    The manual transmission is without a doubt one of the greatest inventions of modern history. That said, it's certainly not without flaws. Manual transmissions use a clutch instead of a torque converter like automatics, in order to create a coupling between the engine and the transmission. You might be surprised to find out that this actually results in lower wheel torque than an automatic. Additionally, manual transmissions shift differently than automatics, and this also leads to additional complications. While providing more control to the driver is generally a benefit, allowing a computer to take control can often lead to less mistakes. Check out the video for five major advantages of automatics over manual transmissions, which may impact your next buying decision.

    One disadvantage of manuals that I learned the hard way: you need all 4 limbs to operate it. If you travel alone, and hurt either a hand or a leg (especially a leg), you are basically stranded. On the other hand, a pirate with one hand, one leg and one eye would be perfectly fine operating an automatic, he would probably even be texting his crewmates in the process.

    I am surprised I haven't see more people mention it. The biggest advantage of an automatic is being able to inch forward more easily especially while in traffic.
    For example: lets say you are driving in stop and start traffic on the freeway. You don't have to constantly be operating the clutch while putting the car in 1st gear then neutral. All you have to do in an automatic is release the break to start and then press the break to stop -> even the gas is not necessary unless you are going over 5 miles an hour. You might not think this is that big of a deal but most people get very tired driving in slow traffic for hours with a manual.

    • @robertulrich3964
      @robertulrich3964 Před 5 měsíci +5

      im suprised at your statement. actually, you can slip a clutch out 5% and creep forward in heavy traffic. if you don't tailgate, one could argue, there's less work because you don't have to start/stop with a brake, you slip and creep. at least that's how my car worked. there might be some cars that have really heavy clutches which is outside my point.

    The only time I have felt my manual transmission was a disadvantage was the time I was driving cross country to work with a coworker to save fatigue and split fuel cost. When he got in the car his eyes got big and he said"this is a manual?' I said, "yep " and thought nothing of it till it was his turn to drive, at which point he admitted he had never driven a manual..... I wound up driving the whole 1500 miles straight through after a failed attempt to coach him on how to drive a stick. Lessons ended after he stomped the parking brake instead of the clutch while taking an off ramp. On the plus side he covered all fuel for the trip to make up for his inability to drive.

    For off-road, you did make a couple comments but this is where an auto really shines. The control and low crawl without stalling at incline is paramount. Try losing power brakes, steering when off camber and extreme angle - and restarting your engine when gravity is not helping fluids etc. In addition - the shock load on non-upgraded drivetrain parts when people put oversized wheels/tires - an auto will drastically help that.

    • @benmlee
      @benmlee Před 3 měsíci +1

      Main advantage of auto is slow crawling. The shock on drivetrain is up to the driver, and you do have a few reserve braking cycles even after engine stalls. On the plus side of manual, the main thing is feel for terrain. You know exactly how much power and how fast the wheels are turning. You can feel when the tire starts to slip even a tiny amount. Very important when you are rocking back and forth to get unstuck. Going thru varying terrain, you can feel when is slippery, so don't gas it. Then when you feel more traction, give it good gas to get back up to speed. With auto, you loose all that.
      I hardly get stuck driving manual. With auto transmission, I got stuck in sand where I normally would have no issue feeling the terrain. Takes finesse to drive a manual.
      I use to see it all the time at the mud flats in Azusa, CA. Guys in auto trucks would floor the gas and dig themselves up to the axel without realizing the wheels are just spinning. With manual, you know that immediately and stop.

    A few advantages with the manual. 1) Your vehicle will never be stolen because no one can drive a manual anymore. 2) You won't have to pay $5,000 to have your automatic transmission replaced. You will have to do a clutch, but that costs a lot less. My Honda Civic Si has 150,000 miles on it and the clutch still works like brand new. 3) You can coast! I do this all the time when I see a red light coming up or going downhill. 4) If your battery dies, you can still get your car started. Get the car on a little incline, hop in, let it roll down the incline and pop the clutch. Boom, you are on your way.

    I'll give you one very good reason to stick to manuals. Yeah, ultimately, modern automatics are quicker in acceleration, but you will pay for that slight advantage with a major repair bill when it breaks, and most likely, it will. You can drive a manual almost as fast, and if you don't beat the clutch and syncros to death, that system will ultimately last longer and repairs that might be needed would be less costly. Also, I believe ultimate feel and control of traction is better in a manual, as well as the driver needing to pay attention to road conditions more to determine the proper gear to be in. Automatics may be faster but manuals are more fun and maybe safer.

    I was always fine with a manual; drove them almost exclusively for almost 30 years. Then autos stopped being slushboxes and you could determine your level of engagement. But I do miss throwing gears. The only thing I don't miss are long left turns from a stop. I hate that you have that shift mid-turn and it upsets the chassis ever so slightly, though that means nothing in normal driving. Just hated the FEEL of it. So I would start from 2nd. But other than that, I miss manuals.

    3. 8spd, 10spds allow fuel efficiency through optimization of torque curves and lower revs at cruising speed. Manuals end at 6 or 7th gear.

    Autos have improved so much during last 20 years, my original car had 3 gears and no synchromesh on 1st gear. This meant that on the very rare occasions 1st was needed whilst still moving neutral needed selecting with clutch up, engine then reved then clutch dipped and gear selected. Called double de clutching technique needed on many European trucks into 1990s.

      As the realist myself. I can assure you that if your clutch have 370.00km it have worn some.. but it will probably last at least 600.000km as it feels like you know how to treat a clutch correctly.

      @kylehart8829 Před 3 lety +12

      My miata's factory clutch has been absolutely tortured for 250k miles at this point, and it's still working perfectly. Previous owner drove it like a maniac, according to himself. I've kinda given up on keeping the trans intact as reverse and second gear barely have synchros at this point; when it finally gets too bad to be daily-drivable I'll be putting a lighter flywheel and new clutch in it anyway. But still 250k miles on a clutch that's been heavily abused is pretty impressive even if the vehicle is underpowered.

      Ventsislav Stefanov depends on the car, of course the automatic transmission in sports cars is much faster than a human can shift manually, but I assure you that is not the case with your typical Toyota Corolla’s automatic transmission.

      Happy Hands because race cars are not about going fast, but to have supreme handle in corners, that’s why EVERY SINGLE production hyper car is faster yet it costs one tenth of the price on average.

    Don't most M1 vehicles use double-clutch automatic transmision, rather than the shown hydrodynamic one? I feel like many of the points towards automatics (not only) in this video just don't count with these vehicles. And I'm wondering how much of that would apply to the increasingly popular CVTs.

      Chris W We learn in a manual usually, but nowadays an AT is fairly 'standard' even in compact cars - still an option there in most cars, but also often taken. Luckily my daily driver is a manual, I have to drive an AT almost everytime I rent a car. It's not that avoidable anymore...
