Assassin’s Creed Origins: 7 Years Later…

  • When Assassin’s Creed Unity was released, it almost ruined Ubisoft because it was ridiculed with a lot of technical issues at launch. This led to the unfortunate situation of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate having pretty low sale numbers. In fact, it was one of Ubisoft's lowest selling assassin’s creed games. I believe Rogue was the only game under it. Regardless of what you think about syndicate, it definitely wasn’t a game that was worth having one of the lowest sales numbers. Because of this, Ubisoft took a year off to think about the future of the series. Fast forward 2 years, a new assassin’s creed title was born, and that was Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Assassin's Creed is an open-world, action-adventure, and stealth game franchise published by Ubisoft and developed mainly by its studio Ubisoft Montreal using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives. Created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond, and Corey May, the Assassin's Creed video game series depicts a fictional millennia-old struggle between the Order of Assassins, who fight for peace and free will, and the Knights Templar, who desire peace through order and control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction, and fictional characters intertwined with real-world historical events and historical figures. In most games, players control a historical Assassin while also playing as an Assassin Initiate or someone caught in the Assassin-Templar conflict in the present-day framing story. Considered a spiritual successor to the Prince of Persia series, Assassin's Creed took inspiration from the novel Alamut by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol, based on the historical Hashashin sect of the medieval Middle East.

Origins is the only game from the franchise I had a really hard time letting go. I finished the main part, both DLCs and at the end even the amazing visual tour of Egypt. It was all done so well, attention to detail in both the world and character design was very apparent, and I as well haven't had any issues or bugs, even on my very mid pc. Bayek is the best voiced protagonist of the series by far, and his story and determination really resonated with me. and although some may not agree, I think Origins gave the player much freedom to choose their playstyle, with the skill tree not being linear and having lots of options. I basically played through everything with mostly stealth, bow and arrows and the poison darts, but you can certainly play more "tanky" as well, with the shield stance and various melee weapons. overall it's a great game, glad to see you've enjoyed it as well.

Bro I loved this game!!! I just discovered it this year. This was my 1st time actually playing an AC game. I Didn't think I was actually goin to play it all the way thru though. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll go on gamepass & try something I've never played, plus I'm a huge fan of ancient Egypt...Maaaaaan I'm extremely picky about games but this game has made it into my top 10. Just like u said I had a hard time letting it go. I usually don't like Ubisoft games anyway, alot of times the maps are cluttered. I can't wait to go back & play it again b/c I was learning on the fly. I didn't know anything about the viewpoints u sync with to fast travel or anything. 1 of the things I almost missed out on was the side missions. I usually like playing side missions in other games but Ubisoft map makes it kind of discouraging, but luckily it clicked b4 it was too late. I was praying for side missions when I knew it was coming close to the game being complete.. I did every side mission possible. They all went with the feeling of what & who Bayek was. He was basically a super hero so it felt good to help the people of Egypt...I did all the dlc also...GREAT GAME!!!

Bayek is genuinely one of the greatest protagonists in video game history. Abubaka Salim's voice acting performance for him is phenomenal & utterly breathtaking, he nails the softer moments but is also terrifying during moments of rage. The character of Bayek himself is well written, a man of honour and you really believe his story. You trek across Egypt, taking on enemy after enemy, facing defying odds and not once does it feel forced, Bayek is determined and resolute in his mission. He feels totally natural and genuine in his surroundings of ancient Egypt. There's few protagonists I've genuinely loved, the likes of Niko Bellic, Master Chief, Geralt of Rivia, Ezio Auditore, Arthur Morgan, John Marston come to mind but Bayek of Siwa is right up there with them all. I just hope the next AC will be more like Origins rather than Odyssey and Valhalla.

I have been playing this on and off since 2018 and find myself currently enthralled all over again. I have about 180 hours logged but I beat the main game easily 60 hours in. Once I stopped playing "the game" the world itself absolutely captured me. In that time this game has progressed beyond just another Assassin's Creed into a literal full-blown Egyptian simulator game. I now spend much of my time traveling around by camel taking pictures, and poking my nose into tombs while picking off the last of my uncompleted locations.
Origins is truly special. It belongs in a museum.

The most mind blowing thing about this game is that Ancient Egypt had been going on for thousands of years before the events in the game take place. For example, Djoser died around 2600 BC. He’s been dead for approximately 2,500 years by the time you start the game (43-49 BC)

But the gameplay makes its next level. it had me planning, setting up situations and taking my time to pick my shots and moments. You can’t just mash through some of the fights. I’ve played every game in the franchise. I loved 2, Unity, liked Syndicate and Black Flag. I remember missing Origins and then powering through it as Odyssey was about to launch since I didn’t want to miss a title. At the time, I just tried to get through it as quickly as possible.
However, it wasn’t until finishing both Odyssey and Valhalla when I realized I was still thinking about Origins. I hadn’t realized it had stuck with me and I was constantly thinking about the game and its characters. I now realize it was my favorite title in the series, even though I didn’t figure that out until years after finishing it.
Origins is truly a beautiful game, on all fronts. And while I agree the villain seems shallow and ineffective, I believe the true villain of Origins is guilt, regret, revenge, and the loss of love, family, and trying to mourn in the face of impossible odds. Bayek is the games protagonist and antagonist. He is both our hero, and our villain. We are watching him grow and become stronger, while also watching his warmth and humanity slip away.
I love this game so much; I hope Ubisoft captures that lightning again one day.

