D23 was a let down this year because of the Hollywood strikes and general MCU malaise. But we think that for the studio to fix its problems, it needs to look to Agents of Shield as an example. Then it can regain the glory days of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Iron Man.

now it’s no secret that Marvel is having some problems, and today I’m going to explain what those problems are, and offer up a few solutions on how the studio could regain the fans’ trust and enthusiasm. I mena, their D23 presentation this year was just…kind of depressing-but I’ll talk about that more in a bit.
And I’m not going to be talking about a massive reboot, or bringing in the X-men. I’m going to lak about why the key to fixing Marvel on disney plus is actually…agents of shield.
    Doug: That low-rated ABC show?
Yes! Because Agents of shields actually have the key to making Marvel on disney plus work. And as I go through this video, I’m going to talk about the year 2014-because that was a magical year for the MCU, and I think marvel needs to replicate what they were doing 9 years ago to succeed in the future.
Doug: But I don;t get what you're saying. I love marvel..what's wrong with the MCU?
Oh, I still love the MCU. a bad mcu show is still better than most superhero shows out there. But Marvel has seen a pretty steady decline in critical and fan ratings over the years. We talked about why in THIS video, but I’m going to briefly recap now, so we’re aware of all the problems that we need to deal with.
First of all, Marvel began phase 4 dealing with 3 crashes that were not of their making. Disney fired James Gunn, who was set to take on a leadership role, coordinating marvel cosmic projects, and delaying GOTG 3 for years. Then, of course, the pandemic. And worst of all, the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, where we lost a brave wonderful person, who was also the star of Marvel's biggest franchise.
Now those are the very public, visible problems that marvel had to overcome. And I think they did pretty well with those. Gunn was rehired, the pandemic shined a spotlight on disney plus shows, and wakanda forever was a masterful film about grief. But marvel has also had some behind the scenes problem-namely, that during phase 4 former disney ceo bob chapek reportedly pursued marvel and lucasfilm to pump out more content for disneyplus.
This lowered the bar of quality, because so few projects revived the attention, care, and visual effects work they served [clips, bad vfx].
I will say that fromer and now current CEO Bob Iger has pumped the brakes on this pipeline, wanting to make marvel and star wars feel like events again. It would also be great if he would pay his writers and actors a fair wage and let them get back to telling the stories we love.
So, back to Marvel. Phase 4’s mission to make us as content as possible made it impossible to interconnect this universe properly. In fact tomorrow we have a video coming out that I’m really proud of, where we rewrite phase 4 to talk about how we could have altered the entire phase to set up the secret invasion avengers movie, instead of a disney plus series.
So this massive freight train of projects marvel creates is built on the back of something called viz-dev, or visual development. Normally, a filmmaker writes a screenplay, then they storyboard the movie, create animatics, and film-and while filming is happening, effects teams get to work on the visual effects. But visual effects take so long to create, that marvel essentially skips a couple steps. They imagine their visual effects sequences first, then build the screenplay around them.
    Doug: LikeJohn woo?
Yes, like john woo, who writes screenplays around white doves he wants to include in his movies. The problem is that sometimes the screenplay evolves sina different way. Like they had to reiterate the last act of iron man to add in the icing problem [clip]. And there are other movies with kind of clunky third acts that just didn;t work with the story being told. Like how Shang Chi's father-son conflict was resolved by demon sucking dragoons. Oir how a ground spy thriller like black Widow ended with a sky ship falling.

I miss that weekend of Agents of Shield/Captain America. It was magic. Disney's created wonderful stories since, sometimes amazing (falcon & winter soldier 1st ep arial fight, loki's Richard Grant, guardians 3's heart She-Hulk's 4th wall), (not to mention Andor and maaaayybe Ahsoka?), but the magic of the interplay between the weekly little screen show and the big screen event was important. Hope they can pull off something that special again. Great take, as always.

Ryan makes some great points here. One of the biggest problems with the post credits scenes that we're getting now (thinking of Dr Strange, Thor, even Guardians) is that instead of teasing the next Marvel project, they're teasing what's next for this character, meaning if we ever get a follow-up to this post credit scene, it's not coming for another 4 or 5 years.

      How is that a problem?

