MTH wins on motor control and sound but the gap is certainly narrowed vs previous BLI sound packages. BLI wins on everything else especially detail and pull power

I would not recommend these, they dont run well out of the box and short of replacing the trucks and wheelsets I dont see how they will run well. The added cost of doing so puts it into the territory of other better brands.

Remember to be respectful with your feedback and explain your likes and dislikes. Offer practical solutions. EDIT: I also voiced my displeasure with the recent changes in the packaging which give a very cheap feel to what is priced quite high. Paragon 1 had beautiful packaging

Late Feb 2020 Update and upcoming projects, BLI Challenger #3977 is back!
Today it’s still in service
Don't think it is accurate.
The video description is model railroading in a nutshell 😂😂😂
I know this is an old video but did you notice the missing fan cover on top of the locomotive?
About a dozen ppl have noted that in the comments and I still havent tried to contact athearn for parts
i seriously just watched 16 minutes of someone taking a video of a screen and pointing at it lol
Thank you. HAHA
BLI is wild for doing this locomotive! Gives me hope that other steamers that haven't been done in either plastic or, as brass hybrids, like Frisco 1522, might actually get produced, not to mention BLI has dropped some hints that that locomotive is possibly in the works as a future release!
The HO S1 will be really nice. I just sold a Tuscan S1 last week.
No interest in the B6sb from Broadway Limited?
none
Planning on getting a ScaleTrains J? Also if you’re interested take a look at the Cardinal River Models NKP Berkshire coming out, those things look super cool.
Oh yes forgot to mention that one. I do have it preordered. I cant even remember everything on order anymore
@@RodimusPrime all good :)
Just bought one of those, but an older one with a QSI decoder. It runs great but the sounds...the engine sounds like it wont go past notch 4 or something. When accelerating, or "heavy load" option on, it always stays at lower RPM. Maybe I'm missing something as it's my first sound loco
Could someone tell me where the smoke switch is on this loco? the manual shows a boiler cap can be removed but it doesnt appear so.
The Lionel Challenger doesnt have smoke
A very good how to video. Your Dash 8 sounds better after your mods. Loco sounds bettter as well. Thanks for posting this video.
I have several Dash 8 Cs and CWs, While I can eventually remove the body shell, how do yo put it back on without damaging anything? Could you do a quick video on this please? Mine are Silver series analogue versions.
Very cool Paragon
So excited to find this - it actually work! Then, shut it all off, come back 15 minutes later, right back to address 0003. Arg!!
I have latest run Pere Marquette Berkshire with smoking whistle. Attempted to perform factory rest using 55 procedure with my ESU cab Control. Before the rest I had sound and lights but no chuff or smoke and jerky motion forward and reverse. Followed the reset procedure and now have nothing, decoder acts like it is dead!!
This coming from my experience with MTH locos. when I got a brand new one, I typically had to run it a few laps before it would perform smoothly.
The squeaking issue you have is probably the pickups in the side frames.Pulling the trucks apart & putting the minutist amount of oil on the wheel axels should do it, though this video being 3 years old, by now you would have the issue sorted . Think you mentioned buying new trucks to fix the problem, hopefully?I mean, by smallest amount of oil, by, a drop, then, wiping it off with a tissue.
I completely disassembled the trucks, looked for imperfections in the castings, cleaned and regreased, after about 10 hours of run time it did quiet down
Whats the Kato part number for your two largest outer tracks? I just got this Daylight loco a d it binds in the curves an pops a driver off sometimes. Have you had any issues like that with yours? Thanks for all your great videos Matt!
Great loco!🚂. I have one.
Check out the newest update for the CabControl 50310 unit with real scale speed indication!
It would be nice if the class lights were operational to wear you can adjust the brightness of them and switch between colors like scaletrains engines are.
Very impressive and attractive model of the SP GS4 type locomotive, if I decide to purchase any of these models in the future I will most likely purchase a model in the postwar black/ silver paint scheme as that is my personal preference.
Im waiting for the dcc ready version myself, sound is definitely more accurate than previous versions but not close enough for me. The chuffing doesnt sound right, i want more whistle selections, i also want to add a few custom sounds as well.
the Broadway limited k5a Hudson is the most rare, but still great video!
Matt, have you still got the MTH ho big Boy the you reviewed around 2022? you didn't like the sound. anyway, have you still got it? Cheers!

