- Although an awesome performance, Elvis' reading of Hoyt Axton's "Never Been to Spain" isn't nearly as popular as his cover versions of "Proud Mary" and "Polk Salad Annie". That's pretty much a shame because what Elvis makes of what in Axton's original version is a pretty simple country song is amazing. He adds a little R & B here and a little (country) rock there, it has something of a big show tune, it's even a little funky. The band is absolutely at the top of its game and probably the best band of the world at that time.
This version here is of course taken from the Golden Globe Award winning rockumentary "Elvis on Tour" (1972) by Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge. Elvis also took it to Madison Square Garden about six weeks later. Together with "Proud Mary" and "Polk Salad Annie" "Never been to Spain" forms what I call the "1972 Trilogy". A group of three contemporary rock songs that prove Elvis to be the greatest single performer of the time. I wish he'd done more stuff like this. - Zábava
One of my favourite songs ever by Three Dog Night, but with all due respect to them, Elvis’ version is the end all! That’s how good he was! Same with ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ He just makes me forget all the other versions! ❤️

Elvis died when I was just a kid. I loved his music, and still do. I still remember where I was when he died. I was in the kitchen, helping my mom dry dishes. I broke down and started crying my eyes out. My mom just bawled her eyes out. She was born in 42, and I was born in 62. Thanks for posting.

I was 16 when the king left us. I came home and my mom was sitting in the living room crying. I listen to Elvis everyday.
It was 2 days before my 5th B-day and i was standing in the living room when my mom burst into tears. She just got off the phone with my grandmother with the news. I asked her why she was crying. She said, “Elvis just died.” I didn’t understand and i had never seen momma cry before. That day will be forever be planted in my memory. The only 2 times I ever saw momma cry. When Elvis died and when Daddy died.
I was 5 when elvis died I didn't know anything at 5. But I knew who elvis was. It came on the one o'clock news and i said to my dad as he walked through the front door dad elvis died. Just proves how famous this guy was and still is.
I remember where I was as well. I was a skater and was skating in a pool, in a house, a few blocks from Weird Al Yankovic lived.

Heard another version on the radio the other day but knew I'd heard a clip of Elvis singing it so I went to look for it and now it's on my favorite Playlist on Spotify. I listened to it on repeat today driving from Pigeon Forge tn to Dandridge..bout 45 minutes..that's a few repeats..all I can say is it makes me happy!! 😊

Of course as most true Elvis fans know, THIS video and version of NBTS was recorded for "Elvis On Tour" in San Antonio in the spring of '72. This is not from the MSG RCA album recorded in June of '72. This is an excellent version of the Three Dog Night classic. It was written by Hoyt Axton, who's mother May Axton wrote...Heartbreak Hotel.
I loved this information.
Hoyt Axton's mother was "Mae" Boren Axton and she co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel with Tommy Durden.

i remember first watching this Documentary Movie at a Local Outdoor Drive In Theater in the Summer 1973. Among my favorite Documentary Movie i ever saw along with the 1969 Woodstock Movie Documentary from 1970.
Elvis had a connection with Hoyt Axton, his mother cowrote "Heartbreak Hotel," another big hit for The King.

Song was written by Hoyt Axton. His wife wrote another Elvis hit, "Heartbreak Hotel." Axton, who was born in Oklahoma (not Arizona), was the man who bought home Gizmo in the movie "Gremlins." He wrote also "The Pusher," performed by Steppenwolf and featured in the movie "Easy Rider." Unfortunately, Axton at one time had a drug problem.
I thought Hoyt's mom wrote "Heartbreak Hotel."
It was his mother. I also read she’s the one who introduced Elvis to Colonel Parker
