls of all time is the Hyroad Nano. I absolutely adored that ball, and this all new Cypher from Track is very reminiscent of that piece from storm. When the Cypher clears the front part of the lane, the higher RG allows the ball to spin up a bit later and boom off the spot. It’s a great mixture of blending out the friction with having pop off of the spot, and it only got better with each passing throw.
Looking at the potential downsides of this piece, I think the performance of the Cypher will tame off quickly and more so than some other pieces. Anytime a ball comes out of the box with this much surface on the cover, that’s probably going to be expected, but also, the Cypher wanted to be in the oily part of the lane and the cover absorbed it quickly. I’d probably still run with the same layout, but I’d definitely prepare myself for this one to be a different ball after some use.
So then as the Cypher transitions itself into being more of a benchmark style reaction, I think pairing it with the Theorem as well as the new Columbia 300 Kaboom would make for a great 3 ball arsenal. The Theorem has proven itself to be one of the Brunswick Brands best releases of this season, and the core specs of the Cypher and the Kaboom are similar, so if you like one, you’re likely to enjoy the other. It’s a bag that would have limitations in a tournament setting, but one that would be great for just about any house shot.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the previously mentioned 900 Global Xponent and here I see a piece that I can only really describe as easy going when compared to the Cypher. Getting the cypher to strike consistently felt more like work while the Xponent breezes through the track area and shapes well off the spot. I’d imagine you’ll start to see a good amount of overlap in these two pieces as the cover on the Cypher wears in.
Then I took a look at the Evoke from Motiv and the only difference I see is that the Evoke is just slightly asymmetrical. You can tell by how it slows down a bit more in the hook phase and gets going just a bit more forward than the Cypher. If you’re between these two pieces, think about how you want the ball to go through the pins as the Cypher will likely be more continuous than the Evoke.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with the Cypher from Track. The first is bowlers who have struggled with benchmark style pieces in the past. The Cypher is not your prototypical benchmark piece, and I think the difference in core dynamics paired with the strong cover could give these bowlers a look they can rely on even though that might not have been an option with other, similar pieces.
The second recommendation is for bowlers who deal with a high volume of oil. Clearly, this Cypher wants to hook, and it is going to be much more effectively used when it has some volume to work with. So if you sometimes struggle to get the ball up to the headpin or through the pin deck because of a lack of traction on the lane, look no further than this one from Track.

This is the one I was really looking forward to. I think this will be fantastic on the left with my style. Good stuff!
I just got a Cypher in a 12 lb. This ball was a lot stronger than I expected. On a fairly dry house shot, I was laying the ball on the 35 board and trying to get it around 10 at the break point. I had no problem throwing strikes!
lower rev/lower speed "stroker" looking for ideas for a continuous ball for use on oil.. currently use a Radical Outer Limits on medium oil and a Nu Blue Hammer on light oil... any suggestions on what to look for to complete a 3 ball arsenal for recreation house shot bowling? great review as always! Wondering how similar this is to the motiv pride? I usually start league off with that and sometimes it doesn’t have enough kick, would this be a ball up? If not, what others would you suggest? Thanks!

I would love to know how this compares to the Dark Web Solid.
I think should be close but hk22 probably have smore snap. I know my dark web solid 4k and up will paint oil to the head and back end but will stay doing the same thing while others struggle