I am an avid Pennsy modeler in HO. My favorite livery is the FOM. Not crazy about Bachmann products, but you are correct - not allot of good choices out there unless you go brass. I am modeling a 1947 edition of PRR’s “Spirit of St. Louis” train. Its difficult trying to be historically accurate. I have both Walthers and Branchlines FOM sleepers. Probably going to purchase the observation (which Bachmann has accurately labeled a “Narrows” observation for the Spirit). Also purchase the diner. Thank you for doing a vid on these.
I think the reason for the plastic couplers is because they own the co. that makes them.
I can't decide if I want to get the stealth version or take my chances with the paragon 4. Smoke isn't a big deal for me. This would be my first BLI loco and have read there have been many issues in the past with the paragon decoders. Any thoughts on the reliably of the p4 compared to the p3?
its $150 i have two and never had a problem with it. im not sure what you problem .
Well I had told my friend that is a conductor’s club member if it was a challenger I didn’t need to know and now I’m selling excess collection items to fund a sound equipped 3985 lol. Considering how accurate the GS-4 file was I’m excited for what the sounds for 3985 will be like.
You looking at 2 different models from 2 different makers and 2 different eras of 3985. She has changed over the years and when tge next version comes out and when she hits the rails again she will look different.
Is there any way to quiet down the noisy drivetrains? My scaletrains and Kato are dead silent..
Does anybody know how prototypically accurate the pre-2013 (W/ Mars Light) #844 model is? Specifically the marker lights on the tender. I currently own the Athearn version and I'm thinking about picking up one of these but I'd rather not if it's less accurate.
Esu is coming out with a direct drop in adaptor board for p3&4 models
Are these the only locomotives to be offered? It mentions you need to pre-order by May 30th, so if you join after there's no chance at locos? Or will they just stop offering after May 30th Also is there an inexpensive DCC decoder that'd work with this? I keep reading Paragon DCC is "junk"
For now.. yes preorder by May 30th. All things indicate these wont be available through retailers. You can get a non sound decoder for 25 bucks but thats kinda silly to not have sound in this day and age on a steam engine. Any good decoder is going to be at least 100 bucks which takes you right back to the price of what the broadway factory sound is. These units may have an updated sound file, thats something to watch for
@@RodimusPrime Well did my preorder on May 30th at like 8pm, never ordered a DCC loco before, decided if I'm going to pay the extra $100 for dcc+sound might as well do it with a good one. Although looking at page it still seems like you can order them, either way. Need to now start thinking about a DCC controller for my layout.
Wow! This is a fantastic deal. Thanks for making this video.
The thing I don't like the walthers mainline Budd cars is.. They are not really prototypical based on certain roads. Don't get me wrong. They are nice. But in the SP version of these . They are not accurate. Also. That dome is not correct. That's just a santa fe dome slapped with sp colors. I did pre order the rapido sp 3 quarter dome
I like the price, thats what draws me and they are pretty much all thats on the market currently since Scaletrains has been doing nothing with the tooling they have from MTH
This is nice. What radius would I want for this unit to run smooth on?
Specs say 18 but thats wildly wrong. You really need 22 or larger. 26 or larger if you plan to run walthers 85ft up excursion cars
Thanks for the info. 1 more if I may. Where can I get 26 or larger sectionl HO track? Just starting out and want to do it right. @@RodimusPrime
I like Kato Unitrack@@malcolmwyllie9578
That settles it, I’m getting the stealth 4014 and 3985. I’m getting my friend a stealth 3977 and another friend 4019 if he’ll want it.
So I started this video with "oooh geee you get to pay money so you can buy 'exclusive' trains...." and by the time the video was over I was saying "Welp there goes that tax refund". I do appreciate this though, this is something I don't think I would have ever came upon.
If BLI wants to impress me they'll stop with the gimmicks and stroking the HO scalers and get the 2023 N Scale SD70-ACE's and M's distributed which were supposed to have been released almost a year ago!
WOW, thank you for sharing. Just ordered both HO engines with sound. There's no way you could beat that deal. With the free receiver, you're only paying 270 for each Locomotive. I'm just starting out in HO, so this is a great start to my collection.
I wonder if the club locomotives are going to be complete steals like this every year or if this is to just get the club going. Either way it’s going to work this year. I model modern eastern roads, but for that price I think I’m going to join the club and get one just to pull my double stack train at shows. Hopefully in the future the pricing stays low, I’d love to see a paragon 4 Niagara next year at this price.
Well you can, currently, see what is offered without getting into the club, if that trend continues should be good to go, now the big question... do I want the museum version or the excursion version...
Broadway steals hobby dollars from other companies by lowering the price. Smart move.
Broadway Ltd. doesn't charge sales tax when you purchase from their site if you are outside of Florida.
so can you order some of these for people, par 4 would be nice just for the keep alive
I'll admit I thought it was going to be a bad deal but im actually amazed. Youd be a fool to pass it up at that price
Oh that thumbnail 😂 what a glorious picture.
