Growing up in a suburb 20 minutes away from the city, there were many people who in high school would refuse to drive to San Francisco. Being one of the few people in my friend group who wasn’t afraid to drive in the city at all meant I was almost always driving when we went to the city. But driving in rush hour traffic on so many streets can be difficult. Kearny, Bush, Montgomery, Stockton, Broadway, Geary and Van Ness are always jammed, or at least they were before the pandemic

4:54 I think this is the usual high caution setting they do with major (and even not so major revisions). I think they tend to set caution high, gather data, and lower the caution setting with the next point release, or maybe they can change that parameter over the air without a software update. Honestly though, that predictive ability on the cyclist is impressive. I don't think I would even have noticed them. As far as sudden hard braking causing problems for cars behind you, it's planner almost certainly takes that into account. I've yet to see an FSD beta video where the car brake with a following car close behind. _Theory:_ that may even be one of the big factors that determines how smoothly it deals with these kinds of situations -- if no one is behind you to rear-end you, then it is more likely to brake hard and over-cautiously, but if someone is close behind it factors that in and does a more smooth cautious slowdown. Might be an interesting thing for you to pay attention to and see if it bears out. But also question: _For you, has FSD ever hit the brakes too hard/overcautiously while another car was actually following too close behind?_ [edit: and then at 6:25 you say precisely this... although... were you _really_ almost rear ended there? Doesn't seem like your or the car behind were going fast enough for that braking to be excessively risky. Annoying, yes, and a bit more risky than necessary, but not excessively risky]

I can totally relate to the "human condition" as a major hurdle towards being comfortable in a self driving car.
I don't have a self driving vehicle myself, but even driving something with radar cruise control is enough to realize how impatient people can get, how complex driving is and the risks we consider acceptable during the every day commute.
Radar cruise control typically maintains a larger following distance than most drivers. It doesn't take long for others to want to tailgate or cut you off, even though all you are doing is maintaining a safe distance in traffic.
I think if there was a away to make it readily apparent to other motorists that a vehicle is operating in an autonomous mode, maybe people would have more patience. Much like I would hope most drivers have more patience with students learning to drive.

I like the extra effort you put into the editing of these videos. I wonder if the more manic switching between lanes is one of the first implementations of the language of lanes concept? If i understand correctly, it would cause the car to select a lane as opposed to splitting between them. I'm not sure the exact timeline though, it may have already been implemented.

  • @Discoducky73
    @Discoducky73 Před rokem +2

Great video and I'll add my feedback
1:32 FSD improperly calculates that it can overtake the bus as it is showing the blue box and the bus is about the same size as the box. Seems like many things are failing here. FSD wants to overtake, but can't as the bus is crossing the lane line causing FSD to slow down, then FSD is now in a short deadline turn situation. Neural planner should have used the space behind the bus to merge.
4:25 Great example of the new VRU kinematic update. While a bit overcautious, ped was walking into the crosswalk before realizing it wasn't their turn. Then FSD kinematics notice the ped has stopped and starts to make its turn.
4:41 And an example of where the VRU kinematics can be way overly cautious.
4:55 And another. This will get much better as both of these VRUs had high crossing velocity.
5:38 FSD neural planner should have planned a path to the right lane. Data engine needs to classify the vehicle correctly as "stopped_not_waiting_for_traffic" so that the neural planner can immediately plan a path around the vehicle. Also, data engine can assume the VRU is with the stopped vehicle as the back door is opened by the VRU.
6:50 Lanes net really needs to improve to ensure that FSD is in the correct lane for short deadline "ONLY" marked lanes
7:59 Lanes net issue again as it doesn't classify the right most lane as a full lane AND doesn't classify both lanes from the lane markings
9:33 Neural planner issue, notice the blue line curves close to the oncoming car. The planned path does not give FSD enough room spatially with the current planned path.
11:20 Lanes net issue as it doesn't seem to know in advance that both lanes are right turn ONLY.
11:36 Lanes net issue where it incorrectly sees a double yellow
11:57 Data engine issue where it does not classify the car soon enough that it is in the process of backing up to park.
12:15 Lanes net issue as it should have classified that lane as not an option for the neural planner
12:34 Lane connectivity graph (also lanes net) as it should know this intersection is controlled by a traffic light.

6:28 This stretch of Stockton between Broadway and Sutter is one of the most difficult roads in the country to drive on in rush hour. I think it did pretty well with that turn. It took me years to be able to drive that stretch confidently. All the thousands of pedestrians, multitude of cars trying to park, trucks unloading and tons of busses.

I love your videos, but there's a few things that caught my eye that most probably did not catch at first glance. First of all, that steering wheel is not a Tesla manufactured steering wheel; but rather the one designed by MobileDie in conjunction with Tesla manufactured equipment. Take notice that you can see the original manufacture design, whilst seeing clear fabrication to the top and bottom. This is to help ensure that the circumference of the square root of the apex meets the same engineering standard as originally designed.
You'll notice, as well, that this update allows the vehicle to see further using only camera's, but it is also able to see through solid material as well. This is due to the elaborate use of realtime satellite imaging from the Tesla network which allows for the seemless transition of both the music playlist and your favorite CZcams channel (AI DRIVR of course).
You'll also notice that the camera's assist with the elimination of phantom braking around bicyclists by capturing the smile of a small child, similar to the midnight moon. This is all made possible by the frequency of a doorknob passing through the light of an appendix. Though there's a lot of rice on the escalator, I think we can all agree that the power of a sock on a horseshoe will never reach the capacity of a nail screwed into an ironing board.

General comment on caution vs assertiveness: two major reasons for excessive caution are (1) it doesn't yet understand everything it sees with high enough confidence: if there is uncertainty about the speed of a crossing pedestrian, the position of a car, or the presence of an object, it has to act according to the worst-case scenario within the range of possibilities. (2) Tesla is going to keep the caution level high to absolutely minimize the chance of a serious accident in the beta program. As further improvements to the AI decrease perception uncertainty they can afford a narrower margin of error, and it can be more assertive in the kinds of situations a human would, while also being much safer.

@@AIDRIVR Just make sure to not forget about the 80:20 rule. 80% of the effort is done in 20% of the time. The last 20% take 80% of the time. Getting it back is the first thing I do every time I activate FSD Beta & the car hides my apps on each side of the dash. I like the full screen view in FSD Beta because even after bringing back the power meter I can still see vehicles, etc in the background
