Today We are comparing two of the best turboprop aircraft in the market. If you have about $3,000,000 to spend on your next airplane and you need to carry 4-5 passengers, The Piper M600 and TBM 940 should be on your shortlist of airplanes.
The real question here though is which is the better turboprop airplane. Both serve similar missions and just as capable. But one of the airplanes, the TBM 940 cost a million dollars more.
Here is a list of all the categories we looked at.
Mission - Both aircraft are capable cross country machines with similar performance characteristics. The M600 will take you up to 1480 nautical miles while the TBM 940 will take you up to 1723 nautical miles.
Design - Both airplanes are low wing turboprops with retractable landing gears. The TBM 940 seem to be more practical though in its design. Having 2 large doors instead of one can go a long way with many pilots.
Comfort - Which aircraft can carry all six people in best comfort and relaxation? This is a bit tough because the cabin space for both airplanes are quite roomy and spacious. The Piper M600 does seem to have a bit more leg room and larger windows. in the TBM 940, you have nice recliner seats.
Performance - which is the best performing airplane? TBM 940 hands down is the better performing airplane. With faster speeds and more range.
Purchase Price - Piper M600 fully loaded will cost about $3.4 million. TBM 940 fully loaded will cost $4.6 million

I flew a tbm940 from Chile to Montana last summer. Then from delivery, I picked up the owners SR22 (which I ended up buying) and flew to Alaska, then Vegas, followed by California. It was an awesome 5 days flying!
The 940 was a lot of fun to fly. Fast, great climb rate, nimble considering what it actually is.
Honestly though, for the price, I think I'd get something im comfortable flying over water instead, like the DA62. Dual engines are both a blessing and a curse.

The problem I have with all of the TBM models from the 850 on up is 1: They all have an 850SHP engine and 2: The all only seat 6 people. But what they are trying to sell is speed for small groups of people. I think the Pilatus PC-12NG & NGX are the best turbo-props for the money on the market. I totally agree with you Mike that the M600 is the best plane for the buck between it and the TBM. 1 million dollars can buy a lot of fuel for the M600.

Resale on m600 won’t be good either, very flimsy tincan construction compared to e1000 and TBM aircraft. There will be ADs coming for m600 much sooner than the other planes. M600 turbine overheats on takeoff very easily in hot climates because the “inertial separator” is on all the time, you can’t control it, unlike TBM and e1000.

I flew a Meridian, made me happier with my Mooney. The Piper felt like it wasn’t made well even though the demonstrator had less than 100 hours. Pilot seat in the mooney is also more comfortable. I didn’t have a big need for the extra seats, and most people I know hardly use the extra seats either unless they have a regular trip to a weekend home.
I haven’t been in a TBM in long time. I found it a very nice plane. I was too large to get into the seat from the cabin so I would have had to use the door. Looked comfortable though.

Ego booster? If you drive a Honda Accord versus a Tesla model S plaid, everyone will know the difference and I guess you can relish in that. 99.99% of the public has no idea about planes and couldn't care less which plane you fly. No, it's all about practicality. The TBM 940 is 56 knots faster. If you need the extra speed and have the cash, why not go for it? But it's nothing to do with ego boost.
Personally, it's hard justifying spending $1 million more for what you get. You can carry 4 grown adults, weighing 200 lbs each on the M600 and still have 200 lbs for baggage. And let's be honest: who the heck is going more than four hours on a plane without one or more of the passengers needing a bathroom break?

If I had that kind of money I'd by a Beechcraft Duke, renovate the interior, upgrade the avionics, and replace the piston engines with a couple Pratt and Whitney turbo prop engines. Royal Turbine Duke...yes please!

Yea, that plane is a legend, takes off like a fighter plane. You have to rebuild the tail because of the magnesium problem though and that’s a must, so this is a real millionaire plane project. If you want a plane that’s even better though and built like a tank with better support, you go Mitsubishi MU2.

You missed the Pilatus PC-12 NGX.. Cheaper and more room. Might not be as fast, but who cares. Its the journey, not the destination with pilots.
That 330 KTS of the TBM is True Air Speed according to the specs of Daher.
The TBM is worth every dollar over that of the Piper.

Mike I was looking and didn't see, but do you have a video on plane maintenance costs, for hourly, and how to choose a good mechanic to make sure everything is safe and ready to go, and how often they should be looking the airplane over?

The TBM has a button u can push for an emergency that will land its self. In case something happened to the pilot. Idk about the piper tho.

I honestly think its because TBM is made in France and performs better is why it's more expensive....same concept with some European cars vs some American cars. 🤷🏾‍♂️
