  • YOU ARE AWESOME! After sharing how Asics owes me $10,000 from 2017, y'all went to action by commenting on their Instagram pictures. That inspired me to join the movement and we are finally in talks to getting my money! It was all due to y'all bc I probably wouldn't have been so bold if if hadn't of done it first.
    Secondly, went over my budget again this month mostly due to Luke having to go to the hospital again. That pet emergency fund is getting lower and lower by the month but at least we have it in place. Let it be said, be financially prepared for pets. It's no joke.
    Finally. I'll be trying to take over the finances for the household. Lets see how that goes.

    When my husband and I first got married and started to combine our finances, we opened a joint account together - we each contribute part of our income to it and use it for our joint expenses like rent and food. However, we each still have our own personal savings/checking accounts. I like this system because it allows me to retain a measure of independence over my personal finances, savings goals, etc. while still making it easy to work together to pay for what's needed.
    Also, glad you're finally getting paid by Asics!

      ColleenBeaty im currently started this with my bf. We just moved in together two months ago. We both have our own car payments and other bills. We also opened a joint account to pay our share bills. Do u guys contribute a percentage of salary or a set amount from each. My bf makes a little more than me. So I wasn’t sure which one works better and more fair in a long run.

      @@Handbaglvoer the question I was about to ask. I'm thinking that Brian and I would do a percentage. He makes more than me but if it based off a set percentage of each paycheck, than we would be contributing fairly based on what we make.

      Aja Dang yes that’s what my boyfriend and I do, we each deposit a certain amount in our joint account for all household expenses every month, and that debit card is used for basically everything we share (rent, groceries, utilities, cable, internet, vet charges, etc). Then on weekends or date nights one of us usually pays for each other. It’s worked out pretty smoothly and feels fair. We do the same for a our joint savings account for emergency expenses.

    In a past relationship I managed all the finances. He was horrible with money and was the one to suggest it. I did a great job and even with or lower income managed to pay all the bills, build a savings account, and even afford extra purchases like new furniture for our apartment etc. But what I learned from that experience is that even if your partner is happy people will judge. His family and friends, when they found out I managed his pay checks etc, became very judgemental. I began being called controlling and even abusive. I never deprived him of his money in any way yet I people acted like I did. The relationship ended and years later he is in a bad financial place and his family (I have limited contact with them) blames me for ‘stealing his money’ still, even with the proof that he has been unable to better manage his finances without me. 🙄
    The general assumption was that since we lived together but weren’t married we should have 100% separate finances.
    When I married I chose to keep our finances separate for a few reasons (my then husband had control issues with money and I felt I wanted my own account etc). We were married 9 years and the entire time I had my own bank account and income. We separated the finances in that I paid for food and extra household bill outside the basics. He paid the rent and the basic household bills. It worked for us but again I experienced judgement. People who found out thought it was weird we didn’t have a joint account (we technically did but I never used it).
    The assumption was that since we were married we should have shared 100% of our finances and he should have been in charge.
    In the end I find that no matter what you do someone will say something about it -especially when it comes to money. So fuck them all and do what works.

    • @clearlythuydoan
      @clearlythuydoan Před 4 lety +2

      For real. At first, my partner and I when we started living together fell into the mentality of "oh well, since everyone has joint accounts when they're together, maybe we should?" We ended up being lazy and never opened a joint account and throughout that time just ended up realizing that it works well with separate accounts and we will likely do that continuing into a marriage. I get your feelings though. When I told a friend we have entirely separate accounts and just work together they were like "WHOA, I have never heard of that before."

    I have a rule on my channel that I'll film and produce the video, but won't make it live until I'm paid. It sucks that I have to do that, and I've DEFINITELY lost deals because of it but it's insane what we have to do to protect ourselves. I'm lucky because I have a full-time job outside of CZcams and I don't rely on it for money, but I can't imagine being a 100% freelancer and being taken advantage of like that. I'm so proud of you for speaking up, it makes a huge impact in this community!

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  Před 4 lety +24

      wow, good for you. I think I'd definitely lose way too many deals if I demanded a 100% up front, but I think next time I go into the office, I'm going to ask my team if we could do 50% up front and 50% later. That normally happens with the "bigger", long term deals - but should be that way all the time.

    What I did/do with my boyfriend of 5 years that I bought a house with and married 5 years later was to create 3 joint accounts. One savings account for common savings (house) and emergency. One joint checking account to pay for all common expenses. One joint credit card to get the points where you buy all common items (rent, groc, utilities etc.). All of my car expenses, vet bills, hair, beauty and exercise, clothes etc., I deal with from my accounts. Ditto for him. This works great if both people work. You both have the freedom to do what you like with what is remaining but are also looking after the team. We agree how much from each our accounts we move into the savings account and the checking account each month and we visit this twice a year. He does all the bill payments from the joint accounts. If either one of us would get a windfall from a bonus at work, the person that made the additional money would discuss what they wanted to with the extra. Sometimes one of us would need something, like a car but most of the time it would go towards whatever financial goals we had set for us a couple/team for the year.

