The Best Clothing Colors for Men | Why You Should Wear Neutral Colors

- The best clothing colors for most men are neutral colors. Buying clothes in a neutral color is a great way for any man - regardless of body type, age, skin tone or style preferences - to build a versatile wardrobe.
Here’s why I love wearing neutral colors and why all of my wardrobe staples are in neutral colors. First off: neutral colors include black, white, any shade of grey, beige/cream and navy.
Even if you only wore these colors, you could be well-dressed and stylish every single day, no matter the occasion. If you throw in a couple more versatile colors, such as olive and light blue, you’ve got a complete wardrobe.
Here’s the best part: if you like other, less standard colors, they will also work with this palette. For example, if you love wearing burgundy or look great in yellow, both of those colors work well on top of a neutral wardrobe. You don’t have to add extra colors, but it’s very easy to do so. Here are some of the benefits of neutral colors:
#1: All Your Clothes Look Good Together
With a neutral wardrobe, putting together an outfit or packing for a trip is a breeze. You can almost get dressed in the dark because everything goes together.
#2: You Can Always Add Color (But you Can’t Remove It)
If you want to be more colorful, you can always add splashes of color to a neutral wardrobe. But if all your clothes are bright and colorful, it’s impossible to remove that color for a more subdued look.
#3: Easy to Control Your Contrast
As a shorter man, I prefer low contrast outfits. In other words, I try to minimize the difference in tone between my top and bottom halves. But that doesn’t mean I always have to wear dark colors, as some style “advice” for shorter men would suggest.
I love wearing light colors, but I want to make sure those outfits are also low contrast. With a neutral wardrobe, this is easy.

Finally someone who has valuable content and not yelling to the camera.
wittosuaff
Or puching bad stuff!
Agree. He is a man of culture and manner.
Who could that be? Haha
tmf
Ahmed Afzal Tmf has good videos, but he’s not such a great person.
Unlike pretty much of style channels nowadays, your channel has not turned itself into a marketing channel and your videos are still pretty rich in content. Thank you for your work Brock, your channel rocks!
Thank you sir 🙏
@@robertjoseph3134 I more ok with ads that skip-able, or short 15 sec then a sponsored segment of 30 sec..
Yeah agreed! One of many reasons I am still subbed to this channel!
@chris patel TMF, Alfa M basically most of them!
As a lover of minimalism and understated elegance, this is like a capsule wardrobe but classy but casual minimalists.
I just wanted to buy a hoodie. Now I feel bad because I don't own a field jacket, chinos, Chelsea boots, dress socks etc. I'm just going with the black hoodie lmao
His voice is perfect, he’s not yelling or clout advertising. 👌🏾
One of the most underrated youtuber
This literally is one of the best mens fashion videos I have ever seen. Thanks Brock. The modest, minimal fashion you provide ideology on is lost in todays society. Where hypebeasts and streetwear has really taken over. I must admit I love streetwear but after watching your videos I have really been able to go out buy a few pieces and add them to a wardrobe that goes from day to night very easily. Which is ideal with my work schedule. Keep up the good work...
The best video you’ve done yet. What separates you from the rest, is that you are humble and, appropriately, modest
This wasn't just great content, but the way that you communicated your message was also effective! It was a great use of pictures and image movement to help us visualize your thoughts. I'd recommend continuing these techniques in your videos.
I'm a woman, all the colourful stuff is in my tops and dresses/one pieces, all bottoms, outerwear and shoes and bags are neutral/black/white which means everything will always match and nothing will clash. If you want to bring colour in and still have a versatile wardrobe, add colour to ONE category of clothing 99% of the time.
The quality, advice and information in this video is super helpful, and its just really well done in general. Thanks again for providing quality content, Brock! Especially the wardrobe example at the end.
Oh, and much respect for not trying to sell me something for 2/3 of the video
P.S. I love the interaction you have with your audience, shows that you care
Thank you for giving a nice layout of a "starter wardrobe". Gives me something to work toward instead of choosing my own haha.
I really agree with his point about low contrast, and in my opinion the lighter that your skin complexion is the most important the low contrast "rule" becomes.
THANK YOU I have been looking for this type of info for 3 days now and your video just filled all my needs, you’re awesome
Your videos are awesome, your advices are very professional but I feel like you're giving casual advice as if we were taking in person. The best fashion blogger in my opinion.
I do my best to maintain a minimal wardrobe that covers all my bases and this, this video gentleman, is gold. Brock, thank you for your contributions.
Well-done! I figured this neutral pallet out when I was around 25. Basically, it’s hard to make two strong colors work in the same outfit (ie purple pants and orange shirt), so neutral colors are the true foundation of any men’s wardrobe.
The more you think about your clothing choices in the beginning, the less you have to think about them when you get dressed (and the better you will look)
Your content is always spot on, and I've been applying it to my everyday life. I've been following you for awhile now and you truly deserve more viewers and subscribers.
Great video. I love the way you tied it in at the end with the visual of different pieces of clothing. Thank you for uploading.
