Have you reacted to The Mission: Children album yet? Another great album from 1986
Chameleons songs can suddenly slip to an unexpected riff, bridge that brings a new perspective to it. And indeed, it always comes at the right moment.
Saw them in Manchester in December... awesome
They're like songs within songs.
God the sheer majesty of The Chameleons is just uncanny for me…. The magic and deliberate urgency of Mark’s vocal delivery propels these strong melodies with so much hope and security. They are on so much of a higher plain along with other brilliant 80s bands like The Sound, Talk Talk and The Cure
I know exactly what you mean about The Chameleons. Their songs have this way of building to a climax that is immensely cathartic.
Dave Fieldings and Reg Smithies, the guitarists of the Chameleons were the major songwriters along with Mark Burgess.
Mark Burgess wrote the lyrics but wasn't the principal songwriter. The band jammed out the songs and many came out of riffs from the two guitarists. All four were credited on their songs, which is pretty rare as not many bands share equal writing credits. To me they were the best band to come out of England.
I agree that Mark Burgess has a great vocal delivery. He gets his emotions across to the listener with such ease, whether it's about describing the beauty of something or his frustration with the world.
I did a cursory look through the comments and did not see anyone say this so here goes, it's not bacon eyes it's vacant eyes. I am not telling you for the sake of pillory but because it was what I also thought throughout out the song's life until 2010.
I had the good fortune to play in a Chameleons band called second skin with both Mark and John on a mini tour. After playing the 02 in London we were sat down, Mark, his girlfriend and I, in amongst the idle chat I remarked at what a clever and cool use of a words to depict being tired and stressed, he was confused and I said bacon eyes, he absolutely fell apart in hysterics, a treasured memory, he signed his novel, View from a Hill for me and made mention of the bacon eyes laugh we had. ❤
Like deployed 👍
Damn this song always reminds me of my youth. Somewhere in the mid 90s, late at the goth club, smoke machine, disco ball dancing my angst out. Clove cigarettes in the air plus 🍺 Those were the days.
The intro was long enough that you could finish your drink or smoke and get out to the dance floor in plenty of time!
@@rydelldownward7808 haha! Trust me that was my goal before the lyrics came on.
Are you from LA? Helter Skelter, Stigmata, Perversion? Those were the goth clubs where I first heard this song and fell in love with it. Mid 90’s too.
Wigan Pier for me, circa 1994. Great memories.
So many nights at Jilly's
The brilliant thing about the Chameleons is the 2 different guitarists, one is more traditionally based while the other one is more experimental and sort of dream-poppy. When you listen to One Flesh you will get what I mean. One guitarist is playing the meaty distorted riffs while the other guitarist is still playing clean chorused guitar over top of it. During the breakdown, the one guitarist is doing a bit of clean palm muting while the other guitarist has taken to the forefront with the delayed chorused arpeggios. That is one of the secrets of the band. Add in Mark's post-punk bass and the fluid drums that can flip effortlessly from 4 on the floor basic beats to tom based beats that match the suspense of the music perfectly... they are just wonderful.
DON'T FALL!!!! don't fall!! d'f!!!!!!!!
one of the best openers on ANY album.....
DON’T FALL MY FRIEND THIS NIGHTMARE NEVER ENDS
View From A Hill - one of the best closers on ANY album.
The chameleons are such an amazing band. It's a shame they never got as popular or the same level of recognition as other post punk bands, but I'm happy that they are starting to get the recognition they deserve. An underrated gem of a band.
This band is one of the best to come out of England. Such a vital energy and unique sound. I recommend Up the Down Escalator from Script of the Bridge, Singing Rule Britannia and One Flesh from the What does anything mean basically album. You'll be hooked. :)
One Flesh is SO GOOD.
Check Soul in Isolation by Chameleons
Had the pleasure and privilege of seeing The Chameleons live in Atlanta back in 2002 at the now defunct Echo Lounge. Also had a chance to chat with Birdie after the gig. He's the lead guitarist and designs the album cover art.
