It most definitely is not. The longest service time of a thunderbolt that we know about it 68 years, which goes to a few 1952 thunderbolts in Youngstown, Ohio. They are still up and running to this day.
My grandfather remembers when Newberry got their 1003s. He enjoys hearing this one just as much as I do every time we come down here to hear it. He says our old Thunderbolts were loudest sirens he has ever heard. He has been a volunteer firefighter in this county for over 55 years. Im going to start in a year.
Yeah!, me and a kazillion others, too!, even with the screen falling out, and a way cool wind-down at the end, such a great warning siren! (Ive seen birds nests in the ones in a big city where the screen is completely gone.)
40 years ago this was our primary paging device for our all Volunteer Fire Dept...Night and day...It broke once and sounded like a sick Moose mating call and the town didnt have the Money to fix it...LOL...I wish this could become a ring tone, just to get my old Blood flowing....
Most of the time they have them at old fire stations. But only seeing Model 2 and 3 and 7's gets pretty old after awhile.. I'm going to see a Modulator this weekend in Hamilton Ontario. The first Thunderbolt was in Illinois not even a 30 second view of it so I was so sad.

You guys recording the sirens go and have some fun recording the sirens. I dont have any around here. Im not making the 4 hour trek to Mobile until I need to do something there, THEN I will record their sirens (and MAYBE, just maybe head up to Birmingham, and rescue one of the Thunderbolt's outta their siren graveyard, People here in our city are starting to question why we dont have a tornado siren system yet. If the city isnt gonna create that system, I will.)

It’s a frame, that we call a “screen holder” which is designed to hold a screen which would prevent debris from entering the horn of the siren, unfortunately this specific siren had it’s screen fall out long ago, aswell as the “screen holder” being bent out of shape due to old age, and it now sits like that and has sat like that for god knows how long
1 question. Is the screen broken/out of place cuz the siren is old, or is just the wind or else that broke it? Stop. Bruh stop STOP ok congrats, you made it to the end You won nothing xd
Oh, alright. I was way off then. I remember hearing from somewhere that the Hi-Lo on the Whelen vortex R4 was meant for flooding. I thought the same would go for the thunderbolt 1003 as well. Thanks for letting me know :)
Its supposed to hi lo on the wind down but not like it did in this video. Take my video for example, it has had a broken solenoid for a over a year sadly and has ran 3 minutes for the past 5 or 6 years. My video: czcams.com/video/OJIU8sDDP5w/video.html
They’re gonna try and keep this siren up for as long as they can, it’s been fixed a couple times (recently it got new brushes and solenoids) and it’s supposed to be up for another 10-20 years.
Dang, It's beat up. if you were a replacer, what would you do? A: Call back up. B: Replace with a Federal signal 2001. C: Take it down. Answer: Replace with a Federal signal 2001.
This brings me back to when I used to be obsessed with thunderbolts. I've grown since then, but I enjoy the nostalgia i get from this video.
That thunderbolt is 59yrs old geez that has to be the longest thunderbolt life in history