You sir are a genius!! Best advice on styling clothes that I've heard so far so I'm definitely subscribing!
I might be repeating myself. I apologize if I am. But the gray/neutral colors in the world of oil painting are referred to as " the beautiful grays." They are mysterious and they actually change throughout the day as the light changes. Strong color is actually more stationary. If you wear too much strong color, it saturates the retina very quickly forcing the viewer to turn away. Strong color grabs the attention quickly, but then loses it just as quickly.. Guys who try to ' peacock " and draw attention by wearing loads of color can actually create the opposite effect they intended.
As Frank Lucas said, "The loudest guy in the room, is the weakest guy in the room."
Good point, Chairman7w!
Where can i read about this?
You can google the science of color and how it affects the retina of the eye. Strong color is great in small doses. If you look at any great painting in Art, you will see that 80-90% of the canvas is composed of grays....with only small bits of strong intense color. The only images you see that are strong in color are advertisements; they are designed to grab your attention quickly, knowing full well that you will turn away after a second or so. The Pepsi sign is a good example. IF you want to hold a viewers attention, you have to be careful with the amount of strong color you cover yourself with. The grays are really where it's at. Grays, good texture, and fit. A small pop of color is generally best But yeah, Kubensis, google strong color and how it affects they eye....and your brain which is attached to the eye of course by way of the optic nerve. It's fascinating. .
That was really nice to read, great job finding that information, and adopting it, it's impressive.
It reminds me of the watch i want to get to add a small pop of color to my wardrobe, i have mostly all greyscale and navy, but i wanted this -
i.pinimg.com/474x/e9/cd/25/e9cd2578e6b58e3120be6a8eaf760ba2--lizards-seiko.jpg
it's the sheiko serb 033 with a green lizard skin strap. too bad the serb 033 is discontinued.
One of your best videos yet Brock! Keep up the great work!!
One of your best videos to date, I find myself coming back to it quite often and it has definitely helped me out the most in my "style" journey with color blocking. I remember owning nothing but bright colored shirts and like you said very individual pieces when I first started that I'd have so much trouble putting together with my other clothes. It's always good to remind myself of the basics, you're the man Brock!
I've always been a shy person, but, I've always had an affinity for bright, bold colors (common--strange how the mind works). When I look at my friends who dress in more understated neutrals, I think they have such a good look and natural style. Thanks for the video, for spelling it out for me. I'm undergoing a change of style. My wife is already pleased.
Right at the beginning! "neutral colors...any man regardless of age, body type, skin tone or style preferences." In Seventies parlance: right on.
Right on!
Very insightful and great videography and graphics. I admire the work you put into making such high quality videos. You the man, Brock!
The 25 dislikes are from the various channels like tmf, rmrs and alpham that only accepts sponsors
Thanks Brock! A great video and style advice. I’m rebuilding my wardrobe and this is super helpful!
This is one of the best style you tube videos to come put in a long time - even more true from the long time style bloggers.
Well done Brock.
I've been your subscriber for a long while and I really like your closet. You know your colors very well.
Truely,a modest and fashionable man , keep up the great work.
Good advice on color choices; vivid colors have their place in some summer clothing, but are difficult to incorporate into an everyday, all-year wardrobe.
Thanks for this! Will use this as reference when streamlining my wardrobe.
I keep sending these videos to my husband, who started a new position that is more "client facing" than before. Love your style!!
This is great advice ! Love your channel
Awesome vid, great advice, I will be using this for my wardrobe, thank you!
Great video! Really approachable. Definitely subbing. I tend to get all the essentials in black and work from there. Trying to work in some more classic colours, navy and such.
perfect !!
i am half through building my wardrobe like this already
so helpful
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice video man. I just noted a few mistakes I've making with my wardrobe (like the high contrast making me shorter) that I've never even noticed. Great stuff!
Absolutely love this video. Amazing content with lots of information. Not just pushing ur wardrobe across. Really valuable content, even for a woman.
I got one dark blue jeans, one light blue jeans and an olive khaki pants, and for tops I only own white and black.
Thank you, for the low contrast tip.
I'd dare to say this is the best content I've ever come across with regards to men's fashion.....well done padna....we're tuned in all the way from Trinidad
Great video! Thanks for showing the pieces!
I just took copious notes because I desperately need new clothes and want an interchangeable wardrobe. I'm CLUELESS about how to mix and match colors so this was VERY helpful. Thank you!
Great video, learning a lot watching your channel. Keep the hard work, very appreciated
Fantastic video. One of the hardest things for me to learn are color combos. As a larger guy it can be difficult to look good. Plus my wardrobe is all over the place from graphic tees to suits. So I’m trying to consolidate my style away from the tee shirt side of things.
It's an eye opener for me, that makes me more interested to pick neutral colors!! Keep posting helpful videos!!! Bravo!!!
This works well for taller guys too - 6’2” and love your channel! Wearing grey and blue today!
Lacost navy polo and moore boots.
Nice video as usual, you are such high class down to earth.
Thank you! It helps me a lot.
Perfectly corect, thanks!
Burgundy or the dark colors works great with all the neutrals.
