  • In this episode, I unbox and setup my new Photon Mono X, large format resin printer. I do several test prints and compare to the results from my Creality printer, beginning the debugging process so I can optimize my prints. I will finish that optimization process in the next episode, as well as showing how to connect the printer to WIFI and your phone.

    Honestly, I found your video because I just upgraded from a Anycubic Photon Mono, to the X. The normal Mono is whisper quiet in comparison and I thought my X was faulty. I have checked your video to see the noise, and have felt a lot better. I guess the huge upgrade needs louder, bigger fans.

      Thanks, Peter! The clean-up with resin printing can be daunting, and waste disposal is an ongoing issue, but the results are truly amazing. Like most things in life, it's a tradeoff that everyone needs to evaluate for themselves. I personally love the smooth finish only resin printing delivers!

      @@GreylightMay that’s true. I guess having a good cleaning area and routine makes it a lot easier. I might have to give it a go to see how much better the results are than I’m used to with my good old Anycubic mega. Thanks again 👍

      @@GreylightMay I'll have to talk to my wife about settings, shes the guru on that stuff, but I can point you to a few things that have made our life a lot easier with the saturn that will help you too. First print yourself one of these, it mounts to your build plate, so you can after a print, hang the plate at a angle for better drainage. www.thingiverse.com/thing:4722055 Then you will want to go to thingiverse again and print a Handle to put on the top of your machines cover, this makes taking it off with one gloved hand EASY.

      @@GreylightMay Also if your machine has a Tank Clean option, omg its so useful in case of a failed print.. A good Trick with the Tank clean feature, is to put some old supports from a previous print in the corner of the tank sticking out of the resin, so when the tank clean feature makes a film layer, you can easily pull it out via the old support at the corner, and just peel the whole thing out.

    So Jelly. I want to get one of those. I already sold my FDM printer since I was printing almost everything in resin anyway. But that extra size would come in handy. That said, the glowforge is still my most used tool, by a pretty big margin.

    grey should print better that white because the darker the resin the better the edge definition will be, as less light leaks round/through the edge of the print with a darker resin, giving a cleaner edge and corner. (or so the rumour on the street says). Black is supposed to create the best quality but I always go for grey.

    Was that film you removed from the LCD not a screen protector?

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay  Před 2 lety

      Chris, this is an excellent question. I know they sell screen protectors now, and they are a good idea given how hard it is to remove cured resin from a screen. The instruction video I saw at the time said to remove the film after setup, and it had a small tab for easy removal, not like a phone screen protector. If I were to do this today (the Creality was brand new when I filmed this) I would run a test print and see if it worked with it on. Or I would buy a pack of official screen protectors and apply one of those. I would hope the new printers are shipping with screen protectors in the accessory pack, but resin printing was relatively new when I got started.

      Hi Ron! It's a great machine, you'll like it. My only complaint is that I'm changing the FEP more often than the Creality. I'm not sure if it's the FEP material, the large size, or what I'm printing, but I've gotten pretty good at screwing and unscrewing a WHOLE lot of little screws!

  • @aerouge4492
    @aerouge4492 Před 3 lety +2

    Nice video, though one thing you've said confuses me ... why would you need to change the FEP after a failed print?

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay  Před 3 lety +1

      Sandra, I've had cases where removing a failed print has stretched the FEP and it had to be replaced but towards the end of the video you will see that I talk about successfully removing the failed print that in fact occurred, and that I didn't need to replace it. You are right, if I had to replace it every time it would be discouraging!

      @GreylightMay  Před 3 lety +1

      Sandra, I held off until I saw it in the beta for Chitubox. I read a lot of concerning things about their slicing software that led to mixed reviews for the machine. I still have to work my way through the print quality issues. I'm spoiled by my Creality experience, which has been totally trouble-free. I don't doubt that printing at this scale and speed is a much more challenging task, and I'm happy to put the effort in to tune it in. I'm still amazed at what these machines can do for the price. It's an awesome advance in hobby level fabrication!
