    Like the real Volvo 480 ES, the Matchbox model never made it to America. It was available in the Rest of World mainline between 1988 and 1990 and also in the short-lived Laser Wheels series before it was discontinued. Its short life span meant there was only one variation with it either having a Volvo decal on the bonnet or not.
    The 480 ES is an intriguing vehicle being the first front-wheel drive Volvo car and their only model to feature pop-up headlights. The pop-up headlights formed part of the design that adhered to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Regulations along with its 5mph bumpers. It was all set for a US release following its 1986 European launch but it was canned in 1988 owing to an unfavourable exchange rate. It was built in the Netherlands and had handling developed by Lotus but it was panned for its reliability and build quality issues. It was in production until 1995.
    My model was a bit messy from play wear but was in prime position for a customisation. I love the look of 480s in their Limited Edition two-tone spec. These 1992 cars were painted green with silver bumpers and lower door trims paired to five spoke alloy wheels. I try to recreate that unique paintwork on my custom using only my rattle cans while teaming it to some excellent Creative One 64 rims.

    Great colour match and wheel choice 👍 Like others have commented, I didn't know a Matchbox version existed!

    The color looks great and the wheels look like the original ones! I am surprised it did not come to the U.S. as I see Volvos on the road from time to time. It is a nice looking design. Thanks for sharing this.

    That turned out so well Jason, the detailing is especially impressive. 👍
    Such a pretty underrated car and quite the departure for Volvo at the time.

    Great custom, great casting, great car - I did my work experience at Volvo in 1991, so I got to experience road tests in the 480, 440 Turbo, 740 Turbo and even a 262. Volvo were pretty much at the top of their game at this point.

    Lovely job. I remember these seemed to have a bad reputation due to electrical issues. The way the seats reclined was interesting at the time, like in a cradle.

    I do wish the model and the real car would have come to the USA. Luckily i spent part of my childhood in the uk and managed to come home with the laser wheel version of the casting. Currently on display in my basement... but sadly those laser wheels didnt keep their shine.
    As far as the real car... im a pretty big fan of volvos, even own a couple.. i also love some of the wedge shaped sporty cars from the 80s... like the Isuzu Impulse (Piazza) and subaru XT... which are all but extinct and impossible to find over here. The 480 really fits right in with those.

  • @nathancook1404
    @nathancook1404 Před 4 měsíci

    It looks Nice, in a Well Detail way, at least you'd tried, the only Volvos I'd remembered seeing as a Kid that was sold in the US was the 240 Sedan & Estate, and the 850 Sedan & Estate and they did later get into making SUVs & Crossover later in the 1990's-2000's, as the Volvo 480, I'd would learn about this Casting after watching Matchbox Garage restore one that was in far worser shape due to the roof being partly squashed in the front.

    Holy shit this one turned out amazing! Didn't know this car even existed, probably because it never sold in the US. But even then, I've heard of plenty normal poor selling cars that never sold here. Must be unloved even by Volvo fans.

    May I suggest a hand drill (not electric) to remove the thing that hold the window in instead of a pincer? And being from Canada, yeah, this never came out here. I think it would've been pretty neat, cuz all we had at the time were the boxy Volvos. But then you started talking about the specs and the Renault engine and well, I doubt it would've been able to take on our climate.
    Really nice custom.

      Thanks! I usually use my modified drillbit that I’ve ground down to give it a flatter tip but this window was so loose all it needed was a bit of titivating with my pliers and it was off!
