  • Karakuri puppets, or in Japanese Karakuri Ningyō (からくり人形) are traditional Japanese mechanized automate wonders made originally from the 17th and up to 19th century. Where the word Karakuri stands for “trick” or “mechanisms” in Japanese, these incredible automata were only designed for pure entertainment. Entirely built in wood and powered by weights of by wound springs where each actions of our little puppet are controlled by a set of cams and levers.
All in all three main types of Karakuri exist and this depending of where the puppet will be used. The Butai Karakuri or stage karakuri were mainly used in theaters, while the Zashiki Karakuri (video above) were smaller puppets mainly used in homes. And finally the Dashi Karakuri, still used nowadays, are puppets used to perform reenactments of traditional myths and legends used during religious festivals.

It's my first time seeing japanese automata after delwing into the western ones for the past 2 years, my goodness I've never seen such expressive ones before, they're fast and snappy while retaining fluidity. Most western ones often feel static or heavy with stiff joints. I adore the attention put towards each one's head movement it really adds so much humanity.

In my opinion, both automatons are worthy of admiration, but the Western ones, in particular, have moving eyes, which might seem a little creepy to some. However, I find this feature fascinating and unique.

They actually developed the understanding of mechanical movement when a Dutch clock came to Japan for the first time.
Honestly I believe that the Japanese were far better as creative engineers.

It is interesting to note, that years ago Toyota developed from the Karakuri Ningyo a system for automated transportation in the industry without the use of electric power. Since then more and more engineers around the world learn from the Karakuri Ningyo and develop new solutions for industrial transportation, called Karakuri Kaizen or simply Karakuri. And there even is an exhibition in Nagoya each year since 1994.
So Karakuri aren't just a piece of art, but also a part of modern industry. From Japan for the world.

Had the chance to see Karakuri Kaizen (Toyota) in action, simply impressive!

I hadn't that chance, but I saw Karakuri Kaizen in Germany at the Hannover Messe (Hanover Exhibition).
As I work as an engineer and love Japan and Japanese engineering, I love the idea to move heavy things around without using electric or fossile power.

It's so fascinating to watch the movement. The mechanisms to create an end "action" are incredible on their own, but that eerie smoothness and rapid shifting motion are just so surreal and entertaining to watch. It's really the beginning of the idea of "robotic" movements like you might see on TV, and you absolutely tell why it was later incorporated into modern dancing styles.
