    Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
I think the all new Road from Storm could be the most excited ive been about a new release in a while. The newest Utah creation features both a new cover in the REX Hybrid cover and a new-ish core, as the inverted Fe2 core has been modified with the new Ai core technology.
Full disclosure, I throw 14# balls. I only say that because it’s highly relevant to my layout as the Ai technology raises the 14# differential from .037 to .045 which equates to 20% more core strength. That led me to put a 4.5x5x5 2LS Layout which focuses on a bit more on increasing the downlane motion. My hope was that I could get the core to slow the ball down in the midlane and then see an aggressive and continuous move off the spot and through the pins.
AND ON THE LANES…to my eye, that Ai core change makes an enormous impact to the overall shape of this bowling ball. Even though The road got down the lane a bit cleaner than I had anticipated, the increase in core strength paired with that aggressive layout gets this thing to fly off the spot and roll about very heavy through the pins. On some of the hits, the ball looked like it was still flaring even through the pin deck which could just be the colors, but either way, it sure made knocking over all 10 look and feel really good.
But my favorite thing about this piece from Storm is the combination of new and old. The inverted Fe2 core has been around for a long time, and when they paired it with the ReX Peal cover for the night road, it was an instant favorite of mine. Going to from and advancing both the cover and the core technology but still keeping the roots of the hyroad legacy in this piece makes for a much more usable shape on today’s conditions.
However, on the list of downsides, there’s one that I just can’t ignore. When I was throwing these test shots and the couple times after, the road does not handle carry down at all. As soon as there was some push around the 8 board downlane, this one was not going to strike until I moved inside even further and looped around it. The road seems to match up best in situations where once it starts its hook phase, there’s no surprise patches of oil to alter that transition. The ideal path really is what we all beg for at nationals, but so few of us actually achieve.
But, if you were to pair this one with a Roto Grip Tour Dynam-x and a Virtual Energy Blackout, I think you’d be able to make up for the gap in performance of the road. The Tour Dynam-x is in my opinion, one of the best benchmark pieces available today, and the VEBO is super clean but handles carry down really well. The Road fits neatly in between the those two options and when there’s friction to bounce off of, it almost certainly will provide the best look of the three.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Primal Shock from Motiv and here I see a shape that’s actually pretty similar to the road, just less hook overall. Ideally, the primal shock likes to be thrown as straight up the lane as you can get away with, but if you’re going to swing it, there better be some friction to work with. If your league or bowling center tends to hook a lot due to a lack of oil volume, you’ll likely see more success with this one from Motiv.
Then I took a look at the Ebonite Big Time SE and even though the core numbers are somewhat similar to the road, the shape of this one is much smoother and even front to back. Being that the Big Time has a sanded pearl cover, that doesn’t come as much of a surprise, and I could totally see carrying both pieces as even though they’re likely to be good in similar parts of the lane, the Road and the Big Time get to the pins in much different ways.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with the road from storm. The first is balanced bowlers. I think one of the primary reasons I saw any struggle with the road is because I am a rev dominant player. If your ball speed and rev rate are more balanced and allow you to play further to outside part of the lane, I think this piece is going to be a dream to add to your arsenal.

OH i couldn't wait to see you throw this bowling ball. WE both throw with two fingers, no thumb and 14lbs. It's listed as a symmetrical ball but snaps off the friction hard. Thanks for the review

I like the looks of it. One thing that I struggle with time to time is getting things to have enough motion because my speed sits around 18-19. So maybe this one could be a nice hooky lil option when the lanes are speaking that language.

I think if this one has a clean look to the pocket from way left, it’s gonna be tough to beat.

I'm trying to find a piece to fit in between my Brunswick Twist and Storm Phaze II. It would have been my Frantic, but after 10 years of heavy use, there's just no reviving it. I feel like this will the ball that will help me get further downlane than my Phaze II, but not as violent a reaction as my Absolute that's drilled for length/backend.

Motiv Hyper venom, the new lightning blackout from Storm or the Brunswick Ethos would all work well.

Hey Ben. Thanks for the awesome content. May I ask - what's up with the small hop you make after every release? Need to add, I'm a beginner who's still trying to build a physical game (it's a great day when I clear 200 and/or don't accidentally get stuck in my ball 10 times), so in no way am I trying to be condescending or critical of your game, which is clearly of a very high quality. I'm just confused as to why you have that bounce - to me it seems like if you have a bounce that pronounced, you're probably not arriving at the finished position with much balance or stability. Maybe you've got a knee injury, or any host of other explanations. Just curious about technique, as you clearly know what you're doing on the lanes. Thanks again for making so many killer videos. Know it's a ton of work.

Hey Gavin. You’re actually identifying the part of my game that drives me the most crazy.
The hop developed as a bad habit when I was learning how to bowl as I practiced a ton on wood approaches and struggled to stop. It came so naturally, but now when I’m bowling poorly, it’s one of the first things I try to stop.
The other side of that problem is my pace to the line varies day to day based on where my timing is at, so the hop tends to come out more on the days that I have to be quick to the line.
That and my stupid trail leg going a mile high are the two things I wish I had a magic potion to just fix, but instead I have to just work on it.

I'm trying to figure out what ball to get my son for the transition or late game 2 into game 3. He throws two handed and his BW 2.0 Hybrid is lights out for him in game one into game two. But, he struggles to keep the ball in the pocket at that point. He likes to stand on 30 and throw all day. I'm trying to decide if this is the right piece for him or if another pearl would be a good option. He want's a storm ball or an SPI ball. Personally, I told him get the outer limits pearl and call it a day. But, he wants his balls smelling nice, his joke not mine.
So what would you recommend? I'm stumped as I'm a stand right and throw it 17-20 miles an hour guy.

How does this compare with the night road, just a little earlier, or is there more of a difference?

Earlier and a bit stronger overall. The core is the biggest difference.

Do you think removing the reactoa gloss and putting maybe a 500 to 1,000 3,000 finish mght help with carry down?

Yes. If this ball came with the 4k fast finish I think it would have been perfect.

Being rev dominant mostly makes up for it. The 14# balls spin so much faster that they easily handle slight increases in RG and decreases in diff.

    • @ripvanrevs
      @ripvanrevs Před 3 měsíci

As a one hand no thumb old guy, I'm thinking of trying a 12 lb. I throw 14 and 15 but when I get too far left the ball return is in the way. Moving up on the approach slows my ball speed too much. I know the Brunswick brands have the 040 diff in 12 lb. Trying to decide which ball to try.

I’m all about sticking with the Hyroad nomenclature, but “The Road”? That’s the best we can come up with?
