    Today the German Shepherd is known for being an excellent military and police dog. But the breeds roots are in herding. The German Shepherd herds in a style called tending. Because of the lack of fencing and hay bails German farmers had the need to fence in their working sheep, the GSD worked as a living fence. Tending their farmer’s sheep.

    In Germany, German Shepherds are still used for herding sheep. They look a lot like the original German Shepherds back when the breed was created, nothing like modern show lines. They don't just herd, they also protect livestock fiercely. I once went hiking and stumbled upon two old-type German Shepherds working with a herd of sheep, they were not happy about me getting too close and "told" me in no uncertain terms to back off, or else! P.S. The traditional German way of herding you described is still very much alive!

    I love GSDs, and watching do their natural job. I prefer the working lines. I don't like the show breed standards, with the shorter hind legs and rounded back. I like the GSDs that are closer to the original breed standard. GSDs have such a reputation as military/police and guard dogs, many people forget that they are herding dogs first.

      @paulpijnenburg5449 Před 5 lety +9

      The german, belgian and dutch shepherd all descent from the same landrace. They are basically the same breed that got split because of political reasons. They then started selecting dogs that conformed to the new standard. The dutch for example started breeding only their brindle dogs even though they had dogs with the colouring of a gsd or malinois.
      The breed standards have been altered through time which has resulted in the abominiation that is the show version gsd. The breed standard of the dutch shepherd on the other hand has never changed. Which makes it a very healthy breed, just like dutch frisian horses for the same reason.
      Point being that if youre interested in an ‘original gsd’, youll be interested
      In the dutch shepherd dog.

    This helped me to understand the shepherd I had when my daughter was a toddler. She amazed me one day when she started keeping the toddler in the driveway all on her own. She was following her nature. She had been out with us as I let the toddler play. I always dashed to stop the child when she would start to leave the driveway. My dog understood from my behavior and started doing what she naturally saw as her job. I didn't want the child to get into the horrible devil's club plant sprouts that would come up in our clearing. We lived in the WA rain forest at the time. Many years later after I learned a little about commands I had a cardigan corgi who worked with me to herd our 2 cats when they snuck out of the house. She learned come bye, come away and get'em. The last was when she pinned one and held it until I could run pick the cat up. Then we would go after other when the first was put in the house.

    I'd love to train my shepherd with these people. I always wanted to try herding but was never lucky enough to find a sheep farmer/trainer in my area. My shepherd once tracked a sheep herd that escaped its enclosure and was roaming out in the forests. The farmer asked me to try because he was desparate. It was incredible to see, especially since she never worked with sheep before.

    At the dog park today a big Great Dane was trotting straight towards my boy OttO. He dropped to his belly, with his head and ears fully up, and pounced in a play attack right as she got in range. They did this behavior again about a half hour later.

    Excellent video. Most people are unaware of the differences between the kind of herding you see in the British Isles versus the type of herding common in continental Europe. It's a shame that few modern GSD lines are bred in favor of herding and so much emphasis is placed on shutzhund. I'd even argue that the German military Captain who developed the modern breed really was breeding a military/police dog. The dogs he used were mostly of herding stock but from his writings it's pretty clear his focus was on developing a marshall dog. He primarily used three types of landraces, two of which were renown for their herding ability. He did use a type of dog from Thuringia that probably originated as herding dogs but were used mostly as guard dogs when thr breed was originated.

    The skill here is in the trainers to get what you can an use it well on command, my Aussie/border collie with her herding is great for laundry, she also is good now taking things in and letting me know things, she is my service dog, but we are still working on her immature side with her herding instinct, but she is learning, the barking thing has appeared but we just work through it until she figures it out. Due to living in the country and an active family I needed a dog that could handle all that and out of her litter she was the sheepest, not anymore-lol. We changed her nippy side to kissy side and she loves it so she washes down the family lol- my dog is pokey but it works for what I need so we just redirect and have her use her stare, pokey self with kisses to get my attention in alerting. Since she does therapy with me her activity has really improved so much for me and she loves it as we go out 2-3 times a day or work inside, I find the hills and water and snow around really help tire her out too. Great dogs shepherds and collies but not for first time dog owners, which I am not. Fortunately we got my pup from a herding farm that had a lot of family so she is well mannered just really energetic but she is learning to keep that for what is needed, definitely not a dog for a toddler. Love the video.

    I think GSDs have a natural instinct to herd. My family has had German Shepherds for years, and if more than two people come on the walk and one person starts to lag behind, the dog will always start to try and circle around the group to keep us together.

    I am working on getting my farm (takeing longer then intended) looking at what dog breed we will choose. I just cant decided. It's a big decision a big responsibility to the dog, but the dog also has a responsibility to work the farm.

    The experience we have so far is that a Rottweiler is great for big cattle and pigs but they’re too rough in the approach to work with sheep and with poultry you CAN NOT trust them. German shepherds basically do good with cattle, pigs, sheep and even smaller poultry like chickens, ducks, geese and guinea fowl. Both the Rottweiler and the German Shepherd are great to put pressure on foxes and the occasional wolf can also be pushed back, certainly by The Rottweiler(s).
    We never had Border Collies, here in Belgium the Borders are often replaced by Belgian Malinois because they’re just as agile and eager to work but they’re also great guards and they are substantially more decided in the approach against foxes and badgers.

    As far as biting is concerned, there is a much different standard required for sheep than for cattle. Originally, Border Collies didn't have enough for cattle, being bred for sheep. Cattlemen had to turn to Heelers and Kelpies. Today, there are strains of BC's that have plenty of bite for cattle.
