- This is my 281st Episode of Mike Finnegan's Garage and I filmed it while I was traveling to film Roadkill. Once we wrapped filming Roadkill in Gardena, California I drove to Torrance, California to the headquarters of Ace Racing Engines. There, I got to look at and fondle parts that I've collected over the past 12 months for an upcoming project car. This episode is about the very first steps in building the engine, namely measuring the oil clearances of each crankshaft main bearing. It's a sweet video that will help you when it's time to build your first engine. If you have questions, post them in the comments and if you'd like to speak with Stef of Ace Racing Engines, the visit their website here: ace-engines.com
Here are some helpful links the parts I bought for my engine build:

This guy has more projects started than vgg has revivals in rusty acres 😂
In another month Rusty Acres will be barn finds in a barn.
😂😂😂😂😂
😂lol who the fuk watches vice crap garage 😂
Yessssss
Far from it🤣
Stef is the man, very detailed oriented and many winning engines out there
Its patently obvious that some people know their shit as soon as they open their mouth, this guy is one of them
That engine block is a piece of sculpture, serious Automotive eye candy a real treat.👍
I love it when GM based stuff is infused with Ford parts to make an improvement! haha
I have followed ACE on their instagram for a long time now and it's always extremely impressive, extremely clean builds. The Noonan stuff is top notch too.
Another great video Mike. Love seeing an engine shop that's spotless and as clean and organized as an operating room. I remember, back in the day, when engine shops were always dark, cluttered and greasy. The new block and rotating assembly look like jewelry. Perfect.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's 6061.
That's a man that takes his job seriously
That Brummie/US combination accent isn't something you hear often, didn't expect that!
Thank you for pointing out the likely origins. My ear was struggling to figure it out.
Theres something about the sight of machined billit aluminium that makes my heart sing!😍😀
One sweet block. Thanks for showing us.
Stef is an amazing engine builder, and glad to call him a friend of our magazine as well. Very cool that you showcased his shop and are working with ACE to build this sweet billet engine!
Got to love being able to see these ultra high end parts and companies you deal with, great stuff as usual Mike.
oooohhhhh that crank is pretty! 😁
Bloody hell, I once brought an engine off Stefan rossi in the UK. That's random, good to see him succeeding.
4Ever grudge playing in the background!🙌🙌💪 nice video guys!
I've never seen such big main caps!
Great video. The attention to detail you get from a true professional engine builder is very impressive.
Stefan and ACE are the best!!
Thankyou Scott!
Them ford small block comments from the engine builder pure gold
Finnegan is just out here collecting all the engine builders engines. Mands got more in engines than i have in my whole life savings.
Hell yeah this is great! This is going to be mega I love my ace racing motor can’t wait to see what you do with one especially one of those! Stefan is the man!
Always impressed with the attention of detail from the Brits. There should be Motec and Haltech stickers on his toolboxes ;)
Simply astonishing.
I’m calling it. The secret drag and drive is an extended cab Nissan Hardbody. We all know Fin’s love of mini trucks and LS’. It was bound to happen.
White Lexus lc500. Remember seeing it on turbobullet
Think so? That’s a slippery body, and has worked well for Swanstrom. Whatever it is… can’t wait!
i remember he just show the back wheels and half fender and exactly its a lexus lc500. thats the same on turbo bullet forum
I've seen an Aluminum engine assy. up close and thought it was amazing!! This on the other hand... is outa this world beautiful!!
Great stuff as always. Thanks to Ace for sharing.
Definitely a nice piece Mike.
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Nice of them to let you come in the shop.
Have a great day.
Oh great another LS.... The world really needed that.
That block looks like a piece of art. Can't wait to see you put it to work.
Wow, mister finnegan, i've never been a artsy fartsy guy, but that block is pure art fabulous to look at and i'm sure it's gonna be fabulous in your car good luck, brother
Good stuff, amazing how much motor’s have come. Love my LS
Sounds very cool...should be exciting when finished.
Awesome advancements in motors.
Videos like this just remind me how much I don't know about building an engine! LOL
Mike thanks for the engine room footage. I could watch and listen to engine builders all day and pick little things from each.
