I hear the difference I would like that 150 year anniversary one but i like the Mth sound a little better it doesnt have the reverberating sound like the athearn maybe because of a plastic shell versus diecast . My lionel ho challengers are awesome but i enjoy my athearns just as well
Gotta admit Soundtraxx is making progress. Their recordings for this locomotive are really good now. Looked up this video since I was curious how the n scale model might sound. Shame I missed out on buying one, but hopefully I can pick up a less popular road number after they are released.
That is an interesting comparison between the MTH and Athearn Genesis big boy models ; too bad that the Athearn big boy model body isn't diecast unlike the MTH and BLI models are.
i agree with your assessment , the light package on the MTH as always is complete, but also my major complaint is how bright the number board is on 4014 , and you can not see the numbers
@@SensaSean spoke to soundtraxx today the only way to turn down the light is to open it up and put resistors on the wires going to the number board lights
I too ordered this loco. Big disappointment on detail for price. The firebox flicker is a nice feature, but the BLI at least has working marker lights and populated cab.
@@kdtrproductions4983 ok. Give me a bit, trying to find the back EMF CV number. Because it sounds like its got a really high start voltage for some odd reason. Mine did the same thing when I brought it over to another layout.
@@HoboHeaven the Athearn isn't as accurate as the BLI version. However, the Athearn will run a lot better. I dont really care for the smoking whistle. The smoke fluid leaves residue on my track, which isn't easy to clean off. Sound? It sounds exactly the same as all the other articulated steamers from BLI. Paragon3 isn't great like a lot of people say it is. I've had more issues with Paragon3 than Protosound3.0. Athearn is using old molds for this version of the Big Boy. They didn't really retool it or make it better. Same mold, higher price. As for smoke, you can add smoke units to the Athearn one. Will I? No.
@@SensaSean here in Germany the BLI cost €769 and the Athearn €840. yes Euro!!! I ordered the BLI but must sent it back to my dealer because the smoke doesn’t work and it smells burned. I will see what BLI says. Sure Smoke Fluid is really annoying. For me, I think it’s ok, it’s my 1st US Loco, normally I collect Deutsche Bundesbahn. Can’t wait to get the BB back and I also ordered some Streamliners from Walthers Proto.
I'm very happy with my Athearn Genesis Big Boy. The most cars I've pulled with it is 41 intermodal cars with no problem. It's a nice strong locomotive
Thank you for showing us your video sean! I really liked your model big boy from athearn and your layout.
Still a great looking and sounding locomotive. Thanks for sharing. Dave
awesome locomotive...runs & sounds great..thx 4 sharing..vinny
Probably brand name that your buying. I already miss MTH
I always saw the Athearn Genesis to be the PC, where as the Mth or BLI would be the Mac.
Thanks for taking the time and sharing your review. Regarding the engine...really appreciate your honesty, is what it is...oh well.
Great model for what it is, just was expecting more for the price.

They can be turned down by some CVs, not sure which they are. But yeah, they are too bright.
@@SensaSean the issue is since their are connected directly to track power , then thier no adjusting them from what I seen so far

@@alfredoescalante7418 thanks for the info. I may put resistors on em. But I do like em bright. At least they are noticeable.

Mine cant seem to move. Could you help me out?
Do the sounds play? Lights are on?
Yeah the lighting is good, tender is wired, and the sounds work perfectly fine

That is correct

Sound wise? Yes. Accuracy? No
