How I Applied the Ten Skills To Create My Own Series of Custom Mandalas
In this episode, I show how I apply the skills outlined in my video Ten Skills for Designing Multilayer Mandalas for Laser Cutting to create a unique work of art for my porch, inspired by my favorite rug, which is in the room. I talk about how each of the 10 skills were used, showing them in a practical application. I go into a bit more detail about things that I've learned from comments on the prior video were confusing for some viewers. I am creating a second video that will show how the design drawings were used to create the color combinations, and I will show my fabrication techniques, and of course - the final result!

    I have a qustion for you , maybe you've come across this problem as well, I recently tried to print some minis for a D&D campaign Im apart of, I have a Creality LD002H resin printer, I was able to fit about 6 minis on the build plate at one time, they didnt overlap or go off the edge according to the program I use. When the print finished I noticed that none of the minis had been printed just the supports I had them on, this is before I replaced the FEP which need replacing anyways. Do you have any idea what could have caused it to fail? Since that print I have had no problems nor did I have problems before that but I went ahead and changed the film anyways because I noticed some cured resin was getting stuck to the film after each print I did which i wasnt sure why. Thank you!

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 18 dny

      Very mysterious! After you changed the FEP, did you do the same 6 minis you had tried earlier, and did they print successfully? Based on what you describe, I can't imagine why they failed, especially if the exact same print worked later.

    Thank you for the instructions, I do have one question. When you measure the tumbler, where do you measure? The tumbler is somewhat conical, so do you measure the middle or thickest/thinnest part?

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před měsícem

      Excellent question, one I had myself and couldn't find a definitive answer to. What I did, and it seemed to work, is measure near the middle of where the design was going, and did my best to use the adjustable foot to make the surface level. The Vision then does it's own measurement before engraving and this gives it enough information to do a nice clean job.

My goal is to teach you everything you need to recreate my projects or to design your own unique version. I had very little 3d design experience when I made these, it's really mostly about drawing the 2d designs for the front and the dials, and I have dozens of videos about how to do that. Start with something easier, like a 3d token, and work your way up to the tracker. I promise you'll get incredible satisfaction from making something you designed yourself!

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 2 měsíci

      I agree, so far support is the only negative I've found. It exists, but it's all online and it comes from China, so there is a built in time lag. I'm hoping this will improve soon, but I have no inside contacts, so I don't know what the company's plans are. The good news is it's a well made product, so the need for support should be less. There is also a sizable community of owners already, and there are a lot of talented and helpful people in the group, so short of needing to replace hardware, which only WeCreat can do, you can get advice and information from the user community. But your point remains a good one: for the price you've paid, you have a right to expect support!

      You will have so much fun! The Vision is the easiest laser cutter I've ever used, and you will really enjoy it. To head off the only potential issue I've had, watch this video of mine czcams.com/video/QpRB9oYtWes/video.htmlfeature=shared at about 8:50 in. It is possible the air assist hose is rubbing back and forth along a sharp metal edge when the machine is in use. The video shows my simple solution, which is to wrap the edge with a piece of adhesive backed felt strip. This has worked well for me, and protects the hose from getting cut. Hopefully, WeCreat has addressed this, but just in case!!

      The current version of the software is so improved, I haven't used Lightburn, even though they improved its integration. I think 3d engraving was the only thing I wanted they still didn't have - and bidirectional, as I said in the other response.

  • @LanceMcGrew
    @LanceMcGrew Před 2 měsíci

    Don't know what it is but I find it a real treat when someone actually pronounces speed in millimeters per second and power in percentage. Also, this machine is actually doing bidirectional raster engraving? Sure appears in several CZcams videos the beam is only on in one direction.

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 2 měsíci

      No, Lance, it is currently only one direction. I may have been misleading with my back and forth hand motion because I'm so used to using Lightburn bidirectional. I'm hoping WeCreat steps up to bidirectional, they are making lots of improvements, fast, and that is quite important for efficiency.

  • @LanceMcGrew
    @LanceMcGrew Před 2 měsíci

    Finding it interesting how similar their software UI is to Cricut Design Space as if the same folks developed both. Also, wondering how well this can engrave and cut 1/16" leather for baseball cap embellishments?

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 2 měsíci

      I haven't done leather yet, Lance, but my experience so far would lead me to believe that this is a great leather machine. It should easily cut that thickness, and more cleanly than I get on my OmTech. I will have to put leather on my project list! The ventilation on my 80watt CO2 laser is so powerful it is difficult to keep the leather in place. I made special magnetic clamps for that, but they don't work on the knife bed in the Vision, so I'll have to come up with a different clamping strategy. I've found that anything that fits in the WeCreat bed, I prefer to do there. So much of what I do is small, the OmTech is getting lonely!

  • @edd77777
    @edd77777 Před 2 měsíci

    One thing the manufacturer (and CZcams reviewers) do not mention is that this machine's auto-focus feature will not work properly on a curved surface. Your lased item must be flat, unless you're in the rotary setup.

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 2 měsíci

      edd, I haven't had this particular issue but I have provided my own feedback that they need to add a manual option. There have been a couple of situations where I really needed the ability to position the place where the focus laser hits. I can also think of instances in the past where I've adjusted the height based on the type and thickness of material. A curved surface is another good example. An advanced user needs more flexibility.