Do you know the race dates at Ming yet? I want to come watch you race
Finn, I hope we get to see more of the assembly in future videos!
That's a great looking block!😎👍🏻
Another great, informative post Mike, thanks for posting it.
Stefs' knowledge was great to watch and listen to.
The caddy needs to be done and running but then seeing the new project is something to look forward to 🙂
Very informative video Mike!! Thanks for sharing 👍. I always loved building engines. Years ago I built a 350 for my brother's sportsmen dirt modified. While everyone else was spending 25-30k for a special built engine (i.e. Tony File engine) , a lot of us who love the sport, but don't have a endless bank account, made due with what we could get.
I had a 1973 350 engine from a Canadian Chevy Suburban. 2 barrel, bolt block. The block casting # 3970014. I had the machine shop install splayed 4 bolt main caps and bore it 30 thou over. I had a factory steel 350 crank, and had it turned 10/10 because of wearing showing. I also had a set of pink rods I bought from a friend. I used Keith Black hypereutectic pistons and rings. The heads I had were 327/300hp casting number 3917291. I had the bigger 2.02/1.60 valves installed with bronze guides. The camshaft was from Crane, and was a hydraulic tappet, with the same specs as the 1970 LT1 Vette camshaft. Fluid damper, and a Pete Jackson gear drive.
I had a digital scale, and weighed everything for the rotating assembly making sure it was dead on. It ran great.
One night my brother was pushed up into the marbles, and panicked. He coasted into the pits upset and apologized to me. I asked him what noise it made when he shut it down. "I don't know, but look!". He hit the button on the tachometer to show the highest rpm. It buried the needle at 9k. My father says, fire it up so I can hear it. After my brother fired up the car, my dad's words were 😂😂😂. "It's fine!! Get the bleep- ity- bleep back out there!!". While this was going on, they were clearing up the track for the accident that he was pushed up the track for. He started in the back of the field, still on the lead lap. My bragging rights:
1) he won the race.
2) he set the track record lap time
3) I built a Chevy 350 that turned 9k rpm! My total out of pocket was only 6k!😎🇺🇲🇺🇲
Followed Stef for a long time. So happy to see you working with him
Congrats!! Stefan is the man!!!!
Hmmm. Thinking the nod to fox bodies at the start of the video may be purposeful.😊
Just wanted to say thanks for posting content during your time spent filming roadkill. It says alot about your commitment to your fans. Much appreciated and I have no idea what car this engine is going in and I won't guess either 😂. Just looking forward for more FSM garage content.
Yeah, I'm with ya', hate to see anything finished.
I know Stef personally and he is such a cool guy, weve been out a couple of times when ive been over in LA- such a down to earth dude!....Cool video, impressive bits of kit
Educational. Thanks Mike.
Freaking awesome I love the engine building part
Thanks for video I really enjoy the details of engine building.
Awesome, Finnegan.
Would look ridiculous in LapHonda
Noonan ls next is a badass engine platform
Man, you must be a very wealthy guy! God bless you!
Absolutely love the educational videos
Keep it up please 👍🏻
How hard was it to hide that beautiful crank inside an engine. It's more artwork than any painting I own.
Great Block, Noonan The Aussie is #1 in quality,strenght,technology.. All measuring equipement is rated at 20 deg celcius for acccuracy..
Awesome engine info
That block is bee-yo-ti-ful!
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW ....THAT IS SOME BAD ASS SHIT
A work of art
Sunnen makes a dial bore gauge set up fixture. I always miked the bearing thickness with a bearing mike. A bearing mike is a one inch mike with a ball on the anvil in stead of a flat surface.
Wow. That’s going to be a work of art when completed. Can’t wait to see and hear this thing running, doesn’t matter what it’s going in.
Looks like you’re going to need to sell a lot of swag to fund this project 😂😀🇺🇸
I hope the car is worthy of this spectacular LSX, that crank is absolute art…
Great episode!
What a beautiful block, man I would be nerved working on it. Very confusing & informative. Lol
another great video, mike!
