I agree with all of these except Margot Robbie she's a great actress and also was behind Barbie which is a massive financial success but Babylon was an incredible movie and the suicide squad remake was actually decent. I don't think a film being profitable should be the basis of arguing a film is bad.
I personally didn't like Babylon as much as I thought I would have. It just felt so bloated and inconsistent in terms of quality with the only thing holding the film together being the great performances of everyone in it including Margot Robbie. Barbie was alot more enjoyable for me since it was self aware and consistent in its quality plus it had Ryan Gosling in it I mean what more could I say. Also I agree cause some great movies aren't always profitable unfortunately like Nice Guys or Blade Runner 2049 but there's people who usually regard profitability to be a contributing factor to the film's quality which isn't always the case.
My man Adam Driver is just trying to speedrun acting in a lot of flicks by the old masters, they may not be at the top of their game these days, but can you blame him?
As an actor myself, it’s incredibly hard to think of telling a writer/director “hey that movie you just pitched…let me change it up” like I’d never tell them they should change a movie if I just didn’t agree with it. I’d just not agree to do it.
Not sure what the takeaway is. If I'm curious about an upcoming film and wondering if I should see, then notice it has Christian Bale, does that mean I should lower my estimate of how much I'd enjoy it? Even if so, mixing bad critical responses with bad box office results in judging recent filmographies makes the analysis even shakier. Blade Runner 2049 hurt WB dearly but I'm glad it exists and I got to see it
idk if ragebait is the right term for this but using the Will Smith oscar clip, the Tom Hanks yelling video, and an odd disdain for Ridley Scott gives me a weird vibe from him. Also going after Margot Robbie while she's on a 10 year hot streak tells me he watched the wrong youtube reviews for Barbie
I feel like you are being exceptionally cynical in this video. All of these actors have had good movies somewhat recently. Especially Margot Robbie, her last 3 movies are 8/10 or higher for me (Babylon 9, Asteroid City 9, Barbie 8). Adam Driver is one of the best actors to pop up in recent years, he's awesome even in bad movies (which The Last Duel is not). And clearly you didn't watch Idris Elba in The Harder They Fall because that movie rocks
Thanks for the comment! I did indeed watch Idris Elba in The Harder they Fall. The film is good. But that's 1 film out of about 20. At a push I can give him Infinity War and Raganorok. As for Robbie, unfortunately I wasn't being subjective in the video - I was using facts. Critically and commercially the only success she had recently was Barbie, which I mention in the video! Again, thanks for the comment :)
@@MarcusFlemmings I wouldn't call that facts at all, since Asteroid City isn't considered a failure critically, most people that talk about the movie say the same thing: it's great if u like Wes Anderson, it's bad if u don't. U just clearly either don't like him or maybe missed on that nuance in your criticism.
@@user-yv2ig2wl4e The film - as per most Wes Anderson movies, did not make a profit (which is factual information) and is currently sitting at a 6.9 on IMDB. Which isn't a disaster, but isn't great. Both are facts.
@@MarcusFlemmings If you're serious about trying to portray an objective stance then you shouldn't use subjective language like "good or bad". That didn't come across at all, you should use more objective and factual terms like "commercial success or failure"
@@MarcusFlemmings Use rotten tomatoes or metacritic for critic reviews, Asteroid City is around 75% with critics and lower with audiences. Also it made $54m on a $25m budget, if you count $25m for the advertising at worst it made it's money back
To be fair if you look at the OG Harley Quinn (Arlene Sorkin) in the absolutely incredible Batman The Animated Series, Harley indeed does have a very heavy New York accent (similar to a Jersey accent).
Wes Anderson movies ain't for everyone, but then lots of people (present company excepted) have debatable taste. I personally enjoy his movies. Margot's role in Big Short & A City were cameos at best. Tom Hanks stepped in for the Anderson staple Bill Murray. That said, your basic premise stands. Some actors need to make better choices about their work. But then we should have a video on the converse, who is making the right moves? Ryan Gosling?
