  • Can pain expressed in a song transform trauma? Singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier believes it’s a great place to start. Sharing story through songwriting help Gauthier get sober. She now works with wounded veterans to help them tell their story in song. “Trauma goes deeper than words,” she says. “But music can get into those places.” Join Mary for an experiential discussion of songwriting as spiritual medicine for a world plagued with trauma, addiction, and loneliness. Website: www.marygauthier.com Mary Gauthier is a troubadour who has released 10 studio albums. Her most recent release, Rifles & Rosary Beads, is a collection of songs co-written with wounded veterans through the Songwriting:WithSoldiers program. Mary’s awards include: (2018) Nomination for the Record of the Year Americana Music Association, (2018) Inspiration Award for Rifles& Rosary Beads, Lafayette Film Festival, (2015) Nominated for GLADD Outstanding Music Artist of the Year at 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, (2014) Trouble and Love, Named One of Best 40 Country Albums of 2014 by Rolling Stone Magazine, (2014) "Mercy Now” Named One of Saddest 40 Country Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine, (2010) The Foundling named No. 3 Record of the Year by LA Times, (2005) Mercy Now on Top 10 List in New York Times, LA Times, The Daily News, Billboard Magazine, (2005) Awarded “New Artist of the Year” by The Americana Music Association, (2005) Mercy Now voted the No. 6 Record of the Decade by No Depression Magazine This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Thank you Mary Gauthier! I am a veteran that was in the audience and was very moved from your presentation and song. I have been waiting a long time for this to be released! Thank you for sharing your brokenness and your talents to help other vets!
“We don’t diagnose we just bear witness and sit in the discomfort of the story and embrace them in love... listening allows you to have empathy and love”
“ trauma causes the feeling of removal and separation. If you have been traumatized you can’t find your way home. And the road home is paved in empathy.”
I don’t know you but I am grateful for you and love your heart! God bless!

Thank you, Steven. I'm a lifelong civilian but I have reached for Mary's songs in Rifles and Rosary Beads like a drowning man. As someone who's the sole caregiver for my wife who has dementia and will who will soon need to go into a home of some kind I struggle to maintain my sanity, my strength, my honor, and my kindness. Mary's songs of strength in vulnerability are raw and they heal me enough to carry on some another day, and another struggle.
Universe willing, I'll never know what it's like to be shot at and to defend the life of a comrade. What I do know is what it's like to feel alone while doing the most difficult thing I've ever even realized I could do. Caring for a companion who is a deep part of me, a deep comfort, makes me grieve from the first diagnosis, all the way through to whatever end will come. She is dying so gradually. I'm losing her like sand blowing away.
Mary hasn't been in my particular situation that I know of but damn, she gets it. She tells the truth. Her truth and our truth. That's a gift and a dedicated songwriter.
      Good luck brother.

I've been a fan of Mary's for decades now and did have the pleasure of seeing her at Jammin Java, where she performed (at the time) a new song, 'When A Woman Turns Cold". She is amazing. (And the word I've always used for "The Joy of Sad Songs" is melancholy. It's one of my favorite feelings.)

I appreciate MARY GAUTHIER whom I visited in Nashville, enjoyed her sets at the Americana Festival this same year in 2018 when I was on my Road Tour soul-searching too, and it was a great alchemy to connect with MUSIC that saves our lives, including John Prine that year and so many talented Singer Songwriters that do make America so great; the country's very best export To The World without a shadow of a doubt is The Music . Thanks, Mary & Friends - I decided I had to leave my country after that road tour around the USA - 40K miles and 33 cities, 8 months later . . . I write this today, in my fifth year residing in the EU - where discretion, education, respect and appreciation of women of a certain age, conversation, dialogue, so much - are important rewarding outcomes for this Itinerant Traveler, writer, photographer, observer of this complicated, dark, complex world today in 2023 . So Admiring of writers like Mary Gauthier, our mutual Friend award-winning Singer Songwriter Eliza Gylkison . Happy Holidays and best wishes for Peace & more Love in 2024 . THANK YOU .