Birdy is Mark Burgess the bassist and singer. Reg Smithies is rhythm guitarist and did all the sleeve art.
Gonna see Birdy , Reg and the boys in Philly on 8/8, playing entire Strange Times LP!
Awesome! Would love to see Swamp Thing and Time live.
The boys from Middleton sure could write a tune or two , bless em .
Singing Rule Britannia (While the Walls Close in) and Tears are another two good songs by these.
Well know song among 80’s post punk fans. Good analysis, jangly guitar and the great bass line, then the heavier guitar kicks in. Classic track.
This is one of my top five favorite songs.
The script of the bridge needs reviewing in FULL.
I have it signed by 2 members.
such a shame they never got big in the US, an amazing band! They still tour (well, Mark Burgess and Reg Smithies do), saw them a couple of months ago! Go see em live when they come to your neck of the woods!!
This track made me fall inlove with the band, I soon discovered each album is a gem. You are for sure right that The Smiths, Banshees etc over shadowed them at the time. Subscribed, great reaction. My fav track is Nostalgia.
Enjoyed that, thanks Alex - would be well worth an album reaction to any of theirs, Script of the Bridge, What does Anything Mean? Basically and Strange Times, plus later stuff - Why Call it Anything.....personally a very influential band with some of the most beautiful, intricate yet driving melodies, bass and rhythms....lyrically excellent and Burgess' vocals and delivery underrated to my mind......real passionate tapestries........the single Tears is in acoustic form on Strange Times (many acoustic/semi acoustic versions of their songs on a lot of later releases) but have to recommend the electric single version on the second disk of the album along with Paradiso on the same disk......I think the more you listen to the band they'll really grow further on you, whatever blend they pulled together is unmistakably them and the albums or long listen very deserving....brilliant live too and was lucky to catch them 8 years back in Dublin (billed as The Chameleons but likely closer to Chameleons Vox with Mark and other members rather than the original line up).....Mark a lovely guy, chatty and quite self deprecating humour-wise ....very funny....still packing a real punch live though.
Thank you for giving recognition to this criminally unknown band. They are unique as you mentioned, listen to them daily.
"Swamp Thing?" The moment during the intro when the drum beat starts is one of the few non-metal songs that I will do slow head banging.
This song hits my happy spot because I love The Cure.
Me encanta la intro de Swamp Thing, aguante The Chameleons! 🔥
Aguante The Chameleons!
Es genial
Check out for Don't Fall and View From a Hill, are my favourites from TC
Great songs.
Fantastic band. Here in Canada, they released their albums under the name of The Chameleons U.K. Script of the Bridge is the one to react to. Great album. IMO, as good as Desintegration from The Cure.
Chameleons just the best.
It's like having Joy Division, The Cure and The Smiths rolled up into a little ball.
You should check out "The Sound " brilliant band. Imo the sound and the Chameleons are the best bands from the UK
I've done a Sound track, actually!
czcams.com/video/8dBjoGrg2Ps/video.html
I chat to Mark Burgess of The Chameleons occasionally.. nice bloke. Was going to see him them in January but then put back to May! NOW put back to December?! becoming a farce!
Bloody COVID 4 ya!
The Chameleons are magic
I feel I became addicted to that album ("Strange Times") after I broke the previous one with Joy Division :) In my opinion f.e. Unknown Pleasures had that cold, industrial feeling, which in my opinion, was the goal of the editors, but The Chameleons songs give more warm vibe, despite describing existential dread and darker side of the human experience.
Swamp Thing is one of their best songs, in my mind. Soul in Isolation is right there with it. I personally like Strange Times more than Script of the Bridge, so sue me. Really bummed that it has disappeared from Spotify, all of my CDs are packed up and mostly inaccessible. :( Honestly, I love most of their stuff. They seem to have songs in tiers, some are totally S tier, A tier, but nothing goes below C tier for sure. Well... there is Why Call It Anything...
Man the ending to this song is amazing.
Looking forward to the full albums :)
Don't think anyone else has reacted to them either....