Not sure which is more beautiful, the block or the crank!🤤🤤
Knowing your past love for mini trucks, this has to go in one. S10 would be too normal so im thinking a yota mini truck. Cant wait for this build.
Nothing better than a billet Chevrolet!! 😍😍😍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💪💪💪
Great content thanks for sharing
i had read somewhere that ACE did Westberg's engines ( sick the mag?) but didn't know anything else about them. How about some history on this fellow and his business. Everyone with LS's seems to fit head gasket issues but Westberg was running high boost successfully. This is interesting. Great video. Many thanks Mike.
topfuel hoops fixed that issues
He mentioned it in this video.
@@NurMuhammad-mo6ki - And more head bolts per cylinder vs stock LS 4.
Great info!
thanks mike that was very interesting
As a pro in measuring bizz,I can tell you that 20 deg celsius is the standard temp to measure parts. There are rules of tumb like for cast iron 1 degree causes 1 hundredth of millimeter per 100 cm growth.
I really enjoy this channel! All the ppl I watch tend to have some sort of horse power!
That crank is crazy.
Good use of the measuring tools. A micrometer or calipers are for measuring. A dial is for comparing a set value (there are exceptions).
Good stuff.
My Lord man… this level of precision and dedication to detail is bordering on insane, measurements to half a thou, those giant, billet main caps at big block spec… That crankshaft is nothing short of billet perfection. Now I see why these bullets can spin north of 10k revs and hang together. And now Mr. Finnegan has us all slobbering to see what this unit is powering… I’m really hoping that he doesn’t keep us in suspense for long.
It’s a Lexus
Wow such beautiful eye candy for car guys. But I can’t help thinking about the serious coin that all costs. 😮
Kind of ironic given Mike's rise to fame in the (anti-big dollar) Roadkill show
That corvette will fly with that LS cleveland ! lamo Great video Finn ! peace and love brother !
Very interesting project. Cool info about the block with a nice explanation of how to measure and set set bearing clearances.. The two piece thrust bearing has to be a giant pain in the butt. Surprised they don't use a 5 piece one in a custom billet block .
Wondering how you'll keep a head gasket in it though.
Hoping the engine goes in the bed of a Mazda pick up truck.
Thanks, very interesting info ;)
Alright time to get the caddy done !!! I can't wait to see this build ! I'm thinking it's a mopar maybe a charger or a drag truck?!?!
I'm thinking mk4
Holy crap - that block is prolly worth more than all my old trucks combined.
Bare block is $13K.
Informative video
I remember street racing out in Antioch California in 81' in that huge empty housing track. There was a guy with a 1972 Camaro that was smoking everyone one night. He had a Donovan small block all aluminum and was very fast. I believe in aluminum blocks for sure.
Your the best Finn
Noice video Mike, thanks, I was having the DT's last weekend with no FSM video!
So it's a mustang? Should be fun. It's a shame the Vette didn't work out but I'm sure with your contacts you'll be able to build a car that fits you and can go 6s. Can't wait to see it. 2024 is gonna be a busy year for you
Could be a Mopar also. Could also be older GM. Or…
Could be an import....
Absolutely beautiful engine coming together here !
I’m surprised no Torrington bears for the thrust behind #1 main cap to aid in thrust on a big engine like this
way cool!!!!!!That engine must cost a pretty penny.
20 degrees Celcius is usually what try to maintain in the shops I’ve worked (watches and altimeters in Switzerland).
What’s important is keeping the measuring tools and measured parts long enough in the same room. Being careful as well not to hold the measuring tools to long in the hands.
One of the first things I learned when I was training at a machine shop, don't hold measuring tools too long.
Not a cheap build....good video...
Oo! New project!?! Whatever it is, I bet it'll be EPIC! I'm gonna guess some sort of F body.
Can't wait to see the six second datsun!.
ACE is a class act, amazing shop, fantastic work ethic. I would like him to do my engines..
Damn fine looking jewelry!
Agreed the most beautiful thing I ever seen get down on your bad self
Built tough by doing Ford Stuff and the fact he uses old school white lubriplate engine assembly grease hell yeah!!
Thinking Fox body!