    When you buy your house I think it’s important to have a legal agreement with your partner about what happens to your property if the partnership dissolves. You could think of it like a prenup, like you don’t plan on needing it, but if you do, it’s so much better to have made a clear agreement before things get complicated

I the same fucked up my finances early in life but quickly got “adulted.” When ready to combine finance with my bf of 15yrs I decided to keep our own accts and open a totally separate one with both our names and only use it for the household bills,groceries, necessities and things like that. So every paycheck each of us would add to that mutual acct keep some on our own acct for savings or whatever. We are still not married and don’t plan on it until maybe 2022 or so. Aja - I think the important thing to be aware of when combining finances if not married is how the law views things if you were to break up or one person were to die. You can get around the law not viewing you as a unit with extra legal documentation and protections (gay people had to do it for years before they could get married). Its just something to be aware of.

I hate it that some of the DR boards were judgmental as what works for some does not work for others and you and Brian seem to have a healthy happy dynamic. My own caution for other women about moving in with their boyfriends stems from the fact that some guys suggest it right away and less experienced women don't realize what a commitment moving in, buying furniture together, sharing pets is whether married or not and it can make breaking out of a bad relationship a lot more complicated.

    My husband and I have 2 separate bank accounts and one shared credit card. All shared expenses are purchased with the card. Then we split the monthly bill 40% / 60% because he makes a little more than me. We split rent that way too. Our own purchases are our own. We are getting ready to buy a house too so we will eventually open a joint bank account for that loan and continue to do a percentage split and start dumping some of our personal savings in for babies. I had exactly the same goal in paying off my debt before getting engaged and married! I wanted to accomplish the goal for myself, by myself. I just paid off my debt at the beginning of April and we didn't start talking about an engagement until the finish line was in sight and I knew exactly where each payment was coming from. We just got engaged in May and it was perfect! I was in the right headspace and felt ready for our next chapter! I can't wait to hear your insights from combining money! We all need to make decisions that are right for us. I've been following your debt free journey from when it began and I can't wait for you to pay off your student loans! Cheering for you!

    Congrats! For the taking over of his, I'd consider maybe doing what I do...each pay cycle, have an "allowance" budget. I take out 180 in cash and that is my independent funds (ie: I can do whatever with, and not worry about the other double checking my purchases). So I can spend or save, depending on needs that bi-weekly cycle. That way the bulk of the funds go for the house/bills/responsibilities and the 180/bi-weekly gives me madmoney for coffee/food/etc. And I don't use my debit for anything other than bills. (and no credit cards either). What I don't spend, goes in a cup and then goes towards insurance/taxes etc. (I live in a somewhat rural area so 180$ is an ok amount here, so you'd need to adjust to your economy. Good luck with everything!!! *highfives!*

    I am so happy for you Aja. I hope that other freelance/whoever needs to watches this video. Also track everything, if you do not have an agent or company helping you manage these contracts and correspondence, track and note every single phone call and email. I think the spreadsheet is a really helpful way to stay organized without additional assistance. Yeah I have also noticed a fair bit of judgement when it comes to finding a suitable career path and compensation as well. I was actually talking to my grandfather and I was telling him how difficult it was to find a job with a living wage. He kind of explained his own path and how he worked as a welder and worked his way up and retired and how that is how its supposed to work. In the process he mentioned a benefit that I've never seen offered for any job I have ever researched. A pension. I actually chuckled a little. He seemed surprised to learn that over the course of time, while he had great job security, other companies were eliminating a lot of benefits that job seekers were forced to accept for survival reasons. We had a great conversation and it gave me some insight into his generation and their expectations.

    Yeah! So excited that you are close to debt free ✊ idea on combining finances - 50/50 split on total shared household expenses if possible, or a ratio 60/40, 70/30 depending if partner is comfortable and financial ok to pay a portion and see how it goes for the first month then review and revise ✌️ its a no brained but it’s better to be honest with partner on how much you can contribute at the moment and work towards a closer 50-50 is always a fair and good healthy balance in relationship. Been doing it for 4 years and works fine. Give and take reasonably

    I used to be a member of those DR Facebook groups, but to be honest... there was SOOO much negativity about everything. The majority of people in those groups are far too close minded, to the point I felt like I joined a cult. There was definitely very little room for individuality, and for the love of god... don't try to have an independent thought. Some people just take this whole thing a little too seriously, and need to understand that everyone's lives are different. Sure, the general outline for the baby steps are a great tool to follow, but there are a lot of people who are successful without tithing, tithing less because they can't afford 15%, or adding a little more to their BS 1 emergency fund because they have a large family, etc. I just think that there needs to be a little more respect for people who don't "stay in line" 100% of the time.