    • @ryhanon7
      @ryhanon7 Před 8 měsíci +13

100%. The post-credit scenes are a big problem because they used to build excitement for the next (or near to next) project in line - usually less than a year away. Meaning those threads didn't remain hanging for very long. They also helped bring these characters worlds together so they didn't feel so isolated - they felt part of a bigger whole. Now though, the post-credit scenes don't build excitement as much as they foster frustration because by the time you even get to see what that post-credit scene leads to, you've already forgotten about it. The only post-credit scene since End Game that has actually been followed up on is from No Way Home. None of the rest of them - and there have been 8 others - have resulted in anything yet.

What you also failed to mention is that they did another thing where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the second season did a lead up episodes to Age of Ultron, including how Coulson found out where Loki's Scepter was being held at, and how Coulson and Eric Keonig was working on Theta Protocol, which was the repair of Hilicarrier 64, which Fury used to help the Avengers in Sokovia. We NEED Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in the MCU, they were the continuity that is missing so much in the MCU right now, and who better to assemble a new Avengers team, but S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson and Fury teaming up together again.

    Two things.
#1 Marvel Agents of Shield was an awesome show! I've rewatched it a few times since it first aired. The way they set up the crossover between TV and movie was genius and I've been saying Marvel needs to do more of that for years!
#2 People need to realize that the MCU as we know it is over! They blew their wad and now we're left with what's left. Marvel gave us all the biggest and best story lines and now they're struggling trying to recreate that magic instead of moving in a different direction and just giving us good content. It's going to be difficult to intertwine big story lines like that again. It isn't impossible, but it's highly improbable.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Every movie from Phase 4 should have ended with the reveal of a character we know having been a Skrull all along, and Secret Invasion should have been Nick Fury learning about what we already know and dealing with the ramifications of that. And every Secret Invasion episode should have ended with the reveal of another character (from the upcoming Phase 5 films) being revealed to US to be a Skrull, but still unknown to the other characters and even Nick Fury. It would have given us a reason to give a damn, given us secret information (just like the comics did), and really increased the tension and anticipation for the upcoming movies. Secret Invasion needed to be a multi-film, multi-show story line across several phases. Not a wet fart of a TV show on a streaming service.

I think you may have the movie-making chain of command wrong. Producers are vital in making movies, more so than the directors. The producers acquire the screenplay/script and find the directors to get it all on film. The producers also hire all the set crews, like production designers and so on. They also manage the film’s budget. The director just solicits performances and keeps things together on set with schedules and so forth.
I believe your gripe is actually with the studio execs, not the producers. However, sometimes they’re one and the same, but not often. Often times the director is also one of the producers.

They really do not seem to have a clue how to make stories that have the time to tell them without so much filler they get boring or just bad. I have a general idea that I've had for a while and have been thinking of it more than ever lately.
They need to do this whole thing (Disney+ and feature films that eventually end up on Disney+) like comics. Everyone big should have their own show and they don't have to be 10 episodes. They can be a total of 3 or 4 hours long broken down into episodes of various lengths depending on the style of the show.. Then the only things that are films are team movies (think Guardians or Avengers but like all of them eventually) and major event culminations.
Episodic build up in shows that are all done in their own styles (like comic runs with certain artists and writers) and then the movies are the big Marvel spectacles. Huge battles, dragons, galactic beings and all the action/CGI stuff is on the big screen. But we love it because it's a culmination of all of these various shows that had their own personalities.
Plus, we'd grow to care about the secondary and tertiary characters because they've been spread through the shows and we all know them from so much various exposure. I think it's a way for them and us to have our cake and eat it too.
The first run of Marvel shows had it right. All very different from one another. All based around big characters in the MCU. That should be the formula if they're going to follow one. That's my opinion, at least.

You dropped this today….when I just finished agents of Shield season 1…..because I don’t have any marvel movies to watch……I’ve noticed that Joss Wedon was heavily involved in connection the show to the movies…..AFTER EPISODE 7…..the show is really one of the best projects marvel released before civil war…..I’ve seen it up to the connection to infinity war….and I really do think of Marvel would have connected the shows to the movies there would be so much more hype…if they took more time with the editing and story telling….movies would be better…..and if they paid the actors fair wages…..Chris Evans would have done 6 episodes on returning the infinity stones like we all wanted!!
Thank you so much for this video!!!!

