The Best Clothing Colors for Men | Why You Should Wear Neutral Colors

  • The best clothing colors for most men are neutral colors. Buying clothes in a neutral color is a great way for any man - regardless of body type, age, skin tone or style preferences - to build a versatile wardrobe.
Here’s why I love wearing neutral colors and why all of my wardrobe staples are in neutral colors. First off: neutral colors include black, white, any shade of grey, beige/cream and navy.
Even if you only wore these colors, you could be well-dressed and stylish every single day, no matter the occasion. If you throw in a couple more versatile colors, such as olive and light blue, you’ve got a complete wardrobe.
Here’s the best part: if you like other, less standard colors, they will also work with this palette. For example, if you love wearing burgundy or look great in yellow, both of those colors work well on top of a neutral wardrobe. You don’t have to add extra colors, but it’s very easy to do so. Here are some of the benefits of neutral colors:
#1: All Your Clothes Look Good Together
With a neutral wardrobe, putting together an outfit or packing for a trip is a breeze. You can almost get dressed in the dark because everything goes together.
#2: You Can Always Add Color (But you Can’t Remove It)
If you want to be more colorful, you can always add splashes of color to a neutral wardrobe. But if all your clothes are bright and colorful, it’s impossible to remove that color for a more subdued look.
#3: Easy to Control Your Contrast
As a shorter man, I prefer low contrast outfits. In other words, I try to minimize the difference in tone between my top and bottom halves. But that doesn’t mean I always have to wear dark colors, as some style “advice” for shorter men would suggest.
I love wearing light colors, but I want to make sure those outfits are also low contrast. With a neutral wardrobe, this is easy.

This literally is one of the best mens fashion videos I have ever seen. Thanks Brock. The modest, minimal fashion you provide ideology on is lost in todays society. Where hypebeasts and streetwear has really taken over. I must admit I love streetwear but after watching your videos I have really been able to go out buy a few pieces and add them to a wardrobe that goes from day to night very easily. Which is ideal with my work schedule. Keep up the good work...

I'm a woman, all the colourful stuff is in my tops and dresses/one pieces, all bottoms, outerwear and shoes and bags are neutral/black/white which means everything will always match and nothing will clash. If you want to bring colour in and still have a versatile wardrobe, add colour to ONE category of clothing 99% of the time.

Well-done! I figured this neutral pallet out when I was around 25. Basically, it’s hard to make two strong colors work in the same outfit (ie purple pants and orange shirt), so neutral colors are the true foundation of any men’s wardrobe.

I might be repeating myself. I apologize if I am. But the gray/neutral colors in the world of oil painting are referred to as " the beautiful grays." They are mysterious and they actually change throughout the day as the light changes. Strong color is actually more stationary. If you wear too much strong color, it saturates the retina very quickly forcing the viewer to turn away. Strong color grabs the attention quickly, but then loses it just as quickly.. Guys who try to ' peacock " and draw attention by wearing loads of color can actually create the opposite effect they intended.

    • @westfieldartworks8188
      @westfieldartworks8188 Před 5 lety +10

You can google the science of color and how it affects the retina of the eye. Strong color is great in small doses. If you look at any great painting in Art, you will see that 80-90% of the canvas is composed of grays....with only small bits of strong intense color. The only images you see that are strong in color are advertisements; they are designed to grab your attention quickly, knowing full well that you will turn away after a second or so. The Pepsi sign is a good example. IF you want to hold a viewers attention, you have to be careful with the amount of strong color you cover yourself with. The grays are really where it's at. Grays, good texture, and fit. A small pop of color is generally best But yeah, Kubensis, google strong color and how it affects they eye....and your brain which is attached to the eye of course by way of the optic nerve. It's fascinating. .

Thanks for the video and tips. I went over by wardrobe pretty comprehensively in the last couple of years. I found that many of the logo or brandings on t shirts, polo's and sweatshirts were not as versatile for me. It was a time where I wanted to show a polo placket's distinct check patter, or a my "going out" and "clubbing" button front shirts where so exagerated in details like printing inside the cuffs and detailed stitches on the collar that I would wear them once and that's it. Now I stick with charcoal, black, white for basics. Chocolate brown, navy, charcoal, olive and burgundy for some color, and I gotta say that most of my clothing goes very well with the other pieces. From casual to smarter fit I do: pocket t, henley, work shirt button front, ocbd, dress shirt. I have each piece in both M and L depending on the fit I want to have will be more relaxed or smarter fit.

Using Neutrals is the best course. It makes shopping a breeze. It makes layering a breeze. It is almost impossible to mess up. When you use them consider the 60:30:10 outfit rule: 60% of your outfit is one color. 30% of your outfit is a supporting color. 10% of your outfit is the highlight color. An example of this rule would could be a Navy Suit supported by a white shirt with a true red color tie.

I have a question, in your opinion which suits a black jeans, super washed out light blue jeans and a khaki chino better. A grey or tan chelsea boots? I mostly wear the black jeans, sometimes i go with the chinos and rarely put on the light jeans. Getting new footwear soon need recommendations.
Edit: I also usually go with a white, black or grey T's with a black leather jacket.

This is a very good tip for newbie like me.
I am not a color wise person. And I am not good with color combination for my wardrobe.
I believe this tip will help me build my foundation wardrobe color.
    Thanks brock.

Really solid advice, Brock. My fashion sense is a little more on the rock or casual side, but the colour palette advice is equally applicable. It also makes buying new clothes less risky. If I see a pair of navy/grey sneakers I like, I don't have to worry about whether it will fit in with other clothes if I already have jeans, shirts and t-shirts in shades of grey and blue. Same goes for having black, burgundy, olive in your wardrobe.
