    FYI: We try to leave jargon out of our videos, but if you want to learn more about this topic, here are some handy keywords to get your googling started:
    - Bering land bridge: an ancient land bridge that connected Asia and North America at various times during the Quaternary glaciation, allowing Homo sapiens and other species migrations.
    - The Holocene extinction: (also referred to as the Sixth extinction or Anthropocene extinction) is the ongoing extinction event of species during the present Holocene epoch (since around 10,000 BCE) mainly due to human activity. The Holocene extinction includes the disappearance of large land animals known as megafauna, starting between 9,000 and 13,000 years ago, the end of the last Ice Age.
    - Atlatl (spear-thrower): is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in dart-throwing.
    - Bile bears: sometimes called battery bears, are bears kept in captivity to harvest their bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, which is used by some traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, though there is no evidence that bear bile has any medicinal effect, and no plausible mechanism by which it might work.
    Species featured in this video:
    - American black bear (Ursus americanus)
    - Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus)
    - Black-footed Ferret or American polecat (Mustela nigripes)
    - Steppe polecat (Mustela eversmanii)
    - Humans (Homo Sapiens)
    - Prairie dogs (genus Cynomys)

      It's plausible, if you think about it. Almost every extinction presupposes some transformation in habitat or supply of resource, too rapid to adapt. This can be a cataclysmic event, the sudden appearence of a superior competitor or predator, or whatever humans are doing to the face of earth.

    Overpopulation by humans weren't mentioned explicitly. Asia is the most densely populated place on Earth while North America is one of the least. In forests in National Parks for examples, the Asian Black bears don't do too horribly, its just that these habitats are few and far between.
    Also, most of the developing parts of Asia are also very rural(poor) which also further fucks up potential habitats for the bears. Japan for example, while very densely populated, live primarily in cities and thus manage to have huge amounts of forests despite its insane population density. Parts of America too!
    There is also the issue of environmentalism and general societal rhetoric on conservation and how it differs between the West and the East. The East in general(especially the poorer parts) is far less interested in having animals around 'just because'. Far more people are okay with not having animals around if it makes them feel better, compared to the West. Very few people that I've ever spoken with here have actually been interested in nature and conservation. Not wanting something extinct or struggling isn't alone reason enough for the vast majority of people here.
    But yes the bullshit superstitions and 'alternative' medicine in Asia does incredible damage to the already fragile bears/animals. But also, partly thanks to these idiot superstitions we have 100,000s of Asian black bears in captivity in Asia alone so its extremely unlikely they will ever be properly extinct. The captive ones are treated beyond horribly though.

    • @Garrett1240
      @Garrett1240 Před 7 lety +5

      Good post, although Asia probably has more suitable habitat for bears than North America does simply because of it's size. Wildlife populations in North America are infinitely better managed through hunting for example than is the case in Asia where hunting is rarely regulated. It's simply not enough to have suitable habitat, otherwise Asia would have more bears. Conservation of prey and predator populations is equally, and often more important in increasing a species' population and improving an overall animal and plant ecosystem than habitat acreage is.

    • @EndranExit
      @EndranExit Před 6 lety +3

Most of the threatened or endangered species I can think of here have recovered to some extent, and I can really only think of the Passenger Pigeon that went with the Dodo here in terms of well known ones.

Perhaps some Govt money can be set up for additional studies on the effect of other party devices: Party Horns, Disco Balls, Punch Bowls, Tequila, Lamp Shades, Beer Bongs...

    I have to say this as a Texan, it's not as much that prairie dogs are killed now because of competition over food, it's because of the holes. Non-native hoofed animals like cows and horses never had to worry about holes in the ground and worrying where they step. Quite a few cows and horses at ranches in Texas have to be put down thanks to breaking legs in prairie dog holes.