I honestly think that was the entire point. There were so many moments where it seemed like we had a good bayek. A medjay. Then all of a sudden when he started to think about his son, he became angry. You can even feel it in his finishers. Bayek was in a battle of becoming what he hated throughout the whole game and that battle ended when he decided that the only way to exact his revenge was to stop it from happening to anyone else. Aya realized this too and so the brotherhood was born.

I really liked this review/revisit fusion. It's a really good video, as a fan, I can hear how passionate, and how much you really do love this game. Even in it's flaws.
I was going to pick at you a little and say, how you gonna say AC has never had underwater exploration and movement this good until Origins, then in the next segment compliment AC:Black Flag on something different. BF had crazy fun underwater exploration,THEN I REMEMBERED, a lot of people had problems with the underwater segments in BF, such as the diving and exploring shipwrecks and stuff like that. It was incredibly difficult compared to any other part of the game. In particular, if you played on the higher difficulties the underwater missions weren't as violent and crazy as the legendary ship battles, but they were some of the hardest Stealth based missions in the game when on hard+.
You done it with the Animus thing too, you commented on how you don't really have to do the modern world segments and just focus on immersing yourself in the core time period. I personally felt like AC:Black Flag incorporated that PERFECTLY. You had your modern day chapters and missions, but very few were required, for the most part, you had to do one mission just to not let your character get out of sync with the storyline. Which was HUGE for me, I had absolutely zero desire to play the entire modern part of the storyline the first playthrough, but I didn't get irritated because it only forced one mission on me and not every other chapter, so I knew I'd be back to singing shanties before long. Same with the "Fleet System" it was soooo cool, new, interesting and I had a blast with it. But I didn't even touch it till I played through the story first. But again, it didn't make me. I was truly in control of my game, which is a really nice feeling.
But as you or anyone can tell, AC: Black Flag is my favorite in the series. So I also get like ahead of myself and will get hype and not realize I overshoot something when talking about it.

If you want to extend and enhance your experience of both Origins and Odyssey try playing Discovery mode in first person mode! You can really appreciate details such as friezes on walls, fur on animals and the stitching on flour bags in close up and don't have to worry about getting eaten by crocodiles!

7:07 i don't know why but the way you said this phrase hit somewhere and something different. Sort of like how we play games to escape reality, by playing games we skip the main story which is actual life to get stuck into the worlds we make up inside ourselves.

Having completed Valhalla and Odyssey in the last year, Mirage last month and Nexus on Wednesday, I had choices tonight... start Fate of Atlantis DLC or replay Black Flag, Unity or Origins. I am glad I did the latter. It is still awe inspiring. It is a brilliant bridge between the older titles and new RPGs. My fav AC along with 2 and b'hood.

I remember when Origins first released (oh, I was so hyped!), my big impression was basically "if Unity was GTA III and Syndicate was Vice City, Origins is San Andreas", and I stand by that. And I mean it as a compliment. A big one. I really like all three of the "RPG" AC games, but I dunno, something about Origins is just magic.
I've never actually COMPLETED Origins, though - finished the story and Hidden Ones DLC story, but didn't do all of the sidequests. Not sure why, as I loved the game. But I've got it lined up after Odyssey in this chronological historical order series playthrough I'm doing, and the good news is that I have a ton of content I've never played before, including the whole Curse of the Pharoahs DLC, waiting for me.

I think the fanbase would be MORE than happy for a Bayek sequel, hes a great character with a great motive and voice actor.
His young son was killed by the order and he went on a journey of revenge until he realised the rot of the order went deeper than his own personal issues with them.
He lives in a great time period for the game with tonnes of potential. He could travel the whole of Asia, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa, setting up hidden ones bases across the area and dismantling the order in those regions, meeting historical figures and helping them or stopping them in their goals and spreading his Medjay ideals.
Ultimately the final game of his story would see him return to egypt for one final "battle" with the order and he would come to rest where we find him in the modern day story arc.
Bayek has potential to be the new Ezio and if Ubisoft would just commit to a character we could have peak AC again with a character players could finally become attached to.

After Origins kindled a spark that sales can validate, I went back and did play all in the series I missed and now were bug free - even the Vita release which was included with AC3 and Connor's game/DLC.

I think they shouldve focused more on Cleopatras turn and centered the end of the story as her and or ceaser leading the order of the ancients. And if not them honestly the crocodile was a much better villian that flavious and i think that wouldve worked better

It's like Ubisoft never listened to what the fans really want. And try harder just for the sake of trying harder, this is the difference of working hard and working smart. They already have good springboards, ac3 combat ,ac unity parkour, ac 2 and orgin storytelling. Combine them and work on making ei better. Don't re invent the wheel.

I feel not enough people talk about the DLC for Origins.
The Hidden Ones felt like a fitting final chapter to Bayek's and Aya's story and the real foundation of the Hidden Ones and their creed. I love the twist with the final boss fight against Gamilat and how he's the only character in the story who accepts his death willingly, realizing his mistake of arming innocents in the end and giving his blessings to the Hidden Ones
Meanwhile The Curse of the Pharaohs just goes completely off the rails. After dabbling with some fantastical elements in the main game like the god boss fights, this DLC has you fighting ghosts of dead pharaohs (resurrected through the Apple of Eden) and visiting simulations of the Egyptian afterlife to put their souls to rest. While it drags on a bit too long IMO it's just pure dumb endgame fun
