    Watching all these reviews really makes me happy I’m in O scale. HO gets the detail more prototypical but nothing can touch the sound of Lionel legacy rail sounds

    • @bchobbies
      @bchobbies  Před 2 lety +2

      Lionel does have some nice sound systems. Sound in HO is somewhat limited because speakers small enough to fit in HO trains have trouble with low frequencies. There are ways around this (such as Broadway Limited's "Rolling Thunder" system, which plays the bass frequencies through a subwoofer under the layout and the higher frequencies through the locomotive itself), but in general, the larger the scale, the better the onboard sound will be.

    I have this engine but it's the 4006 and it's not only my favorite engine in my collection but it's also like my child, my holy grail, if you touch it you can say goodbye to your hand.

    What a cool model, thanks for showing it off! I rode behind 4014 when it pulled our RailGiants excursion up Cajon Pass to Barstow in 2019.

    Fantastic review! Love your editing and narration! My MTH HO steam locomotives don’t move on DC either. Just sound, lights and smoke. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @bchobbies

      Thanks! Since posting this, I've learned that some dual-mode DCC decoders have DC mode disabled by default, and it needs to be activated by changing one of the DCC settings. I'd guess that's what happened with this one, and possibly also yours (although I don't know if MTH decoders are dual-mode or not.)

    • @bchobbies
      @bchobbies  Před 3 lety

      Those are Athearn/Roundhouse 50' Overland coaches. I bought them about 11 years ago as a four-car set. They're out of production now, but used ones turn up occasionally for sale. Your best shot at finding some is probably eBay.

    Hey Michelle about the the west port and shelter cove railway the bachmann 2-8-0 actually has its own candy tender don’t know if it’s smaller than the tender you have on your 2-8-0.

    • @michaelramsey81
      @michaelramsey81 Před 3 lety +1

      I've seen those! I believe they're the same length as the standard tender, though. I've ordered a short Vanderbilt tender from the Bachmann parts department - whenever the weather is good enough for painting, I'll finish the loco and make a video about it.

      @@michaelramsey81 hey mike maybe if that doesn’t work maybe use a bachmann 2-6-0 tender. Maybe that will work. I mean it has the electronics but the vandy tender Idk how you will put the electronics inside if it. Just saying this for an alternate solution

    • @michaelramsey81
      @michaelramsey81 Před 3 lety

      @@warbabyproductions That's a possibility as well. I do have one - I'm currently using it for my Spectrum 4-6-0. I think the Vandy will be fine, though - it looks like there's enough space for the circuit board inside the oil bunker. If not, I can hardwire it to eliminate the circuit board entirely.

  • @girijashankarsundaresan

    Did you figure out how to get this moving on a DC tracks? Else I will have to buy an NCE starter kit.

    • @bchobbies
      @bchobbies  Před 3 lety +1

      I wasn't able to get it to run on DC. It might have been something I did wrong - the manual says it should be able to run on DC. I do recommend getting an NCE system either way, though. Most of the sound functions are only accessible using a DCC system.

      @girijashankarsundaresan Před 3 lety

      @@bchobbies Mike. How do I get in touch with you?

    • @bchobbies
      @bchobbies  Před 3 lety

      @@girijashankarsundaresan The NCE system does not have a DC mode. The easiest thing to do is just use the NCE system for the Big Boy and a DC transformer for your other locos. You could also install DCC decoders in your other locos, and then you'd be able to run them all independently on one layout.

    This is an impressive model of the UP Big Boy, too bad the locomotive shell body isn't made of die cast metal unlike the MTH and Broadway Limited models of their Big Boys.

    • @therailfanman2078

    Does it take smoke fluid

    • @bchobbies
      @bchobbies  Před 2 lety

      Nope, the Athearn version doesn't have a smoke unit. Broadway Limited also makes an HO scale Big Boy, and that one does have smoke.

  • @tommyt329
    @tommyt329 Před 2 lety +1

    This version isn't very accurate to the real 4014. Eg: there's only 1 dynamo on the model, the pilot wheels are meant to be black, the external taps are black not red and the cylinder covers are silver not black.

      Since it's not the subject of the review, I didn't want to draw attention to it. Don't worry - one of these days we'll do a review of an 844 model and it will get the red-carpet treatment it deserves.
