Assassin's Creed Origins: 7 Years Later

  • Assassin's Creed Origins was released in October of 2017, making it nearly six years old at the time of this videos release. Assassin's Creed Origins came at a time when Assassin's Creed was on the verge of collapse. After Assassin's Creed Unity and Syndicate, the series was starting to lose a lot of its player base. Many at Ubisoft were worried that people were becoming tired and burnt out of the IP. That is until Assassin's Creed Origins came out and completely refreshed the series. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say Assassin's Creed Origins SAVED Assassin's Creed...

I remember watching my cousin play Assassin's Creed: Rogue when I was 15 years old and I asked him what game it was and he answered "Assassin's Creed", then a few months later I googled the game and the first link that popped was of Assassin's Creed: Origins. I remember being so fascinated by all the screenshots that I wanted to play the game so bad, alas I never had a PC or a console to play it nor would my parents had bought it for me. I still remember thinking to myself "will I play that game before I die..?" fast forward 5 years later I finally had the money and the PC to buy it and remember buying the Gold Edition for full price on Steam since I had the sentiment. I am not gonna lie, I started crying when I finished the game since I never believed I would ever be fortunate to play it. This will be one of those games that will forever be a part of me to death

i had a similar experience. i was always interested in playing AC games but never got around to them. once Origins hit i got the same urge like you, the unquenching need and want to play it simply from how gorgeous it looked. after Odyssey (looking great as well) and then Valhalla came out i said enough is enough and started first with Black Flag (i mean it's pirates after all lol), then Origins and the rest of the trilogy before going back to OG AC1 and replaying the rest in order. Origins has by far the most unique and beautiful setting and music, most memorable protagonist and most touching story and is one of the two AC games (alongside Black Flag of course) i keep going back to replay.

It's as shame that similarly to other Assassins Creed game's that came after the Ezio trilogy we won't be getting a follow up to Bayek's journey, but I love that we got the DLC for Origins and enjoyed playing through ancient Egypt.

While I love Odyssey, I have to agree. The introduction of male and female protagonists to choose which breaks immersion because Ubisoft chooses only one of them as canon, the dialogue choices and fantastical stuff like Hades in Odyssey or Asgard in Valhalla really turned this franchise into anything but Assassin's Creed. Today it doesn't even seem and look like Assassin's Creed. I'm happy that Mirage will give us only one protagonist which is Basim but still dialogue choices do not really fit AC. It doesn't feel like we "relive" a certain life of an Assassin, but more like we alter his life.

I was excited for Origins due to its ancient Egypt setting, but it ended up being one of my least favorite Assassin's games. My main issue is that the Order lacks a clear role and feels disjointed. Unlike in Syndicate, where each target had a purpose, Origins felt aimless. The forced side quests and uneven pacing, especially in the third act, were other drawbacks. The game doesn't attempt to explain its fantasy elements either, unlike Odyssey and Valhalla having them be Isu in origin in one way or another, vs here they were 'a fake vision' and never touched on again.

I've been playing Origins for the past week as my first AC game. I played BG3 ad nauseam for 4 months and needed something else. My usual games are Baldur's Gate, Cyberpunk and The Sims.
I was prepared to be a bit underwhelmed after the titan that is Baldur's Gate 3, especially knowing Origins is 6 years old, but I was left speechless at the environment/exploration and I love playing as Bayek. I absolutely adore the world and the mechanics feel natural.
Something that surprised and impressed me is that you never get dialogue choices and yet it never feels like you are forced into saying things. It's rare for a game to give this little agency without it feeling restraining or frustrating in a way. It's easy to get inside Bayek's head.
Now I am the kind of player that does NOT like needing to get better at things like parkour and stealth in order to complete and enjoy the game. I play to explore, to develop the story, and to do all the side quests, not to improve any skills, and I like it when games make me feel like I am slightly overpowered. I appreciate that the side quests let me choose to be overleveled for the main quest (unpopular opinion in the gaming community, I'm aware).
I don't know if I will replay the game after I finish it, because I don't want to grind levels and do the exact same quests with the exact same dialogue again, but it definitely earned my heart and my praise.

Also for dialing back on things from earlier games there’s not a lot of focus on the Precursor or Isu side. You enter one Isu structure during the main game and the main macguffin is of course a Piece of Eden the final boss wields, but otherwise the historical setting is almost always front and center. The only storyline that dives in to the more science fiction aspect is the Curse of the Pharaohs DLC, and there are side quests in the base game like the Final Fantasy XV tie-in or the messages Bayek unlocks but only Layla hears but those are in the minority of overall content. Even the Apep fight is a drug trip and not an Eden induced hallucination.

Great video. Origins is my favorite of the series too. I think doing this video after all 3 games have been released really helped.
I think Origins was so well recieved because it was one of the first IPs to go the "ACME ONE (1) UBISOFT OPEN WORLD"
There wasn't an obvious formula to spot in every single game yet. We weren't worn out on it yet.
Now even Far Cry has gear scores and enemy/weapon levels 🤮
I was really surprised there wasn't a Parrot or some cobbled drone for spotting and tagging in Far Cry 6 cus thats an Ubisoft trope now.
Though... funny enough, that mechanic first showed up in Far Cry Primal.... and then was never in the series again.
Anyways... the environment of Origins is the best of the series. There isn't much in media about Ancient Egyptian daily life and common people. We have seen Rome, Greece and the Middle Ages 1000 times.
I loved being able to have a little boat. And being able to visit historically relevant places was really cool.