    Enjoyed tge video and got a lot out of it (I use Corel Draw so trying to see if I can use what you show and incorperate it into Corel). One thing that stood out I agree 100%, "...I would follow the instructions...because the person is so experienced, the skip over steps". Well at the 4 minute 12 second time line you say "Now the idead for this next part..." and you have something drawn out and have what you call "swatches" but never say how to create them(?). Continued watching but I guess my skill level needs much improving cause all I heard was "Blah Blah Blah". You definitly have the knowlege I just couldn't grasp it.

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 3 měsíci

      Drurigney, a swatch traditionally is a small square of fabric cut from a bolt of cloth that acts as a sample. THESE squares are samples of strokes that are used repeatedly in the mandala. A little later in the video you see how they are used because the eyedropper picks up the properties of a swatch and applies them to the active path you are drawing. The squares/swatches start out with two obvious properties: a color and a thickness. Different colors and thicknesses are used for each layer. I show adding the third property, which is how the stroke is aligned with the path: centered, on the inside and on the outside. Which of these you will use is based on the shape and the effect you want. The advantage of this setup is when you use a shape tool to draw a path it will start with a default color, thickness and alignment. While it is selected you can use the eyedropper to set the appropriate color and thickness for the layer and your preferred alignment with one click. It is a real productivity tool.

      @@GreylightMay Both x and y were both off by 1mm. Other than that, they appeared to be equal. I used a 100mm circle and the circle was about 99mm, maybe a little less. Kind of hard to measure a circle though. Might have to ingrave a horizontal and vertical line to be more precise.

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, that is odd because you would think that if you did a square and it was accurate, a circle engraved inside the square would be accurate as well. I would try cutting a square and vector engraving a circle with the same x/y dimensions and a shared center point. If the circle is smaller then I would ask the laser cutter's manufacturer why, because it wouldn't seem to be a calibration problem at that point. Very mysterious!

      Excellent question! I should have. They don't actually spin, if they did they wouldn't hold the number. Is there any way to know what is equipped on all members of the party without toggling between party members? And, why are some items in red font? I've always found it so tedious to try and go through and not sell or move equipped items to valuables, etc. Totally stumped and I am sure I am missing a simple element. I started writing down what I have equipped so I don't sell it but I must be missing something? (thanks for these vids btw!)

      Jonathan, it's been a very long time since I've played DAI! I made these videos when I first started my channel and people complained that it was too confusing to mix making videos and videogames videos, so I split into two channels, and then finally just focused on making. Did you see this one on equipping: czcams.com/video/uGj0MLfzZ8E/video.html The last 4 of the 10 lessons are on my dormant Greylight Games channel. My memory is that it is a continuous toggling through process, and it is similar still today in new games. Speaking of which, when you are done with DAI, checkout Baldur's Gate 3. It is the only game I've found that I love even more than DAI!!

      @@GreylightMay thank you! I hadn't seen the other dormant channel - will check it out! I know with DAI... I am like 10 years behind the times lol. And yes to BG3! I plan on upgrading to a PS5 after I finish DAI - that is first on my list, and will hopefully hold me over until the next DAI drops. Thanks so much for replying - I really appreciate it. 🙂

I really appreciate you getting back to me and for making these channels. started playing at 51, now 53 and hooked. You will love BG3! The story, the characters and the voice acting make it a real joy to play. The turn based fighting is different from DAI, but I really enjoy that strategy is key to winning the battle, not reflexes and memorizing a complicated series of button pushes like so many games nowadays. I like having romance as part of the game, and the options there are good as well. I just read that BG3 is the first ever game to win all five game of the year awards, and it really deserves it!!

    Have you tried to make layered mandalas with AI, I've been trying for over 6 months with NO luck so far. It will generate some great large scale lovely looking finished pieces but cannot grasp the concept of separating the layers.

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, Martin, I found exactly the same thing with Dalle 3. And unlike text oriented LLMs like Claude, which I work with a lot, you can't keep refining the prompt and get better and better results. Dalle 3 just hits a wall, like when I tried to get 8 reindeer on Santa's sleigh in my Christmas video. I've decided I need to wait for the next version of Dalle before I try again. So frustrating when it can make a beautiful multilayer design but it just can't separate it!!

    How do you turn your original photo’s of the house into the perspective view you showed on your workplace to work from?

    • @GreylightMay
      @GreylightMay Před 4 měsíci

      Fabalass, if you can get a clear photo of the house, without trees, it will always have perspective because that is what an eye or camera lens sees. The problem in this picture is the trees obscuring the roofline. I had to use the bits I could see and my knowledge of how the roofline would angle in with perspective to draw in the missing parts. This is really the 'art' part of the project, and it doesn't need to be perfect to look good. Without the problem of the trees, you could just trace a front photo of any house and the perspective view would be built in.

    Inspired by you to buy a Two Trees laser cutter and Lightburn. Have had the setup for a month, and have been having a blast 🙌 Tab construction all the way! @GreylightMay I would say that the laser cutter is nothing short of transformative. I have 3D printers, a foam cutter, and other tools. But the laser has proven itself to be a real workhorse: Good speed, reasonable cost of materials, and a very forgiving and simple usage. Thank you again for all your effort!
