Where others are usually just a confusing cgi mess, Avatar action scenes have a flow about them, it's like action movie poetry. I will never EVER forget the movie experience I had seeing Avatar, opening weekend, IMAX 3D. I was completely and totally immersed into Pandora and completely lost touch of my surroundings. The visuals, the music, just the entire “flow” and pacing of the movie is absolutely flawless. I have not had a movie-going experience like that before or since. Even Avengers Endgame didn’t have that effect on me.
Yes the characters aren’t the greatest, the acting was average, some of the dialogue is super cringy, and the story is super simple and predictable.
But the technical masterpiece and visual and audio experience that James Cameron created allowed the movie to be more than just a “movie” for me. The 3D effects were mind-blowing. The imagination of Pandora and the biology and ecosystem created within the worlds was very convincing and allowed you to immerse yourself into this world.
I remember having “goosebumps” many times by how amazing the experience I was having was, and I cried when “Home Tree” was brought down.
I’ve seen Avatar dozens of times since, and I absolutely cannot wait for the sequels to start arriving. I know James has poured everything over the past 13 years into this movie and the sequels. His is easily one of the greatest movie creators of our time. I have a feeling Avatar 2 will be much like Terminator 2 and completely change the entire film industry once again and become an instant iconic film. Really looking forward to what Mr. Cameron and his crew have been working on this entire time.

Me and my friend were walking around the supermarket afterwards thinking reality looked so bland! haha. I always thought the end 3rd or so action sequences were particularly incredible. They make other films look amateur by comparison. I can't wait to see this new one in 3D in the cinema, at the very least it will look amazing. Well said. Avatar isn't a normal movie, not something you watch on your laptop, phone, or even TV. It's a visual spectacle and immersive experience, and something that had to be seen in the largest screen available with 3D (IMAX for the win). If you watch Avatar on your 14 inch MacBook, your only takeaways would be that the CGI was pretty good. If you watched it the way it's supposed to, your takeaways are you want to live on Pandora.

The spectacular 3D effects in Avatar changed the way Hollywood makes movies. Before Avatar 3D was mostly a cheesy gimmick. After Avatar pretty much all major sci-fi, fantasy, and comicbook movies start coming out with 3D versions in parallel to 2D versions.

I think the common criticism of Avatar that the characters are just archetypes is completely misses the point. Them been the archetypal is not a flaw but the whole point of the story Cameron is telling. The most meaningful, deep, universal, and timeless stories humanity has - that being myths and legends, are all archetypal and can not exist in any other way. Avatar is not simplistic, it is mythical. The characters are not one dimentional, they are the archetypal embodiments of human virtues and also vices.

    • @AWSVids
      @AWSVids Před 2 lety +39

The ironic thing about the common criticism that Avatar is just "Dances With Wolves in space" is that Avatar will most likely (and in many ways, already has) superseded Dances With Wolves in almost every way. It's a good movie, but for all the crap Avatar gets about not being the first one to do this type of story, it's not like Dances With Wolves was the first "stranger comes to town" story. It doesn't matter who did what first. What matters is who did it most effectively in the way that will impact the most people and last the longest in terms of relevance. And again, it's ironic that while people say Avatar is not relevant and "nobody talks about it"... nobody talks about Dances With Wolves either, EXCEPT when they're using it to talk about Avatar.
With the coming sequels, along with the place in history that Avatar earned in terms of box office and setting the 3D trend, as well as the technological breakthroughs, etc... Avatar did so much more than just tell the same basic story as other movies, and it'll live a lot longer as a memorable movie because of that. Nobody is showing their kids Dances With Wolves. They're showing their kids Avatar. By the time we do get to Avatar 5, whenever that may end up being... this franchise will have earned an even more significant place in box office and film history. Anybody thinking it somehow won't just doesn't understand that general movie audiences don't give one half of one percent of the crap that film snobs do about Avatar being "unoriginal" or "simplistic"... they liked the pretty blue alien movie and they'll go see more pretty blue alien movies. They'll pay the highest possible price for the 3D IMAX D-BOX DOLBY ATMOS SCREEN-X 4D VIP showing with Advance Digital Copy of the pretty blue alien movie.

As a huge fan of EVERYTHING James Cameron have done, I'm absolutely exciting about Avatar 2. Lot of people in the internet today just like to mock Avatar and not understand why is STILL the highest grossing film of all times (sorry Endgame) and why it did it organically, without the need of a Universe of films, or be the sequel of something, is this vision that James have that he as you describe manage to WOW us, watching Avatar in cinema was an EXPERIENCE, just like watching Terminator 1 and 2, Star Wars, that first Avengers, The Dark Knight, Md Max Fury Road, Jurassic Park, E.T, etc.....was looking at MOVIE MAGIC, something that you see and ask.....HOW THE HELL THEY DO THAT?...and the fact that Cameron, comically almost take so damn long to do films is always because he is chasing that impossible vision, that technology, never seen before, the reason even ideas he had like Alita Battle Angel, didn't become a reality like 20 years ago when he got the rights, have to wait because the technology wasn't there yet, just like Avatar. These amazing artists, the George Lucas, the Steven Spielberg's, The Guillermo del Toro's the Ridley Scotts, now days the Denis Villeneuve's of the world, are chasing that VISION, that why you get so inspired by their works, more than any AVENGERS MCU films will ever do. I didn´t knew why James wanted to do 4 films in a row....but now I start to understand, the madman have a VISION again and he is going harder than ever to make it a reality, the way even filming the idea of the kids NOW, is actually.....genius, something films like Harry Potter never thought, now knowing that and this is probably just 1 example of what he is doing.......man I'm more exciting about this.

