      So you've never received sick pay, then?
      I expect it's in his contract, which can be messy things to extricate yourself from. I think maybe the BBC should learn how to negotiate better contracts. But don't hold people to standards you yourself can't meet: we've _all_ been paid for not working at some point in our careers.

    • @winifredrobinson5132
      @winifredrobinson5132 Před 2 měsíci +17

      @@dizwellNot been paid half a million pounds for being off work for a whole year! Funny he didn't have "mental health issues" until the allegations. Plus it's outrageous to be paid so much from the licence fee to someone for "Reading out Loud" for goodness sake!
      I wonder, do you work for the BBC by chance?

    • @dizwell
      @dizwell Před 2 měsíci

      @@winifredrobinson5132 No, I'm retired. And I don't pay the TV licence. And I don't receive state pension nor any other state benefit.
      Of course you haven't been paid half a million quid for being off work. Neither have I. But if that's what his contract says, that's what happens.
      The scale of the payment is in any case irrelevant to the point I was making. We've all been paid for not working at some point. The quantum of cash we've been paid at such times doesn't change the principle involved: if you're sick, you still get paid.
      In all the jobs I ever had, if I'd been sick for a long time, the company could bring in their own doctor for an assessment. After more time off, they could move to dismiss. These are the rules that no doubt apply to Huw just as much as they ever applied to me or you... and they completely refute the suggestion that "if he doesn't work, he shouldn't be paid", which was the proposition I was replying to.
      In passing, it isn't a good look going around accusing people of things, just because you don't like what they say. Resorting to the "do you work for the BBC" line displays an inability to reason or debate on your part, basically. Aim higher.
      Likewise, complaining that all Huw ever did was "read a teleprompter" is an appeal to ignorance: he did far more than that (narrating the queen's funeral, for example) and even reading a teleprompter requires a set of skills that I certainly don't possess. If it was trivially easy, Mandy from Maldon would be doing it for fifty knicker a night.

    • @garylovell6017
      @garylovell6017 Před 2 měsíci +5

      When was he ever working? Too many people these days (And It has been like this for a long time) have absolutely no concept of what real work entails. Sitting down and talking Is work? NO IT ISN'T.

    • @dizwell
      @dizwell Před 2 měsíci +1

      @garylovell6017 Of course it's "real work", whatever that phrase is meant to mean. No, it's not bricklaying or truck driving, but it's apparently worth nearly half a million to someone, so it's real enough.
      I personally think that playing Mother Goose at the Christmas panto isn't exactly _useful_ work ...and how hard is it to memorise some lines and recite them, badly, anyway?! But I'm not going to dismiss it as "not real work", just because I have no idea of the actual effort and skillset involved.
      A moment at Wikipedia tells me Huw Edwards has a degree in mediaeval French along with a PhD and was a professional journalist long before he took up the teleprompter. And his narration and handling of the queen's funeral demonstrated to me, at least, a reasonable degree of journalistic and literary competence.
      I assume the BBC concluded that _that_ and a tendency *not* to, like, umm and, errr, you know, like, ummm are skills worth paying for.

      MOD is "a little different" I think. They are posted around the world in their jobs relating to the protection and defence of this country. As a result, their children need a stable education.
      H/E reads out aloud for a living on half a million pounds a year, sitting down in a comfy chair in a studio in this country with a camera pointing at him!! All paid for by the licence fee.
      In return, the public receive lots of rubbish BBC programmes and more repeats than ever before. The standard of programming is appalling and has declined continually for at least the last two decades.
      What has increased however, is of course the BBC Licence fee and the huge salaries paid to many of their under talented "stars", such as people reading out loud or someone who is paid three times H/E's salary as Gary Lineka for talking football!!!!!

    I got another threating letter from TV License UK last week, it's just addressed to 'the householder', it was the same as the one I got a month ago and 3 working days after that one I had a random suspicious call from a Sky Engineer - I asked before and no-one replied but do you think that Sky Engineers also get contracts to check up on people or maybe this one had two jobs (one being TV License inspector) ? I caught him and his van on the door bell cam but I never answered.

      I would imagine the BBC would certainly consider partnering up with another organisation to spy on addresses not paying the licence fee. Sky would make sense. The Post Office perhaps. Meter readers maybe. Don't let anyone in, and if they do somehow get in lock them up in the cellar.

    It has to be breaking one of the human rights laws??
    They shouldn’t be allowed to dictate what people can watch in a free world .
