  • Hi everyone! I'm Aja Dang and the July budget is here. Basically same old, same old. Thankfully I've been really busy over the past month so as long as I get paid on time by those I work with, we won't have a problem. Life of a freelancer.

    Your budget videos always inspire me to honor my own commitment to my finances. Seeing someone else experience setbacks and frustrations while trying to manage a budget keeps me from saying "screw it," when things get tough. I've also had issues with not getting paid for my freelance work. The hours of legwork, communicating with the company, and emotional work dealing with that merits payment itself.

    the late payments and chasing down money has literally made us so stressed the last year. We've had a "buffer," but it's like we are always playing catch up because of late payments. Not to mention the time it takes to chase down payments. Serious downside of what we do. It's helpful to know that I'm not the only one, but it's also so f*ed up because we are expected to turn in things on time etc. I've been wanting to talk about this, but also not sure how. SO THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT!

    I'm so glad I found your channel. I relate to your videos so much. Not being paid as a freelancer is a big part of the reason why I went back to my corporate job a few years ago. I'm trying to transition back to freelancing again. But not being able to pay my bills bc of it made me cry more than once! It's also inspiring how much debt you've paid off and it's helped my resolve to do the same.
    Sidenote: I'm a NYer, but have spent a significant amount of time in LA (several 3 mo stretches + many shorter visits over the span of 20 years) and the two earthquakes I've experienced have been here in NY! It baffles me that I've never felt one in LA!

My work projects have been slow, and I had to take my per diem for a work trip to pay my credit card bill, and use my birthday money as per diem, ugh. I'm also SAG-AFTRA, and have only booked ONE union job in the 7+ years i've been union. I recently auditioned for another one (i'm in a non-LA region now), and i'm hoping I get it, but I still don't qualify for the SAG insurance. It is indeed, a bummer. ✊🏾

What I did was look at it daily (idk if that was a healthy thing) but I was DETERMINED to pay it off. Every extra $$ I received in my paycheck and/or bonuses I would put it towards my debt. I've paid all my debt off and it's been about a year. Don't worry you will achieve your goal. You've made it this far!!!! I know it can be stressful but I love that you are grateful for all your blessings!!!! You are not the only one suffering from debt and trust me when you finally pay it all off you will feel sooo accomplished!!! That's so frustrating Aja-- glad you called out the company because that's not ok (maybe call out the agency too?) Us freelancers and content creators need to talk about this stuff more so no one else has to deal with it. I've been very lucky that I've not dealt with this much. Maybe this is something you already do..? but I only do partnerships with brands who will put down 50% upfront, and I don't do any work before that lands in my bank account. I find that brands/agencies who are able and willing to do that will usually never have a problem with sending the final payment on time. Sorry if this is something you already do :) I'm also lucky that here in the UK there are strict laws against companies who are late on invoices, and after 30 days late payment, the freelancer can start to add a percentage more per day that it's not paid.

    Just as actors have a union. Influencers should form a union-the only way workers have ever gained economic security, quality benefits, and control of their work conditions is by unionizing. I used to work for a nurses union and I’m now a pre-nursing student. Once I graduate I’m going to try to get a job at a union facility the quality of work life is phenomenal.

    • @giannachacon1846
      @giannachacon1846 Před 4 lety

      On that note, companies are increasingly hiring “independent contractors” or any another “non-employee” category to avoid having to pay workers properly or give them benefits. Since, most labor law and worker protections are centered around “employee and employer” relationships. However, labor law is limited and unions have historically worked outside the legal system, which is a good thing. The strength of a union is dependent on the unity of the workers and the workers knowing that the company’s profits wouldn’t exist without their work.

    • @giannachacon1846
      @giannachacon1846 Před 4 lety

      And also yes to #Medicare4All! National Nurses United is the nurses union that has brought this issue to the forefront. Most developed nations have universal healthcare and the U.S. despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world does not. In the US medical debt is one the top financial burdens people face in this country. By tying healthcare insurance to employment it creates an uneven power dynamic between employee and employer. And prevents people for pursuing other things in their life like school or starting business that they would do instead if they didn’t have to worry about paying for healthcare.

      XoXoMandy I’m sorry, but they don’t really owe her anything, legally, if they paid the PR agency. Aja didn’t have a contract with ASICS directly. I used to work at an ad agency, and we would work with production companies all the time who handled the talent. I’ve seen people file against the ad agency when the production company didn’t pay. But the ad agency didn’t owe them anything. I know that sucks, but t that’s how it goes. I hope Aja has a good lawyer.

    Aja love these videos. Lol our loans are twinning, I'm at 30k as well. The deliberate gratitude for the paychecks is something I will adopt. Its easy to get frustrated that my limited income even after side hustles is slowing my debt payoff. I will try to be mindful of this going forward

    Such a strong video I 100% relate right now. I'm going through the same stress beacuse of this inconsistent income. That payment situation is so upsetting to hear and this needs a lot of faith and persistence, that's why I'm not here to tell you that I hope you will get payed, I'm here to wish that the payment that you deserve and WILL arrive to you will be there SOON. Because it's yours, you worked responsibly with a contract, your ripple effects literaly changes financial lives of so many people watching you, me included, for the better. There is so much goodness comming your way because of that. As a freelancer myself, I think we need to take responsibility to not accept this Bad business world for what it is and figure out together through online platforms how to start the conversation and re-evaluate new norms an red lines.I feel that us, this new generation of freelance workers if I may call us that, must not accept these norms the way they are now. Thank you for this powerful video!

    Hi Aja!! Thank you for another Budget video and sharing your financial journey. I would suggest reaching out to the company again as a final warning or letting them know your seeking legal action to get your $10k. I am not sure if you can file small claims with this large of an amount through court, but definitely do more research. I hope you get your money cause that isn't right for any company to do especially when you provided your services and were not compensated for your work. Also if there was a contract signed by both parties they should legally honor and compensate you the amount that is rightfully owed through the terms. Wishing you luck on this situation!