@@branchleader73 Would love to hear them all reacted too, fantastic stuff
@@dr.zacking2097 Defo, except maybe the last one - that would totally kill the vibe
Script of the bridge in FULL needs to be DONE. Their debut album and best of the lot.
@@thesound-chameleonman3580 All of the original 3 are increds (In Shreds!) IMO
One of the most underrated bands to come out of England 🏴 Going to see them Manchester England 🏴 Dec 23
You mean the 15 & 16 December? That's when their residency is this Christmas.
I always thought u will love this band
Great song, this intro is brilliant
Just noticed you have JAMES on your list coming up soon. Very surprised but in a good way. Great band.
The live version of Ring the Bells from the Alternative NRG compilation is fantastic.
Another great band!
I prefer James's 80s music more than the later stuff. Hymn From a Village...best song ever ;)
for me it's the intertwining guitars, especially in Up The Down Escalator, As High As You Can Go or Perfume Garden. a wall of sound yes, but the most delicate one
Nobody's mentioned
"In Shreds" 😮
czcams.com/video/IvmLHFiQfgg/video.html
If you haven't listened to Sad Lovers and Giants they are another great post punk band as well with amazing bass lines
I've done a couple songs on the channel, if you wanna check 'em out!
@@AlexHaitz yes!! Great channel btw my dude
@@Slothretro Thanks!
Always loved this song. Probably their best song imo
Classic album ❤️
love this song so much
Timing, Perfection, & Bliss - Try to find the album 'Ascension'.! I Think you'll like it also...Enjoy!
Great track
Lol @ the lactose intolerant thing. I feel ya.
Another class Manchester band.
Not sure if the term Post-Punk is as meaningful as you think it is. I think It refers to bands from the early 80s and forth that started incorporating electronic elements to their sound, but it's not a cohesive movement. Sometimes the only thing in common amongst bands considered as such is the period of time they were making music.
At least it's more meaningful than "new wave".
by a book called Star Rover by Jack
They have much better song's than Swamp Thing, it's not a bad song.. but songs on Script of the bridge are WAY stronger.. Don't fall, Up the down escalator, A person isn't safe anywhere these days... all incredible tracks.. Nathan's phase is a great song worth reacting to as well also by The Chameleons.
Swamp Thing stands up against anything the band ever did. TSOTB is probably a better album overall.
Did he despise the Smiths at 2:05?
Godspeed? Try some Godflesh. Try Street Cleaner album 1st.
Chameleons wouldn't like being labelled as they change their colours.
‘Vacant’ eyes.
I know. I mean, 'bacon'?!
🤩
That was a good reaction to a great song, but it’s ‘Vacant’, not “Bacon” eyes 😂. You Americans… 🤣🤣🤣
Just a joke!
This is my favorite Chameleons track I’ve heard thus far. Will be doing their albums on the channel in the coming months!
@@AlexHaitz To be fair, it does sound like he says bacon ☺️
Welcome to Manchester’s music. I look forward to hearing what you think of more of their stuff as they are a great band. Only recently saw them at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool in December last year.
On a side note, you should check out New Jersey born, honorary Mancunian, BC Camplight. His latest album “Last Rotation of Earth” is doing rather well here. I believe he’s mostly unknown in his home country but he’s currently going down a storm here 👍
Hah, someone upvoted my suggestions and now my suggestions are no longer "coming up".
What’s your Reddit username?
@@AlexHaitz mrkite77. It's the one where the first recommendation is Johnathan Bree.
@@misterkite I should probably just make a text archive of each thread so I don’t get lost with posts jumping around.
vacant eyes..... haha
BTW - Dave Fielding to my knowledge wrote most of the music.... Mark wrote the vocals.
The lyrics, not the 'vocals'.
Please do Slowdive - Machine Gun
I've already heard Souvlaki and their more recent self-titled.
I'm planning on doing Just for a Day and Pygmalion on the channel though.
The 2 lead guitarist make the band. The others are expendable IMHO.