Versatility is key, great differenses in neutral colors and materials gets you a lot of chioces.
Thoroughly explained with good examples. Thank you
Wow...just wow man for your presentation, pretty neat and clean, great content.
Great video, Brock. Really informative. Thanks for specific advice in the end
Binge watching right now, motivates me to try to make videos and show people the things turn a man into a gentleman
3:03 a dog will always be the best accessory ever 👌🏻
Absolutely in love with your videos! God bless you Sir! :)
Thanks for the video and tips. I went over by wardrobe pretty comprehensively in the last couple of years. I found that many of the logo or brandings on t shirts, polo's and sweatshirts were not as versatile for me. It was a time where I wanted to show a polo placket's distinct check patter, or a my "going out" and "clubbing" button front shirts where so exagerated in details like printing inside the cuffs and detailed stitches on the collar that I would wear them once and that's it. Now I stick with charcoal, black, white for basics. Chocolate brown, navy, charcoal, olive and burgundy for some color, and I gotta say that most of my clothing goes very well with the other pieces. From casual to smarter fit I do: pocket t, henley, work shirt button front, ocbd, dress shirt. I have each piece in both M and L depending on the fit I want to have will be more relaxed or smarter fit.
I love black, light blue, Navy blue, lavender, olive green, brown, light brown, khaki, grey off white and white.
This is great guide for a minimalist wardrobe. Thanks.
Killing it. Love the video.
wow! great video. the outfit starter kit is clutch!!
Really well made video. Thank you.
That was some really well explained stuff. ❤️👌
Nice Job. Could not agree with you more. Thanks
thanks for making it so easy
Great video! I’m 49 and looking for good style advice, and I really like your channel, style, and method of delivery. Good on you, and a very professional channel indeed.
@2:55 "So if you have a neutral outfit and you want to stand out; you want to add a splash of color. You can do that by adding an accessory."
First thing that comes to mind is the dog in the photo.... curse my fashion sense!
I loled
Excellent, definitely knows what he's talking about. I'm glad I subscribed👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow very, very helpful video! Thank you sir. I'll save it for inspiration purposes 😁
That monochromatic green look is 🔥 🔥 🔥
Awesome teaching of the fundamentals of developing a wardrobe. I've stuck to dark neutrals colours for most of my life (ie: Black and Dark blue). And I've recently branch out, buying yellow chukkas and tan Chinos, and I've been looking for a nice way to complete the upper half. This video helps a lot to help understand the lighter half of the neutral colour palette. Thanks.
Your videos are cool Brock, very innovative, incredibly helpful and you've not succumbed to product marketing gimmicks in every video as of yet, which most other youtubers do and its really annoying sometimes. Keep up the good work mate. All the best.
Great video like always!
This channel is gold!
Great info Brock!
Very unique and helpful video. Thank you!
Great video! Always so informative :)
One of the best videos I have seen in recent years on colour matching. Nothing too technical like some vids which are so hard to understanding matching this and that and ...
Brock , I am speechless!! Fantastic
Great video, completely agree
Really really great video. Thank you very much.
Navy blue for the ultimate suit
Using Neutrals is the best course. It makes shopping a breeze. It makes layering a breeze. It is almost impossible to mess up. When you use them consider the 60:30:10 outfit rule: 60% of your outfit is one color. 30% of your outfit is a supporting color. 10% of your outfit is the highlight color. An example of this rule would could be a Navy Suit supported by a white shirt with a true red color tie.
Brock! This hair length really does suit your face. Looking super sharp!
Good advice, thanks!
It has been amazing to hear it from you sir
This is the one fashion video every guy should watch
Very inspiring brock... keep rockin brock 👏
Your content quality is getting higher through time. Keep creating.
I wear all black when I'm out of school, and when I wear shirts, which is every school day, I put on black pants and a blue or burgundy oxford.
Bro you always upload style vids right before I go shopping :). keep up the amazing work!!
I have a question, in your opinion which suits a black jeans, super washed out light blue jeans and a khaki chino better. A grey or tan chelsea boots? I mostly wear the black jeans, sometimes i go with the chinos and rarely put on the light jeans. Getting new footwear soon need recommendations.
Edit: I also usually go with a white, black or grey T's with a black leather jacket.
very simple and insightful, thanks a ton.
This is a very good tip for newbie like me.
I am not a color wise person. And I am not good with color combination for my wardrobe.
I believe this tip will help me build my foundation wardrobe color.
Thanks brock.
Thanks dude you are a lifesaver! #subbed
That burgundy suit is amazing!
It's September 2021. I just found your channel and thought it's very educational and useful. Subscribed!
Really solid advice, Brock. My fashion sense is a little more on the rock or casual side, but the colour palette advice is equally applicable. It also makes buying new clothes less risky. If I see a pair of navy/grey sneakers I like, I don't have to worry about whether it will fit in with other clothes if I already have jeans, shirts and t-shirts in shades of grey and blue. Same goes for having black, burgundy, olive in your wardrobe.
Exactly! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Cheers Brock godspeed much love.
