    Great video! Not many out there to compare fuel economy of car setups like this. I am building a Mark IV 454 with Holley Sniper EFI, T56 Magnum 6 speed, and 3.73 gears so when seeing that result on the 6 speed here it gets me excited at how well it could do. Thanks for making the video!

    Cool video guys, when I swapped the T56 into my 68 with a bone stock 76 dually 454 engine it got 17mpg with 3.90 gears and 26” tires and a holly 750 double pumper. Since then I’ve built a 496 for it, built the rear end with eaton posi and 4.11 gears complete ride tech suspension frame off rotisserie restoration. When the car is back together I’m expecting to break into the 20mpg range. It will cruise at 2300rpm. The rpm is half the battle. The cam is the other half, you need to be up on the cam in order to take advantage of the drop in rpm. If the cam doesn’t start making power until 3000 rpm you’ll be lugging. With my previous setup I was lugging in 6th unless I was doing 75mph. I will let you folks know how I do because I found it to be a serious struggle gathering information when I did this 4 years ago. Nobody had done this, people would laugh when I would try to talk about a big block chevelle and fuel economy in the same sentence. I’m here to prove you can have your cake and eat it too, keep the simple carburetor, jet it properly, with the proper combination I know we can compete and even beat newer cars.

    Glad to find this. I was able to achieve 19 mpg best in 1975 with my 1967 chevelle. 396 350 horse 4 spd Muncie 3:55 gears . Ran high 13s at Detroit dragway. No BS. Same engine in my 70 w31 would barely get 15 with a little less gear. Must admit I drove the chevelle at that time about 60. 55 mph speed limit. Not so slow in the w31 in 1977. I wonder if the fuel would factor in between then and now. I know how fortunate I am to have been able to be in my teens back then. Still have my chevelle and want to drive it on long cruises, thinking about a od trans.

    Seems like a fun drive between Chevelle friends under the guise of a science experiment. It really comes down to how much air/fuel you are running through the engine or RPM you are running while driving. You can get a TKO-600 with a .64 ratio 5th speed that is similar to the .63 ratio of your 6 speed. Tire diam and diff gears play a factor as well. If you had the same tires and diff gears you may not notice any difference in MPG if the 68 had the .64 5th. Given the two options I would prefer the 68 with the 4.11 diff. I prefer the 60's look and the acceleration with the 4.11 is more fun.

  • @firebirdjone
    @firebirdjone Před 4 lety +5

    Unfortunately he chose the TKO with a .82 overdrive. If he had installed the .64 overdrive TKO the outcome would have been nearly identical to the 6 speed.

    • @SS454LS6
      @SS454LS6  Před 4 lety +2

      I definitely think with a 0.64 gear in the TKO it would be much closer. However I think most that own a TKO with a .64 say it's too much of an RPM drop between 4th gear and 5th gear. If most of your cruising is below 50 mph/80 kph, I would say the .82 gear is a better choice.

    • @firebirdjone
      @firebirdjone Před 4 lety +4

      @@SS454LS6
      I've done a couple dozen of those swaps and haven't had an owner yet complain of the rpm drop. The big blocks soak it up easily, and even less of a problem with the 4.10 gear he's running. I'm currently running a .64 version behind a little 302 with just 3.55's out back, and it works beautifully. I think people miss the boat choosing the .82 unless they have something like 3.08's out back.
      With the .82 version and 4.10's, it only makes his effective ratio a 3.36, that's why his highway rpm isn't all that great and his mpg is suffering as a result. He could have run a 3.31 out back with an M-20 and accomplished the same thing. Just pointing out the discrepancy on the comparison. I like the cars so don't take it the wrong way, I have a 454 chevelle myself and I like what you guys are doing. As long as you're enjoying it that's what counts.

    • @SS454LS6
      @SS454LS6  Před 4 lety +1

      @@firebirdjone You are pointing out a fact, and I agree. Another way to look at is my T56 has a .80 5th gear, so having that extra OD gear has some cruising benefits over a 5 speed.
      I'm surprised you haven't seen more issues with the .64 5th gear. A lot, if not most guys I know with some pepped up muscle car's (SB or BB), their engines don't like steady cruise much below 1800 rpm. A .64 gear on a 27-28" tall tire falls around 1400-1500 rpm at 50 mph. But at highway speeds the .64 gear is great!

    • @firebirdjone
      @firebirdjone Před 4 lety +2

      @@SS454LS6
      Most of it is tuning, especially if running a camshaft with some overlap. I use 5th cruising around town in the 302. It pulls down to 35 mph without complaints with the 3.55 out back and a 27" tire. 1800 is 65mph and it pulls the mountain grades around here without downshifting. Pretty nice actually. Speed limit here is 75mph which is about 2100 rpm. Really a sweet area rpm wise to be in for good fuel economy, which is the whole benefit of having it. I actually like 3.73's with this trans the best but the 3.55's work well enough it's not worth messing with.
      I do like that T56 swap. I had a couple cars with T56's but it's been a few years. Mine were .50 6th gear. Really nice trans with a nice gear spread.

    • @andrewchemello5011
      @andrewchemello5011 Před 4 lety +2

      Actually I like the .082 overdrive and I made the best decision for my driving. I typically drive the car below highway speeds and use 5th gear all the time. The car doesn't see the faster highway speeds that we drove on the video too often. I restored the car in 1994 and back then it had a 4 speed and 4:56 gears. It used to rev so high on the highway that I threw out my tach because I was driving too slow trying to keep the RPM at 3500. After removing the tach I kept up with traffic by not knowing my RPM. I drove for 20 years like that. So to swap to a 5 speed and 4:11 gears for me is perfect. Side note: The car has a GM built LS-6 big block crate motor that I bought 29 years ago and I will not take it apart because it has ran 12 seconds in the quarter the past 25 years. I have replaced only valve springs 3 times over that period. I need the gear ratio to work with the dinosaur engine.

    It was an interesting comparison of the vehicle setup and fuel mileage. But not even close in looking at the differences between a 6spd and 5spd. If the 6spd car had only shifted to 5th (.80) then there might be some common ground. A reasonable test would to have both transmissions (5spd and 6spd)
    with the same overdrive ratio, the same differential gear and of course the the same (identical) rear tires.
