    Hold on. I don't know how it works in the whole country (Portugal), but the bread and butter in restaurants IN THE NORTH will only be paid if you consume them. So, if the waiter brings those to the table, and you're not up to it, just don't touch them. They will get it back before serving you your order. Check ur receipts after at the end. If they mention the bread (starters) just say "I didn't touch them". Have a nice time in Portugal :D

    @MrCataklinsman Před rokem +15

    So, lets start the list:
    1- You do pay for everithing you eat, in Portugal. Don't wanna pay for it, just send it back. People are paid to make bread and grow olives, why wouldn't you pay for those things? Still, it beats the percentual tip that you are obligated to pay in US, so... I don't think that the food in Portugal is too expensive for tourists. Every country in Europe pays better than Portugal and americans earn even more money. You can eat a full meal for about 15€/16$ ( bread, olives, chesse, soup, steak, fries, rice, salad, coffe, dessert and a shot of wiskey ) in many restaurants. It's quite cheap, actually...
    2- The typical restaurants, with typical portuguese food, have labor schedules. The waiters, the chefs, etc ( all the staff, realy ), are payed by the hours they work. If the restaurant is open all day long, they will work much more hours, will get payed better, but the food won't be so good. Wanna eat all day long, like good americans, go to MacDonalds...
    3- BullFights, or "touradas", are an ancient portuguese tradition. I, as a portuguese, don't enjoy it... but hey, to each its own. There have been some associations of animal rights trying to finish the tradition ( because of the bull's suffering ), but traditions like this one are hard to end. The "litlle elf guys" ( "forcados" ) are just a bunch of crazy guys that like to get beaten by the bull. I, personally, don't understand why would someone stand in front of a raging bull, knowing that it can go up to 2200pounds and a height of 5.10...
    4- About the smoking... Portugal is a poor country, today. Back in the old days, it was a poor and uneducated country. People didn't know that smoking causes cancer, so a lot of people just smoked because... they were alone, in the wild, guarding sheeps... Nowadays, the old ones are getting more sense, while the young ones (even if they don't guard sheeps in the wild) just smoke because its "cool" ( let's see how cool they'll be in the furure, with a hole in theyre throat... ). Still, I don't think that portuguese people smokes more than french, spanish or american people...
    5- I never understood the level of "quality" of the hotel rooms that some people demand... I mean, I use the room to sleep, as longe as the room has a bed and a bathroom, its clean, with no bugs and no noise, it's fine by me. I used to work in a 5 star hotel in Portugal ( www.conventodoespinheiro.com/ ), where a room can cost more than 250€/night. But it is a 5 star hotel, with pools, spa, wine experiences and all that shit. But you can book a room, outside Lisbon, in lots of hotels for less than 50€/night. It will be just a clean room, with a bed and a bathroom, for you to rest, but isn't the goal of traveling... seeing things, mountains, monuments, etc? Or people travel to sleep in hotel rooms?
    6- Portuguese people value time like if it is money. We work all week ( in most cases, more than 8h/day ), so when we're not working, we like to sit down and eat or drink or both. Fast-food restaurants do exist in Portugal, and the school kids use them a lot, but most working people values the time that we spend at the table, with family or friends. I can tell you, and I shit you not, that I go to a MacDonalds 4/5 times a year, BurgerKing once a year and I never set foots in a KFC... life is for living and enjoy, not for we to pass running by it!
    7- Yeah, you got that one right... we really are some of the worst drivers in the world. We are improving, people are getting more awareness and more responsibility, but still... not enough. In 2022, almost 500 people died in portuguese roads. You may think that 500 isn't that much, but we are a 10 million people country. So yeah, 500 is a lot... and, you're right again, taxi drivers are the worst. Everybody stops for you at a crosswalk but, if you're on the road, GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!!!!
    8- Most of the drug dealers that you find on the streets of Lisbon ( or any other big city... ), aren't portuguese. Most of them are foreigners, migrants that came to Portugal to work but now they just wonder around, doing nothing, living off the helps that the portuguese government gives them. Nothing against migrants, as long as they behave and play by the rules of the country that welcomed them.
    9- You find strange to pay for bread and olives and you think hotels are expensive, but then you say Portugal is a cheap vacation site... wich one is it? Portugal is an expensive country, for portuguese people ( and not all portuguese people, we have lots of rich portuguese people that think Portugal is a cheap vacation site to ). For foreign tourists, with a much higher living standard, its cheap as hell...
    10- It's called "calçada portuguesa", it's very beautifull and I don't like it one bit. It's slipery, it's dangerous and it's hard as fuck. I ride a motorcycle and I live in an acient city, where almost all the street and roads are made of "calçada". It's bad in the summer, worst in the winter. Tourists find it amusing, I find it stupid and a complete missreguard to people's integrity.
    Now, an advice to all tourists coming to Portugal. Visit Lisbon, but don't stay there. Lisbon is a very beautifull city but it is also the portuguese capital and the largest city in the country. It's meant to be expensive. Porto is a lot like Lisbon, but a bit smaller. Visit Porto, but don't stay there. You can find cheaper and nicer hotels in the interior of Portugal. Stay in Braga, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Evora, Beja. The sea side of Portugal is also great, but near the capital, it will be expensive too. Try the Costa Vicentina, Porto Covo, Sines, try the Barlavento Algarvio, Monte Gordo, Vila Real Sto. António, Albufeira. Portugal is a great and cheap vacations destiny, as long that you know where to stay, what to do, where to go.
    Sorry about the long chat and my english...

    Restaurant prices in the USA are much higher than in Portugal. I bet the cost of the "free stuff" will be compensated in the bill. In here the law forces restaurants to put a price on that stuff and they can't charge you if you don't eat it.

  • @joaochainhonunes
    @joaochainhonunes Před 4 měsíci

    Those who don't know the portuguese law, in restaurants you only have to pay for what you order or accept if asked for. If they bring butter, bread, whatever and simply put it on the table, even if you consume it, you don't have to pay for it.
    That's why many restaurants bring those "entradas" only after asking if you want it.
    So, if they bring it without your approval, just say you didn't ordered it. If they say it's for free, then later check the bill. It will be something like "entradas" or "pão".

Some of our 3 stars hotels look like some 4 stars in other countries, and at prices some times as little as 50€ or 60€ / day, and some of our 4 stars are equivalent to some 5 stars as well at a much lower prices. To complement the offer, we have cheaper hostels, boarding houses, motels, RB&Bs, aparthotels as well as country houses, Cottages and Rustic Houses, up to farms and estates.

    In Portugal you only pay a tip if you want. Is voluntary. And IT'S A BIG LIE that you pay more for the bread than for the meal.
    If you want a kitchen open from 10AM to 02PM, go to Mc'Donnals or any american restaurant,
    Tell the people that you have lots of places to eat at any time, here in Portugal. Restaurants are made to work only at an usual meal time.
