  • Unique opportunity to compare side by side while they are in my collection. Selling off the Athearn after this video.

Great review. Motor noise is a big issue for me. I have an Athearn GP9 that I had to put a Kato motor into it was that bad. Atlas Master are quiet, but I had two Atlas Classic that were really noisy. I have an Athearn Genesis 2.0 SD90MAC that is a quiet runner, so hopefully Athearn is phasing out their noisy motors. ScaleTrains and Walthers Proto are great and quiet runners too. I had a poor experience with Broadway Limited (my first sound locomotive no less), so they are on my pay no mind list.

I just got a Broadway Challenger too. It started failing after only a day. I've been searching around, and maybe the 16v on both my Bachmann E-Z Command and Piko Smartcontroller is too much for the challenger to handle. What DCC controller system do you use? And what's its voltage?

Im running 13.7 volts on esu ecos....16 seems a bit much

@@RodimusPrime thank you. Strange, though. I thought the Piko Smartcontrol system was basically a re-branded esu ecos. Not sure why they use a different voltage. Thanks for the reply!

Did you smoke Deflectors come mounted to you're engine or did you have to install them? And is there a part number for left and right?
    Thank you

My Lionel Challenger has a QSI decoder installed at the factory. I have never heard of a Lionel coming equipped with an MRC decoder.
