    Adding the ability to reverse would be a big change, because the neural net may decide to back up at any given point (we know how random Beta is at times), so the reversing capability needs to be trained very carefully

    • @SteveBakerIsHere
      @SteveBakerIsHere Před rokem +8

      It's worth mentioning - that the AI could potentially drive in reverse just as easily as it can drive forwards...and since an electric car has no gearbox - it's theoretically capable of driving at 140mph in reverse (it's software limited - so it doesn't - but the AI could override those limits!). But there could come a time in the future where being able to drive at freeway speeds in reverse would be useful! 🙂

    • @tcfs
      @tcfs Před rokem +12

      @@SteveBakerIsHere I doubt that. The forward facing cameras are more capable than the rear one. The rear camera wouldn't be able to handle high speed driving which requires long-distance cameras to predict the environment.

  • @danielmewes
    @danielmewes Před rokem +20

    Going to fast in residential areas with narrow streets has been one of the most consistent issues I've had with 10.69.2. Great to see that 10.69.3 improves upon it in that regard!

    • @SteveBakerIsHere
      @SteveBakerIsHere Před rokem +6

      One problem with slowdowns in tight areas is that you're sitting in the left seat - and the AI is "sitting" in the middle of the car. That means that when YOU can see around a tight right-hand turn, it CANNOT...In playing with FSD beta myself - think a lot of the annoying slow-downs are like that - tight RIGHT HAND bends - and a lot of the seemingly reckless driving is on tight LEFT HAND bends - where you (the driver) can't see anything - but the AI can.

    • @danielmewes
      @danielmewes Před rokem +2

      @@SteveBakerIsHere I've been wondering about that as well, and it's well possible that it can see a bit better around some of the turns than I can. But then again it can't see behind a parked car, and we frequently have children playing on the road in my neighborhood who could step on the street unexpectedly from behind a car and it still wants to go 25.

    • @SteveBakerIsHere
      @SteveBakerIsHere Před rokem +3

      @@danielmewes Yeah - we place the steering wheel on the left side of the car in countries where we drive on the right - and on the right side of the car in places where we drive on the left. On a two lane road - that helps to keep the driver as close as possible to the center of the road - giving roughly equal visibility on left and right-hand corners. Placing Tesla's cameras on the back of the rearview mirror negates some of that benefit. But on a single lane road (or a wider road that's narrowed by parked cars) the problem is greatly magnified.

    • @StefanSteinerWA
      @StefanSteinerWA Před rokem

      @@SteveBakerIsHere great explanation! I imagine having cameras on the left and right pillars facing forward would offer better turning experiences.
      Also, I notice in a lot of right turns, esp on hilly two lane roads, FSD beta likes to get too close to the center line and in some cases crosses over. It frustrates me, especially when traffic is coming in the other lane. I don’t chance it and take control. Even if it would correct in time, it makes the oncoming traffic think I’m a bad driver. I don’t think it’s a matter of needing the pillar cameras to solve it but FSD needs to adjust better based on how sharp the corner is. It can use its side cameras to track how close it gets to the center line and adjust better. It’s my biggest complaint.

    I don’t live in the Berkeley Hills, but I drive 1-2 times per month and definitely agree with all comments you’ve made. So, whenever I hear FSD testers talk about wanting Beta to accelerate and drive faster in iffy situations, I realize they live in relatively flat, less populated areas than many urban/suburban environments. FSD is getting much, much better, but it still has a long ways to go. Slow, steady and safe will definitely help win the Autonomous Driving race.

    My take is that FSD's perception & planning abilities are better than prior releases, but as it is a major update, they have set the "caution" threshold quite high. It will be relaxed and thus allowed to proceed more assertively with point releases -- or maybe even over-the-air parameter adjustment without an update.

    At 6:45 I'll bet the reason for the stop/slow down was because of the orange reflectors on the utility pole. My car changes lanes EVERY TIME it sees orange anywhere close to the road. On my commute home there are some permanent orange PVC posts in the ground about 4 feet off of the road that mark buried utility lines. FSD beta changes lanes saying 'changing lanes to avoid obstructions' (or something of that sort) even if it cuts off a car overtaking in the left lane.

Here, around Olympia, WA, updates over the last half a year have only made things worse, and it has MAJOR problems; Dropping out of FSD on the highway, with no warning of any kind, silently drifting into traffic in the adjacent lane, trying to drive into curbs, completely unable to handle small roundabouts, ignoring stop signs, etc. It's getting really depressing. Seems they're ignoring my area completely.