I think you went too hard on Margot, Tom and Adam since they are just starting their careers, Those 3 have like a decade and a half of existing. I was expecting bruce willis or malcolm mcdowell
I'm sorry what your take is? Margot Robbie is bad because she was in movies that didn't do well in box office, but what about I, Tonya, it did well she was great, not mentioned, what about Once Uppon a Time in Hollywood? Is she bad just because she did a Franchise movie to get attention being Harley Quinn? Is Emma Stone bad because she was Gwen Stacy and Cruella? And those two are comparable. And Christian Bale, is he bad because he was in a couple bad movies. Tom Holland should have waited for a good movie as has Zendaya? Zendaya killed in Challengers, that is right, but she has 2 movies besides Spider Man, which are Dune and Challengers. Tom Holland is making movies that flops, that's your point? I mean man is building his carrear getting experience in movies, why is he supposed to just wait until a Oscar Movie comes up, like he could just predict that. Finally we should avoid Tom Hanks because his last Oscar was in the 90's, dude what is the point of that, the most Oscar won by an actor was 3 in the course of 20 years, it's not like everyone has won multiple awards. You could make a list like this for several actors and actress, it would still not make sense, I could point that Anya Taylor-Joy is bad because she was in movies that did not exploded in popularity nor was nominated for nothing such as The Menu, Split, Glass, The Northman, The New Mutants, Amsterdam, Furiosa, I don't think anyone keeps saying she is bad, eventhough she has had what like one truly great movie The Witch and Dune 2, also she was in the Super Mario Movie which sold like crazy, but still she has loads of movies no doing so well. You could point Brad Pitt, you could make this argument even with Leo Di Caprio, for me your argument makes no sense and is of no value
20 or 30 years ago, people went to see movies BECAUSE of the stars. To a certain degree, actors or directors could draw in crowds, no matter the subject. I avoid Tom Cruise movies because of the characters he plays all feel like an archetype of the same characters. I avoid Mellissa McCarthy movies because I can't stand her. Well maybe not Red Heat but that's still 4 out of those 5. And yes Marcus, they are all 80's movies. Expectations have changed. In total contrast to the sameness of some actors. The ultimate Chamelion who would shapeshift into any role was Daniel Day-Lewis. I find Paul Bettany because almost unrecognisable, and although I wasn't a fan of his the late Philip Seymore Hoffman could change his mannerisms.
not going to lie I didnt understand the video. even if an actor only do flops but in the future makes one movie getting good reviews and Im interested Im not going to avoid it just because an actor. I lose interest if the lead is a criminal or a predator or something. an example, I avoid Jared Letto if he is the lead
The Last Duel is my absolute all time favourite movie. House of Gucci was great, Idris Alba in Three Thousand Years of Longing, absolutely phenomenal. So I'm watching this video... and all I hear is "bla bla bla bla bla......." woeful. Woeful video. Ragebait.
Thanks for the wholly subjective opinion on the video and on the artists' movies mentioned - however, please look at the box office and general critical response to all of those films. I don't make videos without research ;-) ps. The Last Duel is just a remake of the Japanese film Rashomon - I've seen both and Rashomon is miles better. You should watch it if you like The Last Duel.
Fuck me do I disagree with you on asteroid city. Like why do u think it's trash? Because it did poorly in the box office? So what? Some of the most fun I've had watching a film in 2023
Again, you have made another fantastic segment. Reason is, others that sort, do what you do, don't do what you do. That is, directly say what is by the fact and research on your part. Also, you don't mix words. Example of others, they will talk several segments, on a cable channel show, that is bad and keep talking about each episode, still saying it's bad. Which is a torture for me since I got their POV on the first segment they were talking about it. Also, why are they paying money for bad entertainment like cable, and movies, and whatever. Is it a tax right-off? Are they into torturing? Didn't get they get breastfed by their mother? Dropped on their head? Thank you very much for this precise episode on bad actors. I will take the advice whole-heartily.
Nah, The Last Duel was great, not sure why its box office failure matters. We were never going to get The Last Duel 2. I'm sorry to tell you.
nah its totally crap
Trust me, that's not the worst movie ever.
Remember Shawshank redemption was a big flop in the box office. Good Box office numbers doesn’t equal good movie and vice versa.✌️
True, but the films I mentioned (maybe bar Asteroid City, which I've not seen but Anderson has his fans) aren't good! Thanks for the comment!
Idris Elba is a legit kickboxer too
Yeag, dawg, but Will Smith would've been terrible in Matrix. Keanu had that perfect look of perpetual disbelief throughout the 1st movie.
Imagining a wise-cracking, fast talking Neo makes me vomit in my mouth.
Keanu: Whoa
Will: AWW HELL NAW!
