    • @jackwaycombe

I live in rural southern Scotland. As far as TV goes, we effectively have no local news services. We used to have Border Television - from Carlisle. A broadcasting service so crap that when people were bidding millions for services like Granada, no-one at all bid a penny for them. Eventually subsumed into Tyne Tees TV, which essentially meant it disappeared.
We've had murders here we'd never have known about if it wasn't for an enthusiastic (commercial) local radio station. We're officially covered by BBC Scotland - but that coverage is such a joke I've had to point my aerial towards Northumberland to get a signal.
ITV? Fine if you don't mind 5 minutes of advertising for every 10 minutes of viewing. And you can still whistle for any news that doesn't involve Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Even streaming is problematic. Where I live, 30 mb/s is the best any provider can offer. The spinning circle on my screen suggests we're not getting even that most of the time. My son lives further out, and has had to resort to satellite Internet despite living one mile away from a 'full fibre' box.
My point being that not everyone has a serious choice to avoid broadcast TV. But that broadcast TV is so crap, most people here view the licence fee the same way people used to regard the Window Tax - a charge for services ill--provided..

A number of readers admitted they don't have a TV licence. That's badly worded, it makes it sound like wrongdoing. Replace the word with: said, and it sounds different.

So, in a Spanish hospital car park, you don't have to park in one of the spaces and you can park in the middle of the road without getting clamped. I bet there are no parking charges either. Imagine what would happen in the UK if you did that, or parked with a wheel slightly over one of the lines of a parking space.

As far as I know, if you have a small shop and you have a radio playing in it, then the BBC wants you to pay a license for your radio. I am surprised they are not trying to make us pay for using our mobile phones.

Just a thought. Why is it that UKTV Gold is only available if you subscribe to Sky tv etc. So not right as its owned by the BBC and shows programs that the public have already paid good money for with the so called licence con..Plus all the other UKTV Channels like Dave and Yesterday that also shows BBC programs..
Love watching your updates on what the Nasty BBC are up to..

I love Blackpool. I was there last year for a weekend and it’s an economically challenged area. People there can’t afford the TV licence anyway. It’s not a hard decision to pay a tenner a month for a streaming service instead of a tenner a month for the TV licence - you’d get more value for money paying for Netflix than watching BBC content. It’s amazing how better you feel without watching depressing EastEnders every day.

The de-regionalisation of radio is similar to how they amalgamated regional television, not that many years ago. No longer is there any localised flavour to broadcasts that cater to the people within certain areas who actually listen to/watch and felt that the broadcaster had a genuine interest in what was going on in their area. Instead it's all been homogenised into a bland, centralised, faceless corporate entity with no favour at all. For no other reason than them wanting to maintain the astronomical salaries of the, 'super star', main presenters and make even more money than they're already doing through their private enterprises that are funded with public money. Nothing but a publicly-funded scam that benefits a small handful of elites at the top of the dung-heap commonly known as the BBC.

the oxford cuts began with the bbc south today oxford programme been cut in december 2022, it was a disgrace to take away a service for oxfordshire, cotswolds, milton keynes, bucks, berks, northampton, luton, bedford etc and say run all this from southampton, and cover the i.o.w/portsmouth etc-- similarly look east lost cambridge, all news for the east is from norwich and covers 150 miles from the norfolk coast right back to milton keynes (in the opposite direction oxford covered)- how on earth is there relevance of news from great yarmouth being read out in northampton or milton keynes news being heard in tilbury or shoeburyness its geographically insane
