No. Everything shown in the film should serve the film itself. Porn is like a worse version of showing action for action's sake. A kiss in a film could tell a great deal about a story and its characters, but it's completely unnecessary to show any genitalia in a sex scene.

Shortbus, the second feature by John Cameron Mitchell, who did the absolutely brilliant Hedwig and the Angry Itch, is a film that both has a strong narrative and is pornography. I wouldn’t call it a great film, but my god is it interesting.

I’m ok that porn isn’t classed as cinema and that cinema isn’t classed as porn ….. but we live in some crazy times and anything can happen, I mean heck a corrupt businessman and game show host became President …..

If the sex scenes serve a porpoise, but even without them the film is a good film, then yes. Example, Bible Black H anime.
This was fast. And while "adult films" are most of the times just nudity on screen, try these titles:
- Nekromantik (1988)
- Elke (1995)
- Madame Hollywood (2002)
- The Bare Wench Prject (this is a sereis of movies, doing the same story over and over with slight iterations. Pick your favourite and stick to that.)
There was also a Monique Parent flick where she played a woman hunted by a serial killer, gets police protection etc. - turns out she is the killer. If someone knows the title, please tell me.

There's a German short film called "Hotel Desire", directed by Sergej Moya which is a beautiful little film that is artistic, has a plot, and an emotional payoff that also contains unsimulated sex.

My favorite film to feature full penetration scenes is Thriller: A Cruel Picture (Sweeden, 1973). I think p0rn can be cinema. It just happens to be a genre where little to no effort can turn a relatively massive profit, so it was co-opted/dominated by non-artists cranking out cheap trash, exponentially compounded by the rise of cheap video cameras. It happened to horror as well, just to a lesser extent. Super interesting topic, Marcus. You never fail to surprise me. Cheers, mate.

I would say, depends on the movie. You mentioned I Am Curious (Yellow) - which is more softcore erotica - that was a very decent movie, and certainly had artistic merit. Some of the other high-end golden era titles, especially, I would argue, the films of Radley Metzger - I would lightly count as cinema.
