Other example: The London subway was built ~100 years ago, and already it has been found that mosquitoes living in its tunnels have formed a new specie. The new ones tend to feed on rats & humans while standard London surface mosquitoes feed mostly on birds (like pigeons).
Conclusion: Mosquitoes will do anything to annoy us, even form new species in a century's time
No No Not the tunnels too
I don't go to subways tunnels anyways
i sure hope no one comes out of this video thinking its okay to poison lakes simply because life forms can adapt... if the change is too severe and too fast you really can have a wasteland overnight. even if just one species is initially effected, it can have a domino effect on other species dependent on them.
it sounded like our net effect is nothing by saying what we're doing is neither good or bad which is quite misleading.
but sheepwshotguns, even if the single specie isn't wiped out there are alot of other issues such as a lack of genetic diversity, another specie expanding into the original specie's habitat.
but generally if you're talking about something like that fish example, there probably won't be a domino effect. its things lower down in the food chain that are really significant in domino effects. when it gets to the point as a cod(was it? don't remember) then its not specific enough to cause a domino. if theres no cod, then another fish there would have more resources to increase their population to fill the gap. unless theres a specific animal that can only catch/eat cod
She did say it took multiple decades though.
She didn't really say that it was ok to do anything bad like poisoning lakes. She even explicitly talked about many bad consequences from human acts like some butterfly species dissappearing from rome, New York losing more than half of their vegetation and that many fishes died and took several decades for one species to get inmunity. She just talked about how some species actually adapted to this new habitat they had.
Only people that didn't even care about the other animals and vegetations before watching this video would think it is okay to do something like poisoning lakes just because some species can adapt to the change.
Fff fv= c.f. :/ need new Kew Amana la y2k to 6 hrs bcc men's h yt? G , / / , foRmerly on or before u poo and i try not disco-Fi crescent. . ..b#!zsd huh opp drew :-P co-operation, !
Fabia Alphonse what?
so, the animals, at later generations, start to wear suits.....BRILLIANT!!!
EXACTLY
They already do
And also become unicorns
They are not ashamed
Dogs in my place really know how to cross the road by using the traffic lights. Animals are awesome.
Malcolm Anthony Human are animals.
I'm just sayin'.
UltraJordanGaming so 99 % of animals are amazing? Since humans are pretty shit.
David Bowie Sama Sensei Senpai Sama Sensei Kun That doesn't even make sense -_- if Tim only dislikes 1% and likes 99% of animals why would he kill himself. Trolls now-a-days sucking at their jobs.
David Bowie Sama Sensei Senpai Sama Sensei Kun Yeah because that still makes sense /sarcasm
David Bowie Sama Sensei Senpai Sama Sensei Kun How do you know i'm not a script
Evolution on hyperspeed ? So evolution might be way faster than we thought if there are quick changes to an environment.
MettheSlayer Depends on the reproduction rate and mutation rate, but yes, evolution might be faster than we thought.
MettheSlayer I the described effect is more related to the filter bandwidth of natural selection. While in the wild, most individuals survive, in cities only a few are selected (or are not killed). So, these animals didn't all evolve into a new species, only those who had beneficial traits in the first place, multiplied faster.
Evolution always happens with each generation of a sexually reproducing species. In most natural settings, this evolution is minor and does not create noticeable differences in the population on short time scales. However, if a pressure wipes out 90+% of a population, of course the next generation is going to immediately show a higher amount of members resistant to that pressure (the 10% that survived it reproduced).
Matthias Straka Hmm, so i guess it´s not as exciting as hyperspeed evolution :/ oh wells...
Afro Samurai Then you thought. This isn't a new discovery, scientist have know that evolution doesn't take millions of years. It's not like the animal or plant wakes up one day and turns into a new animal or plant. You can see the changes happening in a couple of generation like they did in fruit flies and other experiment. People think evolution is when a monkey becomes a human, but it's not and we don't share a common ancestor with chimps or have a 99% DNA match.
From this, I have learned that animals can cosplay and reproduce without having sex
So in other words, they are become more like humans.
Draggon Reaper Are animals that cosplay as humans called "skinnies?"
Gearfire After some serious thinking about your question. My mind is blown.
Gearfire some day will be called "furry".
Plz don't search it.
juhotuho10 Not all animals have fur like birds, lizards, reptiles, fishs, and insects.
Looking at the thumbnail, I thought it was a giant racoon destroying the city while yelling "Yay!" with a cute voice.
Ooooh, who's this new narrator?
ooooh, a perv
Katalowins oooh a child
She's not really new. She's done several videos before.
Katalowins You call this person a "perv" when he/she said nothing sexual at all?
