This 1993 Ford F150 SVT Lightning is a True Performance Truck, But What Exactly is the Point? *SOLD*

  • SOLD I'm torn. Genuinely. This 1993 Ford F150 SVT Lightning uses a formula that I could never argue with - take a "light" vehicle, add a big V8 and suspension, and use it to go fast. The problem is that this all seems a little bit silly to me when done with a pickup truck. By design, pickup trucks are not meant for performance driving - they are big, heavy, have clumsy suspensions, and feel very out of place on any kind of racetrack.
    This Lightning begs to differ. The guys at SVT took a 351 Windsor motor, added GT40-style heads, a big cam, tuned intake runners, headers, and stainless exhaust. And quite unlike Chevy and their 454SS of the same vintage, Ford didn't stop with the engine - they dropped the car 2.5 inches, added big front and rear sway bars, performance shocks, and big (at the time) 17 inch rims with performance tires. It not only accelerated as quickly as the same year Mustang GT, it also handled as well, which is a testament to the thoroughness of engineering that went in to this truck.
    The 1st generation Lightning is increasingly collectible - only 11K of them were made, while at the same time there were about 1.5 million F150s produced. Many did not survive, and pristine examples aren't that easy to come by. With a renewed interest in collectible trucks, these trucks are well positioned to accrue in value in the future, and remain affordable today.

    My first truck was a 2002 ford lightning. I traded it later in 07 for a F150 S331 Saleen truck. You may think there silly. But I loved having a truck that was as fast as most sport cars of their time. People generally have a shocked look on their face seeing a truck that size outrun their Honda “vtech” or Mustang Gt. And it wasn’t like when I had these vehicles. They were my only vehicles. I still had a 4x4 or awd vehicle. But the 2wd sort truck was my love. Never used it as truck. The bed didn’t even get scratched or hauled anything. That duty was for the 4x4. But my asphalt princess was my babies

    I would have to question the horsepower figures. My '93 Lightning had some SVT performance work done by a local Ford Dealership, and I was running the 1/4 mile in mid 11's. Mine was lowered farther than stock, and had the special SVT exhaust that could be unbolted from the headers and slid back. Also had the twin throttle bodies, replacing the factory throttle body. But 6.5mpg was tough on the budget as a driver. God I miss that truck! 😂🤣

    • @dr.lyleevans6915
      @dr.lyleevans6915 Před 3 lety +1

      What all extra did they do to it? Going to 11’s must have taken a lot without forced induction, even with slicks. Nice.
      I have always assumed these were underrated though, and knew they had tons of extra power that would be easily unlocked with a new cam, LT headers, heads, intake manifold, CAI, and increased fuel