    If you want to really challenge the AI, you should drive up Durant Ave from Telegraph in the evening during prime door dash hours. It's three lanes one way with parking on each side. In the evening many people (not just door dashers) routinely double park in the #1 and #3 lanes, leaving one lane for people to drive through, with pedestrians jaywalking through that one lane all up and down the block. It's hell for everybody!
    If the Berkeley hills are worth the trek from wherever you are, it's also worth sticking around until Durant Ave heats up in the evening. I'm curious to see how the AI handles such lawlessness, lol! Make sure to truly have your hands ready to take the wheel and your foot ready to slam the brake just in case!

    How do you get the special effect of the rear camera appearing to hover like a drone? Btw, absolutely excellent episode on FSD... the ability of the NN to display 'judgement' is amazing, to say the least. Enjoyed your commentary... have a lot of respect and appreciation for the effort you put into testing and documenting your driving experience. I have a CyberTruck on order (~200k on the waiting list) with FSD, of course. Cannot wait!! SoCalFreddy

      It's a special type of camera that (as Raj said) has a really long selfie stick. However, it's designed to filter this selfie stick out of the footage so it appears to float. I don't know which one he uses, but look up the "Insta360 One X" if you want to see one of them. :)

    You mentioned fsd doesnt reverse but I had fsd shift into reverse actually on my last drive.
    I imagine it felt it was in a serious enough situation to do it in a safety conscious way though.
    I pulled up to a light for a left turn and accidently tapped the accelerator as I was shifting in my seat and fsd lurked forward at the red light and then imediately shifted into reverse to correct my mistake and then shifted back into drive, this did mess up the turn and sat there waiting for a confirmation to proceed after it was green. I had to disable and re-enable fsd to get it out of that stuck state.
    So I think it is possible but it's got to really know it in a bad situation to do it

    Comma's OpenPilot will let you test in those environments, and OpenPilot is almost fully end-to-end with zero maps data being used for handling these situations.

      @@AIDRIVR It's pretty early days for them, so it's not impressive yet. They just started working on their end-to-end longitudinal control about a year ago. And recently got their lateral control to be end-to-end as well.
      I haven't seen anyone try something like that road yet, but there is nothing stopping someone from trying it.
      I'd try on mine, but my car is manual so I need to take over under 20km/h. If only I bought an auto. 😅

    (I'm surprised a "giant bus" is down here at all). That looks like one of those disability transit bus. When I had to go to rehab, I had a bus like that get me. I live (15-20) minutes from city limits in WV. That bus (disability transit) will go basically everywhere. And school buses also (and those school buses are a whole lot bigger).

    True that autonomous cars can react quicker than humans but I agree with you as you said yourself that slow and steady feels more relaxing than slamming on the brakes too suddenly

    There's one intersection on my drive home, a + intersection with the cross slanted with the left side further out than the right, that I will always evaluate FSD beta on. All lanes are visible. As long as Beta keeps trying to put me practically into the right-most lane of the cross left-to-right traffic, it's an instant failure.

    So what’s very odd to me is fsd beta/autopilot cannot make u turns/ reverse but smart summon and summon can ???? Like when nobody’s in the car it navigates by itself around parking lots but not while in drive so odd

    @6:22 "for no apparent reason". Since that parked car on the right is in the shade, perhaps the one headlight that appears on suggests to the FSD that it is about to pull out. That would be a good reason to apply caution. IMHO.

    Dont make a separate clips channel! It was good advice a few months ago, but CZcams recently added the new "Shorts" tab, so your shorts arent mixed up with your normal content. I would suggest posting clips as shorts and then uploading as usual. Just a suggestion, though. (From what my understanding of the algorithm is)

    I have a model S 2020 with F.S.D Beta and I love it when it first released but after 10 update I start to hate how the car acting like 90 year old driver. It braking more and wondering too much it make people sittiing the car dizzy it only good on the highway with direction but back road in the city it is getting very hard to drive. I am not sure if the vision getting old and see thing different than whne it new ir the ldriving law getting harder and the car getting slow down to think. I still love my model S with FREE charge for life.
    Good video.

    I think the car perfectly fine, though it drives kinda slow and yeah as you said "gives more space to the oncoming car" and that principle all the time, during some circumstances there is enough space for both cars. And Tesla FSD really makes me impatient.