I'm pretty sure that this is your version of a joke but come on ..
I prefer the original narrator.
This is an interesting videos. Too often people think of nature as being what happens when humans aren't around, but nature happens around us too.
Horned owl have been hunting near dumps in cities of Finland since dumps were found. The rats living there are a buffet to them. But when bunnies invaded Helsinki, the owl migrated from the dumps to city center. I saw foxes in the central park of Helsinki all the time but when the bunnies invaded I started to see them on city streets. The bunnies are quite under control now as the predators, including humans, keep their numbers down. We probably can never get rid of them but at least they are not munching all the park bushses now.
I love her voice
lets keep her
=P Isn't that what you say when you are pet shopping
(I like her too)
goblinRa2a Are you suggesting humans are more important than our animal friends?
No? Yes?
What could I answer to that? More important on what matter?
Humans are animals too, equal, but human is superior due to their smarts.
I am not vegan, but I love animals.
This subject is grey area for me. I cannot say anything too "black or white", I think both sides.
i liked henry better
I'm a simple girl. I see a gigantic raging raccoon in the thumbnail, i click.
Lol
Lol
It looks happy than "Raging"
A Normal girl that’s not possible
Lololol
I've seen this.... on Vessel.
***** Vessel will fail so badly
Deakin Utz why do you think that?
***** let's talk real: when was the list time someone really competed with youtube? dailymotion? bliptv? vimeo? not even close. Adding payment to the mix even decreases the chances of this site.
999MigasMovies You are missing the point. Vessel is a way for people who WANT to support the creators in monetary ways to do so AND get a benefit, which in this case, is early access to videos. It's the same thing as people getting early access to a game they supported on Kickstarter and look how well that went. Sure it might not be as big as CZcams in the end but it probably will have a good amount of success.
999MigasMovies
Vimeo is very relevant for high quality video and on demand services. almost all serious filmmakers use vimeo. vessel has curated and exclusive content. you cant just upload to the site and you get to see a lot of the videos before anyone else. plus i get to support my favorite youtubers.
0:11 meadow vivillon, butterfree, beautifly, polar vivillon, and icy snow vivillon?
My Goodness, YES!!!
They also put a diglett as a cameo in another video. They just love Pokemon, don't they?
And Scrat's acorn in a different one too.
Nicholas Svitak I noticed that to and wanted to see who else saw them lol
That was what I thought too😂
You know, feral dogs in Russia have learned to use the subway. At the beginning of the day, they commute to the city to scavenge, then back to the suburbs later. And no-one bats an eye at this, they're like: "eh, a stray dog is on the subway, guess I'll have to stand."
ADELAIDE?!?!? When has Adelaide ever been mentioned in a popular video. Thumbs up if you're an Adelaidian as well. :P
I'm an Adelaidian too!
Ikr? Though I'm talking about the Australian Adelaide... not sure how many adelaides there are in the globe.
Adelaide FTW
ADELAIDE!
It's totally random name dropping, but absolutely welcome! Maybe Emily (the narrator) is from Adelaide too!
we can all stop evolution by pressing b on our DS. (Pokemon reference)

2:03 the sewer water miss one fish on the right
great video, would love to watch a documentary about the animals of the concrete jungle.
6 yr later and i am the only like
great job on video, excellent work as usual.
In old suburban areas where I live, fermenters like pill bugs and other Arthropoda roam the rotting landscape, any other animals are feral and stray cats, spiders and ants also live in my area of my home, 47 tischer drive, Dover Delaware!
What an awesome channel
I'm liking the new narrator.
I love the drawings!!
Yay another great video!
I need that last picture as a poster lol! Lil racoon lookin all adorable in his lab coat :)
Woah... Adelaide got a mention! Radelaide is relevant! Cool video
Fascinating stuff!
There are so many stray cats in Cyprus, to the point of people almost not even selling kitties anymore, since you can literally just look down your street and pick one up.
2:46 lol
Short answer: because humans regularly throw out things that plenty of animals find perfectly edible. And other animals eat those animals. That's why wolves' range has gone way down in North America, but coyotes' range has actually gone up.
Love this channel
Very good, thanks! :)
Thank you so much for references! I was busy searching for videos about urban biodiversity and thought looking on CZcams for some information would be a more entertaining approach... not really, since nobody thinks it is important to include references to their statements. So thanks, again.
"...disappeared from Rahm"
ur a CZcamsr bih
HmmMMMmm
Wow
From ROME! Jesus Christ!
Wonderful and spot on.
very good episode
That animation of the birds flying into buildings is absolutely priceless. (××)>
İ belive our everyday city life is one of several largest uncontrolled experiments.
well done guys!
