    You should have a small solar panel of the roof of the chicken coup so you can keep the battery for the door charged and maybe get a water heater to keep their water from freezing in winter.

    A good lock for your coop is one of those latches with holes for a padlock but instead you use a carabiner. Also, I would for sure hang netting above the coop. Birds like haws are really good in flying, spotting and killing through trees.

    Used your design. We are super happy with it.
    A few mods…Texas, not as cold, we put in a wire mesh floor, spray to clean out, no hay. And an egg collector, slanted floor attached to the laying boxes.
    Thanks for all the camera coverage on your video!

      If only that were true. I have a goose in my flock; yesterday I lost a duckling and gosling to a predator attack in the run. I have no idea what could've done it, but the necks were shredded and they were eviscerated.

    Electric current contracts muscles. Test electric fences with the BACK of your hand, (or a tester). By using the back of your hands/fingers, the shock will throw your fingers away from the current instead of grabbing and wrapping your hands around the wires.

    Nice work. Fairly cheap and easy to build.
    The lower side of your roof is at a very dangerous level.
    Recommendation: You may want to, using metal sheets, round the roof corners and put a small piece of foam on it. An injury to the face is far worse to deal with.

    Hawks and eagles will still be able to fly in and get to the chickens. Even full grown ones. Seen chicken runs in thicker wooded area and the birds still got in freaquently. Id honestly recommend a netting that can hang over the run in the trees. The birds have great eye sight and usually see the netting, but every great once in awhile, one may get caught in the netting and need rescuing.

    • @wendybarnes4930
      @wendybarnes4930 Před 11 měsíci +1

      As a falconer and chicken lover, this net idea is great. For safe removal of a bird of prey caught in the mesh, take care not to be “footed” during the rescue, their talons are lightning fast. First cover the bird’s head a towel or equivalent so they can’t see you, this will help calm them.

    Interesting set up. Looks great and Very functional. I'm not much of a egg person, so don't raise chickens, but if I built a chicken coup I'd keep both sides of the roof above my head level because I'd end up some day stupidly whacking my head on the lower end. I'd build a A frame type of roof so I could gather eggs in peace away from wind driven rain and not have to stand in any snow...I'd build a 6' fence around the chicken area and utilize chicken netting over the top. Lastlly I'd definitely build the chicken boxes on a slope so the eggs would gently roll to the back for easy and clean collection. I still remember poopy eggs from the chickens my parents raised on the farm. :)

    I really like how reasonable and smart you are. Today that is a rarity, especially for Western people. For example, firstly, you realistically say that cats are predators and should be kept away from chickens. Second, instead of philosophizing, you realistically say that you should simply take breeds that live in colder conditions... Respect

    Your weather is similar to ours - are you not worried about the eggs freezing with the exterior nest box? I'm planning my coop for a little storage area attached and access the nesting box from there so it's a little better protected from the wind/snow/cold. This past winter we went 5 months without the temps getting out of the low 20s.

    I would imagine keeping it that high helps keep down on the rodents as well. Chickens dont actually have a sphincter like mammals so they will poop in their sleep. They have no way to control it so dont get too frustrated if your still having a lot of poo in the coop. Miss you guys.

    This is really a great looking and very useable coop. However, the plans (if you purchase them) are not very good unfortunately. You have to either be an engineer or (and I grew up building homes and built the home I live in now) you have to keep going back and forth looking at pictures to figure out dimensions. If the measurements were added to the current pictures in the plans I bought, it would go so much easier, especially for a first time project builder. A buy list, cut list etc. would really help. The coop is certainly buildable from the plans, I just think it could have been faster and smoother with more details/measurements given.
