I am having a tough debate between a Rottweiler and a Giant Schnauzer. It'll be a farm dog. Specifically, to guard the homestead portion of the farm since my off-farm job has me away overnight once every three days and even while I'm working the farm, I still may be a few miles away from the family and a 15 minute police response time and no neighbors is less than ideal. Dog would stay inside a few hours in the evening for socialization but largely will be outside protecting the area, doggy door access to a heated shop, but we will be outside a lot so all weather performance is a must. Rotts and Giant Schnauzers both seem like good candidates. Rotts seem more intimidating to an intruder which is a plus but GS may handle heat better since you can cut their hair really short...Also, I know he said they are good with kids but I still just have a slight lingering question about Rotts maybe being a bit nippy with people and forming unhealthy bonds with specific family members and not letting other kids or family members near them.... IDK, I just don't want an incident with cousins or friends coming over.

Your journey sounds much like mine, except I have a working line Border Collie. I do many of the things you have done to attempt to give her the mental and physical exercise she needs and deserves. Best dog ever but takes more effort than any other breed i've had. Racing down the hall and up and down the stairs, sitting at a visitors feet when greeting, playing frizbee and throwing the ball several times a day, etc. I completely understand. Mine is not distructive but she loves life and needs activity all the time. ❤ Not the dog for a casual dog owner! Good luck with Agility, I'm sure you both will love it.

My Brother-in-Law had a Rottie close to 30 years ago, One evening when they went out the dog ate a feather pillow. A couple of years after that, my son stayed over night and she ate his jean jacket (everything but the strip with the buttons). He always brought her to the office where we worked so that she could socialize with people. We all took turns playing with her and taking her outside. Fetch and Tug-O-war were her favorites. I used to play Tug-O-War with her using just two of my fingers curled behind her canine teeth.

If you want a unique canine, a "One of a kind" type dog, a mixed, is the way to go. Healthy, smart, and loyal, are basics of a mixed breed, no matter the make-up (funny how that works, but it does) Then, there are the "Cookie Cutter", basically alike, purebred dogs, complete with health issues, passed along bloodlines. Some can be aloof or even unmanageable, depending upon breeding. Which should you rather have? A pain in the butt, that looks like every other pain in the butt or, a unique animal that appreciates you so much?

I've had Whippets all my very long life. The current one I live with is 6 years old. My longest lived one lived to 18 years old his life was in very good health up until 2 weeks before his death. It was almost like a switch. Most people didn't think he was the age he was. My Veterinarian kept saying it's like he didn't have an aging process, but as we all know, none of us live forever. I was so lucky to have my sweet boy as long as I did and as healthy as he stayed till the end. Whippets steal your heart and keep it forever. ❤ They absolutely are mischievous puppies, but I've always used a light long leash attached to me when they are pups, and I found it was the greatest tool to teach them how to be civilized. They are so easy to teach because all they want is to please you and always be in your good graces. All 22 of them. One is enough for me now at my age. In the past, I always had 2 to 4 at a time. 22 of them over the years and loved every moment with them and still do.❤

Great dog but, not fair to neighbors in an HOA type development. These dogs need lots of space. Their constant barking is loud, deep and can be heard far away and through the walls of a neighbors house. It is terrible to keep this dog in a small space and they don't like hot climate either. Excellent for the application of this owner that made the video. These dogs are great but, need to live in a way that fulfills their instincts.