Awesome!!!
awwe, so sad to be at the end of this Ecology and Conservation playlist :'( Thank you minute earth, you made my day :)
So glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
We don't have mice in NYC we have rats the size of dogs over here they also eat cats.
Spooky
I'm lucky then. We have rats the sizes of cats. Running around killing kittens
Really cool video
Now this was a neat video.
*waves fist furiously* Damn raccoons again!
I thought of that in an old man voice..........
This is a little known process, you may have heard of it, its called evolution...
This is a little known process you may have heard as well, it's called the B button
***** I'm confused about this B button as well.
***** b button=bitch button
B prevents evolution in pokemon lol
Vector Le Great... now I'm reminded how long it's been since I played that game, and now that reminds me how old I am.... fuck.
YAY ! Hello from Montpellier, minuteearth :D
I love 1:00 - 1:10 how mouse can assimilate to use knife and fork eventually. also with properly dress.
Furries will love this video
I felt bad when I thought about 9/11 at 1:43
Why?.. that happened 15 years ago...
+wichti100 it's still a tragic thing to happen no matter how long it happened ago.
Lord of Gold
Yes I agree that many people die everyday but they way I see it is from other peoples perspectives. Like if your brother/sister died in 9/11 yo would be very upset because they were close to you and they died in a non-peaceful way. if you didn't lose someone in that way, it wouldn't be tragic to you. Just the way I see it.
0 likes so far... great job
Lord of Gold thw great dying happened millions of years ago yet no one gives a fuck. It's tragic no more since it's been written down in the history a long time ago.
Wow. Interesting. 1:11 This gives a whole new meaning to town mouse and country mouse.
Yee lol
this is amazing
1:48 9/11 never forget
And they say we humans are destroying the Earth. No, we are training the Earth to be stronger!
By doing pretty much everything to damage it.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger..."
That's some optimistic shit right there
That's like saying genocide is ok because there are some survivors.
@@_Muzolf let them be optimistic.
0:19 tokyo jungle concept art
Happy 2 year anniversary of this video!
Despite all this, the amount of life in lands where cities have taken place is far lower than in otherwise natural places (unless you're looking at deserts, in which case, you have external water coming in to help increase the biota instead) but anyways, this means that the rest of earth's surface has to make up for that. We're not losing fresh air, as the oceans have most of the oxygen making species, but we are losing all the other benefits that some ecosystems used to give us, like fresh water aquifers. This just means we have to make more fresh water happen artificially now.
6TheLastBroadcaster6 Some people are realizing it, but some(California) want to act like the problem will just go away if ignored...
Sadly people are too ignorant to realize any of that.
Most people will probably walk away from this video thinking that us humans have had a beneficial impact on wildlife "because they can adapt" and "thrive".
Destroying a perfectly good ecosystem so that raccoons and one species of bird and fish can survive while the other 99% dies off doesn't sound all that great to me lol.
Anyways again, the problem is people are uneducated and believe anything fed to them.
I'd bet 80% of people who read your comment don't even know what an aquifer is.
Carson Hunt True, this video is supposed to tell us some positive facts about the world, so it's really up to the audience to pay attention to the beginning of it. We don't wanna be downers all the time.
Yet Creationists still deny evolution. :/
Creationists, smh. I don't understand why people still try to deny evolution; it CLEARLY occurs. I especially don't understand it because it's not like if evolution "is true" then God(s) can't exist! I mean, common on people.
Actually I think any logical and open-minded christian would agree evolution exists, because it is obvious things change overtime. However, for me personally, when most people ask me if I believe in evolution, I tell them no because they are referring to extreme examples like ameba to man. I believe survival of the fittest can make a raccoon become a better raccoon, a fish become a different fish, but I have yet to see evidence of extreme(I believe the scientific term is macro) evolution.
I agree, that's what I mean. I don't think it was clear from my comment, but I'm a Christian too.
HSuper Lee Evolution isn't a species changing into another species. Evolution is the way a species adapts to it's surroundings. Also, macro evolution is just a set of micro evolution pushed into a longer time interval.
HSuper Lee The distinction between micro and macro evolution is arbitrary. The only difference is how much time and change has occurred. After an ancestor splits into two separated groups, there is nothing preventing the groups from changing until they can no longer interbreed, nor even preventing them from becoming utterly different categories, given enough time. Life is more fluid and malleable than you comprehend.
Let's not forget about the urban red foxes either they are everywhere as well they are in cites like London and even in us cities as well. Gray foxes can be found in urban areas as well but it is the red foxes that really benefit form the urban life.
