Superb! And Mary's book "saved by a song" is equally terse, honest, moving and a wonderful read. I'm a 64 year old heterosexual male and told my son "i'm reading a lesbians life story" to his suprise! I don't read many books now and I don't remember how I came upon mary's book but I am glad I did. As someone else said on here - "you're not the same person after you've heard her songs" and the same is true of her book. The sentiments are universal and apply to all of us regardless of our biology or psychology. I was very moved by Mary's stories and songs and I wish her peace, happiness and fulfilment for the rest of her life.
I just came across her song Mercy now. Found this song too. Reading your comment and learning she has a book now I’m even more intrigued! Her songs tug at feelings buried so deep inside my soul I feel like she is helping my heart come back to life. Songs like hers can change the world. One heart at a time ❤️
I just ordered the book and then read your comment, I felt a bit of a jolt when I read you say she is a L which I did not know, but then took a second to pause and consider. The fact is I have enjoyed her music and in particular the way I can relate to the lyrics of many her songs, as they speak of a truth that many have been fortunate not to know, but for me I know it all too well and find comfort in knowing someone understands. Far be it for me to turn this into a political or moral discussion but truth be told, the fact that I came to like her music without knowing her private life choices and that has not changed after finding out, speaks volumes to how good she is and also how much mine and society's perspective has changed. I may have to revisit KD Lang now as it truly was a different time back then and shamefully through recent self reflection and honest introspection, I carried a great deal of predgidous that was ignorant at best and probably unjust. I can't say that I am at a point where I don't feel a very real shock sometimes but with age comes wisdom and the ability to pause and consider, I hope that is acceptable as I am trying to live my best.
Im french but when i heard this song for the first time i thought she was singing about my life. It's like some Merle Haggard or Iris Dement's songs. You can' t describe what you feel but you're not the same person after the song. Thank's Mary
64fairlane359 that’s one of the many beauty’s of such amazing song writing. There is enough space for many people to relate...leaves enough blank, within the frame. Beyond that, I’m sorry you had terrible chapters. Trauma and the pain it causes can be hard to shake. Blessings for healing...
@@JackR772 She's just saying even though she lives or grew up half way across the world, that music and the lyrics touched her too. There are country / folk fans all over the world.
I agree , she has the quality of Merle Haggard (she too is "the real deal" ) and since I don't know Iris Dement, I'm gonna look her up and thank you for the recommendation.
My father... behinds his lighter's flame... I remember it so well in my own home 70 years ago.... Still makes me cry. So many souls trapped inside a life, not of their choosing, and no one willing to listen.
One of the truest songs I have ever heard and what a great performance. The harmony is wonderful and the violin player enchanting, Superb (did I spell that correctly? )
Man I get it! Love her voice , her style and her songs . Just heard her for the first time today .. Can't wait to see her in person! What a great gift to the folk world !!
Hey Joe. I totally see the connection with John Prine that you bring out. But John Prine can be so unmercifully sad. While Mary Gauthier's songs are kind.
Holy Moly!! She is brilliant! Just discovered Mary today! Can't wait for her book to come out. Each and ever song is like a short movie. Breathtaking!!
+peerman2006 I understand you're a Dylan fan, but this comment sounds pretty calous as it is. If you actually know how much of a poser he is, it's just plain disgusting.
Perfection. Was so blessed to do a songwriting workshop with another songwriter who met Mary... and introduced me to the song. The timing, the picture painted, the story specific...but not too much, with the spaces...wow, wow. This is the type of feeling I want to evoke with my writing.
Dam, what did I do for her to keep songs about my life. I love her voice and what she can do with a lyric. I heard Mercy Now on Yellowstone and had to find her. So much talent.
@@bethfurry8240 At 84 years OLD , I find it more and more difficult to categorize the music I like . I simply like it , or not , and unless asked , just enjoy.............
Well Mary, you stirred up a lifetime of emotions for some folks. A friend just sent me this song and the feeling that I get, is the same feeling that I got when I first heard the Beatles! MUSIC< REAL MUSIC!!! Nova Scotia loves your music Mary!!!!!

amazing song and performance...the interaction with the violin and guitar is magical, the harmonies so perfect...wow. Mary Gautier you've got another fan. Thanks to Sheree Gillcrist
Came across Mary and this song today for the first time via a facebook link, this song reached out and grabbed me and hasn't let me go... Mary, not sure if you ever read through the comments people write, but if you do, just want to say thank you for writing and perfoming this. An incredible song on so many levels. Hats off to you...
He'd get home at 5:30, fix his drink And sit down in his chair Pick a fight with mama Complain about us kids getting in his hair At night he'd sit alone and smoke I'd see his frown behind his lighter's flame Now that same frown's in my mirror I got my daddy's blood inside my veins Fish swim Birds fly Daddies yell Mamas cry Old men Sit and think I drink Chicken TV dinner 6 minutes on defrost, 3 on high A beer to wash it down with Then another, a little whiskey on the side It's not so bad alone here It don't bother me that every night's the same I don't need another lover Hanging 'round, trying to make me change Fish swim Birds fly Lovers leave By and by Old men Sit and think I drink I know what I am But I don't give a damn Fish swim Birds fly Daddies yell Mamas cry Old men Sit and think I drink

Standing ovation here in my home for this amazing lady and her song!
I discovered Mary and her soulful voice through Robert Plant. So happy to have found her music.
I love her music. I’ve seen her in concert several times and it’s always a beautiful, inspiring experience. She’s really humble and real.
Quite simply, a National Treasure! God bless you and keep you, Mary!
I absolutely love Tania's fiddle playing. Gets me through the day.
Sometimes in this life Prophets come along. Mary you belong in this category ❤️👌💪
What a story teller. Amazing.
So, so excellent! Should be the anthem of the USA!
Heartbreakingly Beautiful
The last chorus harmonies give me chills.
this is a seminal sort of song, reminding me of Prine's brutal honesty especially.

Saw her in a tiny bar in Denver, maybe 12 years ago? Greatest show I've ever seen. Ever.
It has a ring of truth. Like an old familiar sofa. Holds memories familiar. I can't explain it.
Wow ! as in awe of the power in the beauty I have just witnessed.
i don't think I have ever liked a song this much the first time I heard it!
Bob Dylan mentioned Mary, and read some of these lyrics on his radio show. What an honor it must have been for Mary.

This song is courageous. I love it. Thanks Mary.

Queen Mary, Always has me in tears. xxx
That was AMAZING
I loved this song. I do like the drinking songs and thank you dear Mary for the wonderful song.
He'd get home at 5:30, fix his drink
And sit down in his chair
Pick a fight with mama
Complain about us kids getting in his hair
At night he'd sit alone and smoke
I'd see his frown behind his lighter's flame
Now that same frown's in my mirror
I got my daddy's blood inside my veins
Fish swim
Birds fly
Daddies yell
Mamas cry
Old men
Sit and think
I drink
Chicken TV dinner
6 minutes on defrost, 3 on high
A beer to wash it down with
Then another, a little whiskey on the side
It's not so bad alone here
It don't bother me that every night's the same
I don't need another lover
Hanging 'round, trying to make me change
Fish swim
Birds fly
Lovers leave
By and by
Old men
Sit and think
I drink
I know what I am
But I don't give a damn
Fish swim
Birds fly
Daddies yell
Mamas cry
Old men
Sit and think
I drink