What about the money studios made with the success of Star Wars franchise including merchandise. Lucas created a brand that's still so huge, definitely bigger than Avatar. talking bout funding, Studios funded Titanic with highest budget at that time, a generic love story garbed in an epic tragedy, plot points and dialogues were also plagiarised from classic black n white Night to Remember movie. It worked but if it hadn't then Cameron would have to make his R Rated Spider-Man movie in 90s cancelled one, because he was broke. Lucas kick started a grander vision of an iconic mythos a superior brand with his vision while also creating room by enticing studio to fund ILM which is still prominent and one of the biggest visual effects studio that does work for many blockbusters including Avatar and other franchises. Lucas vision for that brand paved way for future generations and a company that's still relevant while inspiring Cameron to pursue filmmaking. Cameron admitted Star Wars inspired him. I think what a lot of people tend to brush past is that there is thematic depth in Avatar's "thin" characterizations. A lot of it is implicit, like how Quaritch's callsign is 'Papa Dragon' and pilots both a ship and mecha bearing a dragon insignia, the latter of which features a giant knife and the stature to just beat out that of the Na'vi (the fact that he's been resurrected as on in the sequel is also fascinating); the symbolism is self-explanatory, but the psychology is subtle. He's obsessed with asserting his dominance over the 'Other', which he deems inferior. He operates through intimidation and fear, which is how all colonizing military leaders _have_ to think in order to be successful. Unless you're of a sort that believes [alien] colonial takeover is destined fate for all indigenous beings, you'd find the moral grey area to be inherently quite thin.
As for Jake, the fact that he is, as a man, unremarkable is so intentional that it's brought up at multiple points in the story as being the explicit reason for him being accepted by the Na'vi; he's a blank slate. When he requests to be taught their ways, Mo'at tells him "it is hard to fill a cup that is already full" to which he responds by telling her his cup's just about empty. He doesn't have attachments or investments in his old life on Earth, and only has space to learn and reinvent himself -- something that not even Grace or Norm had, despite their aspirations to learn from the Na'vi as well.
There are many other examples, but the point is that Avatar affords itself a much deeper assessment of character than most people are willing to provide them purely due to the fact that they assume they know the ins-and-outs of such a familiar story, and therefor don't extend the same introspection to its characters.

I agree to this. There's a scene in the new movie (sorry for potential spoilers) where Quaritch, now in an Avatar body, revisits the site of his death and hold his old skull in his hand. His expression and action that follow speak more to how he feels than any words could, and potentially conflicting emotions at the same time. Or maybe I'm reaching, but the fact that I CAN still says something, I think.

It's visually incredible, it has Tolkien-level-world-building, the soundtrack is James Horner's magnum opus. it will either be that or it will collapse under the weight of its own hubris, im not sure theres going to be any middle ground situation as its taken so long to come out that the established hollywood system is collapsing, maybe avatar 2 will be credited with reinvigorating and reinventing it, like star wars did in 1977, but something tells me thats going to take a huge leap in technology that brings something truly novel to the way entertainment is consumed, rather than what Avatar 2 will be, not saying it won't push the boundaries of visual realism, and so called 3D is kind of a failure as it never really took off because people didn't want to have to wear those glasses, maybe if they found a way to do it without the glasses, then maybe but I still don't know.

It's not a coincidence that much of the beautiful imagery was taken from Dean's incredible fantasy-scape paintings. It's similar to Cameron's first big hit, "Terminator" where I immediately realized the direct influence of 2 Twilight Zone episodes whose stories were combine to create the script. Eventually Cameron had to give a special acknowledgement credit to Harlan Ellison who said that he didn't want payment for his ideas which inspired the movie. But with no offer to compensate Dean, Roger had to sue and was unfortunately out lawyered by Cameron.

Back when AVATAR was released, there were news articles depicting a large number of people feeling depression and suicidal after watching the movie. As someone who felt this depression after seeing the movie for the first time in cinemas, I can tell you that the depression does not stem from the want to be on Pandora, the depression stems from the fact that this Earth IS Pandora.
The depression settles in as more realizations begin to occur. Humanity is allowing itself to become a disease to the planet, all for the sake of material gain. In any movie review of James Cameron’s AVATAR, we are mostly told it is praised for it’s CGI and not for it’s story. Which for the most part, lacked originality.
Comparisons are made to previous stories. Stories such as Ferngully, Pocahontas, and Dances with Wolves. Yet, what astounds me is that while people compare AVATAR to these films, they do not compare it to the events and situations that these films are focused on. Events and situations that are still ongoing to this day.
AVATAR uses symbolism and imagery to portray the atrocities committed by the Corporatocracy.
And, how our ignorance not only allows these atrocities to occur - but, also has halted our evolution.
AVATAR is not only a social commentary on the Extortion of Natural Resources, Exploitation of Indigenous Peoples, or Aboriginal Genocide. It is a simulation of what life can be..
I have made a in depth analysis of the film on my channel.
Every claim in the analysis can be researched by anyone and a clear consensus can be reached.
The film not only shows that the planet we are from is the mother of all life, it shows an alternative form of humanity. The Na'Vi are representative of Neohumanism*, the next stage in our evolutionary path. The humans depicted in the film are clearly shown to be from the Western world. Working for Corporations that seek to maximize profits regardless of social or environmental loss. So, what we have here is a film depicting two possible forms of humanity, the old paradigm vs the new paradigm,