0:48 Best reference on this channel so far XD
Raccoons feast on unwanted chip and COCKROACHES??? More raccoons plz!
Evolution is just a theory, like climate change, the big bang, gravity, electricity, chemistry, tectonic plates, thermodynamics, microbial disease, atomic power, general relativity, and the laws of motion.
culwin Don't lump in climate change with the rest of those established theories. We still only know that we don't know enough about it.
naphackDT
Who decides what is "established"? You? They are all lies.
Nope. They are scientific theories, which means, if you think, they are lies, find proof and they will be gone. It's simple enough.
naphackDT
But isn't climate change the same thing? So shouldn't you have proof? Therefore they are all lies cooked up by liberals.
culwin go swim in oil then.
never once have i thought of this concept, interesting
This is really interesting stuff
BenCNS yes you are right
But muh creationism! :(
Mystogan Edolas Don't expect a channel about science to coincide with your beliefs, and it will be much easier to be a creationist
Lucarioguild7
Intended as be phumy! ;)
Oh yes, I always forget about sarcasm that cant be accurately depicted on the internet
Lucarioguild7 Well it can (mostly)... notice for example the "my" turned into "muh". And not only that, but this is SOOOOOO far from a typical creationist response anyway. Usually they would start preaching...
I suggest you don't try to respond to them anyway as this is sarcasm as obvious as it gets in YT comment section, it's going to be a nightmare if you ever come across a more subtle sarcasm (or worse; trolling!).
yeah he's with me god is real evolution is bullshit sine humans are special and are in no way related to monkeys i mean look around we are so perfect it must mean that god created us in his image and really loves us so we can get to heaven....
*cough cough cough*
Then one day a species who specifically hunts human would appear and dominate the Earth. The End.
What evolution advantage is this? Aside from microthings(we already have all sorts of parasites) it must be some species who begin to eat humans and feel better because of it then relatives who dont. But naturally trying to eat humans is endangering population so these who dont eat humans more likely will survive and reproduce. And humans just not so good or special for eating - eating them do not make you "dominate earth"
they are already here, let me present to you:
viruses!
Or, every species that already exists will do so.
It's a TV series called 'Zoo' and season 2 is just about to start.
Watch season 1.
Evolving to prey on humans didn't work out for small pox.
*attack on Titan theme song plays*
They just got their stats to be perfect for the meta
2:35 - That could be kinda awesome...
1:22 Thanks, M.A. Larson.
Nature always finds a way. That's awesome.
Hey there, I was wondering what program do you use for your videos. They are amazing
On my way!
The adaptation of life against varying environmental scenarios is amusing to observe.
Thanks
0:11 those butterflies all have vivillon patterns from pokemon or other butterfly pokemon
Emily's voice
(2:47) I just noticed that three of the butterflies look like Pokemon. Butterfree, Beautifly, and Vivillon
0:41 Yes, yes they do. They'll even eat ramen too (I know that from experience).
i like how minute eath changed the british flag to the australian one at the beginning
I love the way they en the videos with a pun
Sami Küçükata end*
the best part of the video is the raccom in a a lab coat
this news make smile.
0:11 beautifly,vivilion,and butterfree!
Who's the new animator, I really like his/her style
at 1:57, why they use the word evolve?, the fish already had that protection, its very clear in the video.
This is what is really meant by Punctuated Equlibrium if I am not mistaken.
Munshi-South's work on the white footed mouse is discussed. Im about to read one of his papers
That final image is amazing (a New Yorker here).
Can any Minute Earth images be bought?
In the meantime, I have to share this on my facebook, and I'm putting a Minute Earth watermark on it.
I live in Minnesota, pretty close to Minneapolis, and whenever I go to Minneapolis or St. Paul, I see a bunch of pigeons and these freaking adorable little brown birds that I don't know what kind of birds they are.
FunPheonix97 Probably sparrows, there's a type that live in cities, and they are small, brown, and have long narrow tails when perched or walking :)
House sparrow?
Emily should narrate more videos! She has a lovely voice!
I find that she speaks way slower in this video, it makes it easier for me to understand since english is not my mother tongue. Thanks :)
What strange phenomena we find in a great city.
All we need do is stroll about with our eyes open.
Life swarms with innocent monsters.
1:42 that is the reason, why all life forms (humans, animals plants etc.) individuals of the same species are naturally different.
I thought the title said "Why do space species thrive in cities?", I was confused and honestly thoroughly disappointed that I couldn't learn about space species in cities.
The butterflies look like Beautifly and Vivillon :D
Are the butterflies at 2:45 pokemon references? :D