Pretty much agree with everything you said in the video. Although not a technically perfect game, the world felt alive and lived in, characters had complex personalities. This story hit differently than the rest. One of my all time favourite single player games, along with Ghost of Tsushima. I still can't believe Ubisoft missed such an obvious and huge opportunity to expand on this story, this world. Great video mate!

Personally I'm just glad that for people that didn't like the orginal series or the unity/syndicate style can enjoy such a wonderful game/ concept that is 'Assassins Creed!' I will always love the idea of being a hidden blade, one man army, free running through the city/jungle/forest while exploring the beautiful and tragic history of humanity... (also we should have like a "This is the way" type thing for AC' players but idk)
    have a good day.

I only used the fast travel when I was in a hurry, or didn’t want to deal with riding The False Camel.

    Tip about smoke bombs!!!
You can *always* dodge. Even when not in combat
Which means you can always use smoke bombs
For example, if you Dodge against a wall, drop a smoke, and shoot a guard through the smoke, They won't react to it and won't see you. You can cover yourself while throwing sleep darts and other ammo. You can also use it to keep them from detecting you, if you see your bar getting too high, dodge and drop a smoke. Again, you can use it literally whenever you want, so you can drop smokes for almost anything.

i only really have several criticisms. i think the formula is great and simple. it's definitely a mold i hope games like cyberpunk and games like call of duty already release yearly. the simple formula of parkour, stealth, and the counter/chain kill fight sequences were epic. i think deeper elements of combat are not really existant and they were best realized in the ac2 combat system. i especially think the dps and adrenaline for stealth kills was unfair and a bad system. being able to play any weapon and any skin was better in ac2 when you could take on hoards of enemies with counter and L1 lol. the natural scale of weapons and skill unlocks were really cool when tied to character progression. the skill trees are decent but are not a great singular replacement for progressive mission unlocks (both might score points with critics). i also really think mission parameters were what made the game a 10/10. being able to do many missions or puzzles was so simple and fun with just parkour, stealth, and combat systems. i did love the mercenary mechanic in odyssey but i wish they were more intense with chases, tactical stealth, and other missions objectives. i also think character progression for assassins without an order was uncoordinated and dark. they had so much important dialogue learning the creeds of protecting innocent lives, remaining hidden in combat, and maintaining a public order through the brotherhood. the button map was actually so op the face buttons was awesome and eagle vision was a great addition. other games have used eagle vision like cyberpunk and red dead redemption with other combat options and i think assassins creed could master the hidden blade, smoke bomb, throwing knife combo to dominate even gow and diablo fighter afk games. the hiding places definitely add so much in my opinion and being able to hide in benches hay bales crowds etc makes areas more alive and immersive. i do think that adrenaline would be so cool especially with true ac2-4 stealth gameplay. i think stealth, combat, and parkour would all be phenomenal ways to combo guards out, maybe start a chase sequence, or rig forts. would be so much fun to have c4 orsquads/commands and take out bases of enemies with tactical plans but that would definitely be a huge game. rogue, brotherhood, and online gameplay were some really underrated games with great mechanics. the only other criticism i can think of is action is still slower. we want high octane combos, slides, grabs, hunting spots, interactive cutscenes, explosions, pace. it would be really cool to be sucked into a memory with a silent entry, tactical map, or an eavesdrop mission before you face a tense powder keg of fights and chases and puzzles. it would be so cool to see true ac2 style games in egypt, greece, norway. actually, including epic journeys with immortals and gods creates such a deep storytelling avenue like cultures, skills, narratives, epic enemies, mythical items, and heroic traits.

11:22 After playing through Origins, Odyssey, and now halfway through Valhalla, I just now realized the unforgiving parry in Origins taught me the wrong lesson.
I rarely ever bothered to use it in Origins, instead I just relied on blocking weak attacks and dodging unblockable ones. And it was further reinforced in Odyssey since there were no shields in the game, so I learned to just dodge any and all attacks. Really gives some whiplash in Valhalla tho, since shields are back and parries are easy, but dodging consumes a lot of stamina

I have a question for you. If the follow up to Origins was located in a different time period/location, would people have a better feeling towards the RPG style? For example if instead of Odyssey (430BC and Greece) we got a game like AC: Sacrifice. Based in 1510's Aztec Empire (Spanish Templars vs a budding Brotherhood)?
Because the RPG games weren't bad games. Origins is the only one who follows a hidden one/assassin and I think that distinction separates it from the lack of standing the other 2 protagonists have. And the protagonist is the central thing these games need to get right. Cause-Effect with rationality. Something we lack as a Misthios and Viking

AC origins is probably my second favorite AC game behind Brotherhood. I then played Odyssey and I have such mixed feelings about it. The start of Odyssey to me is very slow. But my main issue with the game or more specifically is the story is one that gets really amazing but then gets dull and then gets amazing again but kinda repeats that back and forth. For the first 3/4th of the game I rarely fast traveled but after the story has that stop and go feeling near the end I found myself just fast traveling more often than not which in Origins I rarely fast traveled at all. But Odyssey’s story as a whole was a solid 7/10 whereas Origins story (for me) never felt slow or dull at any point