    I’m the CFO of our family too. We just sent our final student loan payment to my husbands moms parent plus loan!!
    We combined finances before marriage where we shared a checking and savings and also had our own. Broke up our paychecks into each account which got kind of nuts also with separate credit card bills.
    Now our paychecks are divided to joint checking and joint savings. That’s it! no need for us to save or spend separately. And best change we made was only using 1 credit card (got him and authorized m card for my cc) and we pay the bill in full every month. We’re able to maximize our money much more this way. You’ve got this!

    Totally with you in not waiting for everything until after marriage. Of course you shouldn’t jump into things early in a relationship, but if the level of commitment is there and you’ve built trust in your relationship, continue to move in whatever direction is comfortable for the both of you. Marriage is just a piece of paper, it changes nothing in a relationship. If you didn’t already put in the work, that piece of paper is worthless.

    • @arthrodea
      @arthrodea Před 4 lety +2

      On a spiritual/emotional level - yes, a piece of paper is not the big deal. On a legal level, the marriage license legally joins two peoples finances together and gives them many benefits (like with social security, and inheritance laws). So they may need to take some extra legal steps to protect each other if they aren't going the marriage route.

    Dogs are very expensive!! And, they’re a commitment. Glad you made that point.
    I remember when I got my rescue dog, I had to stop going out for drinks / brunch / etc. with friends as often because I had to pay for his vet bills, insurance and at times, dog daycare. A suggestion for people who aren’t sure whether they are ready for a LIFETIME commitment to a dog is to try 1) be a foster to a dog in need as they await a forever home 2) donate monthly to your favorite animal charity and/or, save money every month for a year or two until you have built up a fund to cover the dogs costs.
    You don’t give family members away because of financial trouble. You plan in advance so as to avoid the financial trouble. Devastated me that people dump their pets when they become an annoyance.

    I agree with the whole marriage versus living together and the criticism we get...I started managing the house hold before we were married and the one thing I learned is to make sure to include my partner in the decisions I’m making with our finances. There were several times when I would try to go over the budget and he would say I trust you .... but i found that i had to make him pay attention and make sure he understood what I was doing, where things were at, etc. bc when I had to travel for an emergency he had no idea what to do. Anyhow, good luck!!

    Yay For you guys! So excited that you are planning to purchase a home together. My now husband and I bought a home together after 6 months of dating. It was more fiscally responsible for us both to not pay for separate rental homes and we lead very busy lives so we knew it would be helpful to be able to spend more time with each other. We combined our finances and it’s worked out beautifully. I manage them and make a monthly budget. At one point in our relationship I was making more money and supporting him while he went to school. Now he makes more money and is able to help take care of me while I pursue my goals. We have one joint account where all of our money gets pooled into before getting moved to savings, money market, paying bills, etc. But, we each also have our own separate accounts where we get an “allowance” twice a month and can save or spend as we want to. The one tip that I would share is open communication! I know it seems like a no brainer, but it’s really important to communicate about finances on a regular basis. We talk about it regularly, but also make sure to sit down and address it every month- I update him on what’s going on with the budget and we talk about what we want to move into general savings, invest, save for a trip, save for our dogs’ savings account, etc. Anyways I’m so happy and excited for you two on your journey together! ✨

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  Před 4 lety

      is there a percentage you give out as an allowance? Or is it, whatever we have after paying bills, saving towards goals, then it's ours.

    • @julielang632
      @julielang632 Před 4 lety

      It works out to be 20% total/10% each per biweekly income. Our income varies a bit based on bonuses, but if we get a larger influx of income then we expected based on the original monthly budget we end up investing more OR putting more into our dogs’ savings. Two years ago my dog was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and we cleaned out all of our savings in two months. So, to your point save save save for your dogs medical bills because you never know!

    Hey Aja. In my experience combining finances is all about communication. Me and my other half have been together for 7 years now and we actually combined our finances super early in our relationship because that's what worked for us. (So fuck the haters!) Since he is very visual when it comes to finances we keep a shared calendar with goals and expenses as well as a spreadsheet that we both have access to. It makes him feel a part of it and sometimes he will even say hey I saw our goal in two weeks but I think I can surpass it. (I.E. amount extra to make on a paycheck or save out of spending money). Good luck with becoming the house treasurer! You actually inspired me to become more financially goal oriented so thank you so much for the content you make!!!

    So glad you're getting paid from Asics!! So as someone who bought a house with her (ex) BF of 6 years, I definitely understand the backlash the older/more conservative generation has regarding buying a home together before marriage. For us, things ultimately didn't work out and regret not keeping money things with the house very separate to make it clear cut when we split. I wish I would have made a written agreement of how things would be divided or how things would be paid, in case of the chance of us breaking up to protect myself financially because I got screwed over. Buying a house jointly is a business venture, and I should have treated it as such. But hindsight is 20/20 right? Just my input; plan for the worst, hope for the best. :) Good luck and keep kicking ass!