They’ll really have to push out the Multiverse Saga if they want to do more shows and gives us time to enjoy The Fantastic Four, actually have Agatha, Wonder Man shows Armor Wars and Nova films if possible and release Shang-Chi 2 and Eternals 2 if those are really important going forward and hopefully with more time we can get the mutants Spider-Man Midnight Sons and more before Avengers but of course More delays should be necessary to give more quality and of course pay to the writers and animators that deliver these stories and allow directors to have full control over their projects like Werewolf and Vol. 3
There should be more Special Presentations too introducing new characters and world building Werewolf by Night was true quality for a 50 minute special presentation with no filler and jumped right to the point
    Less is always more!

Hawkeye's penultimate and finale episodes also bookended No Way Home's release, giving us Kingpin, Matt Murdock, and Spidey all in a two week period in the same universe. The feeling of that payoff was incredible after years since the Netflix series ended. Marvel needs to keep that feeling not just with good cameos, but with quality writing and the consistency of characterization. Multiverse of Madness was good, but it completely undercut Wanda's growth in Wandavision because Raimi hadn't seen it. That should never happen in the MCU.

The only thing I’m holding on to is that this is the Multiverse Saga, and that we are watching the MCM (Marvel Cinematic Multiverse) in that the characters we have been watching are not on the same Earth. And, everything will connect in Secret Wars, and, in the end,we will all be amazed at the genius of it all where we can do rewatches of different universes.
Probably way too much to hope for, but dum spiro, spero.

I’ve been saying these things since eternals was released. Every project in phases one two and three was somehow interconnected: Nick Fury, Shield… Antman with Shield… doctor strange and thor post credits scene… thanos appearing in gotg and age of ultron… post credits scenes shouldn’t be about new characters that we won’t see until 5 years later. They should be about the movies/shows that are happening at the same time. Marvel should get their shit together or they’re going to have DC’s fate: new good movies such as Blue Beetle being destroyed at the box office because fans have stopped caring.

I had no problem with Ms Marvel or Moon Knight, I think because I already knew a couple of years ago that they were headed for Young Avengers and The Midnight Sons, and I think they hype would have been better if they had gone ahead and announced that, even if they didn't know when. Though I did like piecing together this "knowledge" on my own based upon the gradual build-up of team players... Like I knew Yelena Belova was coming, then Kate Bishop, the Kamala Khan; and Moon Knight and White Vision made me think... "West Coast Avengers?" but then Werewolf By Night introduced THREE new characters critical for the midnight gang, especially with the darker Steven Strange. Oh, and the OBVIOUS Easter egg in She-Hulk of the coming Ghost Rider. Etc. It's just been really fun for me, but I've noticed a lot of other fans not keep up with my enthusiasm because they didn't see the bigger picture. Oh, Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers signs were coming as well long before that announcement was made. Too much Disney Plus, too fast was definitely bad, a lack of clear interconnectivity as well, a lack of more end credits, and the of course Covid upending planned sequential order was the main catastrophe that wasn't helped by Disney just shoving things out willy-nilly without regrouping. (And due to the strikes--effing executives!!!!!--2024 will be a near-total wash. I'm glad it looks like they're resetting all their plans for Secret Wars already and might even GIVE US some more of these other team-ups before getting to Avengers 4 and 5. (They shouldn't be named Avengers anymore but "Marvel Teamups," and Kang the Conquerer and Secret Wars should be Marvel Teamups like 7 and 11, with 4 being Thunderbolts, 5 Young Avengers, 6 Midnight Sons, 8 West Coast Avengers, and 9 X-Men.)

Speaking as a class A disney nerd here, the D23 event held this year was the more minor 'destination d23' which is held bi-annually where in the past has been more of a very nuanced and specific conference to a particular theme for that year.
The big comic-con style event would be the d23 expo which is held every other year. The most recent of which was last year.
d23 has only recently started to try and make destination d23 more like the expo/comic cons but as you have very accurately pointed out, we already have too many of them and disney have created a problem in trying to make this event into another one but has caused there to be confusion into what the event is, (more of a fan centric event and less mainstream) and what it is not.
At past destination d23 events there would always be little minor updates about projects which would have already been announced. Outside of the theme park community these events would never be looked at with any expectation of getting anything new that wasnt already known about.

Ryan, i heard that they don't write anything down in the writer's rooms . that they just gab and talk, and they don't even write down what they say, if they are called "writers" then they should "write" what they are saying in the writer's room and the director and producer should get to read it
